Started out slow, ended with a bang. Hated most of the characters, but they made great antagonists.

Catching up with reviews. I'd finished this a couple of weeks ago with #ClassicLSFBC and enjoyed it very much. It's a well-paced and thought-provoking read with themes typical of sci-fi from the Cold War era.

The Wall | Marlen Haushofer

A woman in the Austrian Alps is suddenly surrounded by an invisible wall. Behind the wall the world seems to have come to an end. She lives on in her own little world, surviving with her animals. Despite the apocalyptic setting this book felt somehow soothing. I loved how the woman lives with nature and her animals. Thanks for bringing this to my radar @batsy

sarahbarnes Great review. I loved this one too and felt the same. 🩵🩵 1d

Cathythoughts Sounds good. Stacking. 19h
Anna40 I love Haushofer! She also wrote short stories. I even translated one but the Austrian publisher didn‘t want to give me permission to send it to a literary magazine for publication. Unless they translate her whole collection it will probably remain untranslated :(. She was brilliant. 15h
batsy Nice review! Yes, there was something soothing and ultimately hopeful about it in a way. Happy you liked it. 13h
BarbaraBB @Anna40 That is so cool! And such a pity you couldn‘t publish it. I‘d love to read more by her. 13h

#52bookclub24 Here are the next 4 books I've read for the challenge. I tagged my favourite out of the four, which made me think a lot. “Go Set a Watchman“ and “The Magnolia Palace“ were disappointments; “Never Let Me Go“ was sad and depressing but beautifully written.

Librarybelle Great choices! 2d

Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for this #ALC !

With elements of mystery & romance & set in Ireland, the story follows a family, the family manor, & a secret that can tear everything from apart. I think I enjoyed listening to the story more, with an Irish voice actress doing the narration. This is the first in a series, so I‘ll be interested to see how the series progresses. A good distraction listen. #52BookClub24 #TheWordSecretInTheTitle

This is a book with very little plot and lots of stream of consciousness. A woman is intrigued by a couple she doesn‘t know but meets every day in a breakfast place in Madrid. One day the husband is killed and she can‘t stop herself from talking to the woman.
Not much more happens yet it is an engaging read with some interesting thoughts.

sarahbarnes This sounds very intriguing. I remember reading another book by the author years ago, and now can‘t remember the title. 3d
BarbaraBB @Dilara I tried that one once but it is such a chunkster and I didn‘t dare to continue! 3d
Dilara @BarbaraBB My version has 360 pages, so not too bad but still a commitment. I did have to push myself a little bit to finish it though 😚 3d
BarbaraBB @Dilara i must be remembering another of his books then 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d

A Deadly Walk in Devon | Nicholas George

A unique almost cozy featuring an LGBT male MC…Chase is still mourning the death of his love Doug and decides to take part in a walking tour of Devon, England. He‘s a former police investigator and has to utilize his skills fairly quickly. The murder takes place against a descriptive backdrop. Slight homage to Agatha Christie - very slight, but the twists are there. I read this one in less than 24 hours! #52BookClub24 #TimeFrameSpansAWeekOrLess

A low pick for me. The story was so-so but I liked the 18th-century London setting of this historical mystery and its references to real-life characters.

I'm using this for prompt 2 (Bibliosmia: A smelly book) of #52bookclub24. My daughter, who knows I love Penguin green mysteries, found this old musty copy. I'm sure it smells just like the London bookshop where she got it!

Librarybelle Good choice for the prompt! 1w
Hooked_on_books This is such an unusual prompt. I like what you picked for it! 1w

Another good installment in the October Daye series, but I did find one thing disappointing. I was excited that this book was set in Toronto (close to where I live) but almost all the action happened in the hidden faerie realm. The only Toronto references were the overused Tim Hortons jokes. We really do have more than Tim Hortons here in Canada! 😄

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉🎉 1w
Librarybelle I‘ve heard of Tim Horton‘s but did not realize it‘s a Canadian company 1w

Hooked_on_books But Timbits are so good! Especially the chocolate ones. Yum! 1w
kwmg40 @Librarybelle They're not wholly Canadian these days, as there is some foreign ownership, but Tim's was founded in the 1960's by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton, and there's pretty much a Tim's in every Canadian city and town, no matter how small. 1w
Librarybelle Good to know! I think I‘ve seen one near Erie, Pennsylvania but have not visited. 1w
kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books My family had to try the Timbiebs (a collaboration with Justin Bieber) when they came out, but my favourites remain the chocolate glazed and old fashioned. 1w
TheAromaofBooks Yes, we have Tim Horton's here in Ohio... TimBits are the best!! 1w
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Nice to see appreciation of Tim's elsewhere in the world! My daughter lives in London where a Tim's opened up recently. She said there were long lineups, which seemed weird to us, as Tim's is just the local no-frills coffee shop to us Canadians. 😄 1w
