A Choir of Ill Children
A Choir of Ill Children | Tom Piccirilli
4 posts | 6 read | 11 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Tom Piccirilli's The Last Kind Words. This lyrical tale of evil, loss, and redemption is a stunning addition to the Southern gothic tradition of Flannery OConnor and Harry Crews. A Choir of Ill Children is the startling story of Kingdom Come, a decaying, swamp backwater that draws the lost, ill-fated, and damned. Since his mothers disappearance and his fathers suicide, Thomas has cared for his three brothersconjoined triplets with separate bodies but one shared brainand the towns only industry, the Mill. Because of his familys prominence, Thomas is feared and respected by the superstitious swamp folk. Granny witches cast hexes while Thomass childhood sweetheart drifts through his life like a vengeful ghost and his best friend, a reverend suffering from the power of tongues, is overcome with this curse as he tries to warn of impending menace. All Thomas learns is that the carnival is coming. Torn by responsibility and rage, Thomas must face his tormented past as well as the mysterious forces surging toward the town he loves and despises.

Four brothers, 3 of whom are conjoined at the head. The 4th, our narrator, is Thomas: the apathetic son in gentry of a deep southern town of Kingdom Come. With the bayou granny witches, the debauchery of Thomas and the town, and more than one family secret. Truly creative, within the genre of the southern gothic tradition. I enjoyed it. It‘s quick and strangely human. The normal is abnormal. Cast of characters well developed, and coherent plot.

Southern gothic horror, I guess. Not a ton of horror though, more supernatural maybe. It was kind of confusing at times, but I still really liked it. I loved the Bayou setting, very atmospheric. I can't remember why I picked this one up, but it wasn't what I was expecting. In a good way it turns out. Made me think of Geek Love meets True Detective (season one). Would definitely be worth a reread in the future.

🎃 I don‘t really get scared, even when I should. The tagged book wasn‘t scary but it WAS weird.
🎃Scream. It rejuvenated the horror genre!
🎃A man, who was high on meth, came to our house looking for my Dad (prosecuting attorney at the time and who picked a GREAT TIME TO NOT BE HOME!) When we wouldn‘t let him in, he started banging on our glass door and our windows...
🎃 Anyone that wants to play along!!

Imagine a crime novel that is a cross between Southern gothic and Geek Love. This is a strange and fascinating story. In the bayou town of Kingdom Come, Thomas and his conjoined triplet brothers live in the family mansion, crossing paths with conjure women, ghosts, a child murderer, grad student documentary filmmakers, a fallen private investigator, and a lot more.
