Soubhiville I loved Guards! Guards! Carrot is hilarious, I love how literal he is and his naivety when he first arrives! I love how the other guards view him, and Vimes especially. And Errol! Don‘t you just want to squeeze him? But not hard so he doesn‘t explode 🤣. I‘ve seen bunches of illustrations of the guards, but I‘ve yet to see a drawing of Nobby that is strange and inhuman enough for my mind‘s eye. 6y

Soubhiville In rereading Discworld starting last January, I have found that my favorite storyline has shifted from Death more towards the watch books. These characters are just so much fun! 6y

julesG @Soubhiville Some habits of the watch reminded me of the witchfinder sergeant Shadwell of Good Omens - which is our next read. E.g. Nobby's dogends, Vimes and women, Carrot and Newton,... 6y

Soubhiville @julesG oh Good Omens is next?! I haven‘t read that in years! Fun! I‘ll look for those similarities. I‘ve been reading 1-3 Discworld books a month, I‘m on Feet of Clay now, so GG isn‘t fresh in my mind. 6y

khooliha Very grumpy with myself for not having gotten around to Guards, Guards! yet because I (like everyone) love the watch. I want to spend more time with Vimes ASAP! 6y

Moray_Reads I love Vetinari, so cynical, so cunning, so wise. And Vimes definitely had the best character arc over the course of his books 6y

Laura317 This is probably one of my favorite Discworld books. As I‘ve mentioned, I have a bit of a crush on Vimes. I can completely see why Lady Sybil Ramkin falls for him. Their courtship (?) cracks me up. Errol is adorable. All the crazy things he‘d eat! I want a swamp dragon. 6y

Gezemice @Moray_Reads Yes, I think Vimes is somewhat autobiographical, although I cannot be sure. He is the only character that is complex - all characters are fun, but they do tend to be one-sided, except for Vimes. And I love every scene with Vetinari. “one man, one vote” 6y

Laura317 @Gezemice Oh, I like Vetinari. I just can‘t quite puzzle him out. By unnatural, I mean not quite human. Something else. I like his dungeon with his little rat minions. Never build a dungeon you wouldn‘t want to stay in yourself. 😂 6y

Gezemice @gossamerchild I meant that I think Vimes is closest to Pratchett, not Vetinari. Vetinari is a very fun character but not exactly a complex character. 6y

khooliha And I have caught up! I love most of this book (I more... tolerate Nobby and Colon), but even with loving it I had somehow forgot that a dragon gets arrested! I had forgotten Vetinari's speech at the end too, and I'm looking forward to seeing if that attitude bears out (in my memory of him it does not). 6y

khooliha I like how the book draws parallels between Vimes and Carrot in their small moments of kindness. They almost couldn't be more different people, but tiny things let you know that they have that same animating force of good. But anyway, please let Carrot be a real adult man in the next book, my brain cannot handle him being 16. 6y

khooliha @julesG Thank you! I've carried most of these books around in my head since I was a teen and I'm very happy for this reread giving me the space to think about them more than I did before. 6y

julesG @khooliha It's the same with me. I read Pratchett ages ago and I see different things in the books now than I did in my teens. 6y

Gezemice @khooliha I just finished re-reading, and it is funny that the only part of the story I remembered that a dragon gets arrested... I did remember the characters though and the swamp dragons, but not Errol. And Carrot never acts like he is 16 anyway, lol. 6y

Gezemice @julesG Same here, I read it some years ago, although for some reason I ended up reading it after I read the rest of the Watch books. And apparently I did not like it somuch, according to my Goodreads review. All I can think that something wrong was with my head, because I loved it this time. 6y

khooliha @Gezemice I'm glad PTerry didn't write Carrot the same way he'd written teens up to Guards, Guards. Carrot's just a weird old young man, I guess! 6y
