Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories
Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories | Washington Irving
43 posts | 66 read | 17 to read
Before the fall premiere of the new television series, read the original legend of Ichabod Crane, the Headless Horseman, and the singularly spooky town of Sleepy Hollow in Washington Irving's classic book When Washington Irving first published this collection of essays, sketches, and talesoriginally entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.readers greeted it with enthusiasm, and Irving emerged as America's first successful professional author. This volume includes "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," two of America's most recognizable and loved works of fiction and displays Irving's ability to depict American landscapes and culture so vividly that readers feel themselves a part of them. And it is on the basis of these two classic tales that Irving is generally credited with inventing the short story as a distinct literary genre. Also included here are gently ironic pieces about life in England that reflect the author's interest in the traditions of the Old World and his longings for his home in the New.

Though slow paced, I did enjoy some of these stories and essays, there are a wide range of adventures though most are based in England and seem to obsess over the 'old world'. Many are written so passionately and I've got to say that Irving can potray admiration well through his poetic writing style. My favourites in this book were; The Wife, Rip Van Winkle , Rural Funerals, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow was so good but more romance.

Just finished The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (just the short story), for the first time in years. Not bad, although I thought it would be a little spookier. I wish I‘d finished it yesterday, but I‘m glad to be done now.

Just enough time before Halloween to read the 5 issues of Sleepy Hollow in #serialreader! More silly than scary, the fun story so perfectly encapsulates the feeling of autumn for me I read it every year around this time.

“On mounting a rising ground, which brought the figure of his fellow-traveller in relief against the sky, gigantic in height, and muffled in a cloak, Ichabod was horror-struck, on perceiving that he was headless!—but his horror was still more increased, on observing that the head, which should have rested on his shoulders, was carried before him on the pommel of the saddle.”

We all know the story.
Now it‘s time to read it!

“When the spooks have a midnight jamboree
They break it up with fiendish glee
The ghosts are bad but the one that‘s cursed
Is the headless horseman; he‘s the worst
That‘s right, he‘s a fright on Halloween night! When he goes a joggin‘ ‘cross the land
Holding his noggin in his hand
Demons take one look and groan
And they hit the road to parts unknown
Beware, take care he rides alone!”

Irving's writings, layered and surprisingly entertaining for being over a century old, are classic by every sense, standing the test of time, and it's easy to see why Ichabod Crane's ghostly encounter is one of America's greatest tales.

I love the many variations of Sleepy Hollow and The Headless Horseman. A few of my favs are the t.v. show and the Tim Burton version but my absolute favorite is the animated version, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow! It's such a classic. I remember watching it all the time as a child and being so hypnotized as Ichabod rides his horse through the dark bridge and listens to the frogs croak "Ichabod", sooo good!

What's scarier than an angry headless man throwing pumpkins at people? And of course I had to include the story that Ichabod the cat got his name from 😺

“He was tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together. His head was small, and flat on top, with huge ears, large green glassy eyes, and a long snipe nose, so that it looked like a weather-cock perched upon his spindle next to tell which way the wind blew.”

Today was my neighborhood's Fall Into Art festival. People were still busy painting when I came in to make dinner at 6pm. It was not at all autumnal today- 85 degrees and humid. I hope it gets cooler soon. I'm looking forward to wearing sweaters and boots again.

booksandsympathy I'm so happy that it's only around 85° here. I was thinking it felt like fall today. Lol. We don't have humidity though. 7y

This doesn't exactly fit the prompt, but I'm a bit of a #wannabe runner. But I don't actually run...partially because I have crappy knees and partially because I'm lazy. I have, however, been trying to motivate myself to get off my butt and move more by taking part in some literary-themed virtual races via Yes.fit! My latest conquest was 25.3 miles (not all at once) for the Sleepy Hollow Redux. Pretty proud of myself. 😊 #90sInJuly

I signed up when they were doing the Always run for Alan Rickman. 😭❤️I actually don't sign up for many of those races, though, because I don't really want the medals. If they would send me t-shirts instead, I'd be in big trouble...but instead, I just send my Charity Miles to Hufflepuff for fun! Which house are you? 7y

I was planning on reading the paper version of this book for Halloween but fell behind on my reading goals. Then I found this audio version on Overdrive and I'm so glad I did! This is a play adapted from the original story and performed on radio theatre. The narrative followed the original very closely and I enjoyed it immensely. If you happen to come across this audio version of the story, do yourself a favour and listen to it. 5/5⭐️

CogsOfEncouragement I read this not too too long ago. I enjoyed it immensely. 8y

When I was a child, nothing freaked me out more than the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow. Of course, over the years, I came to see the story as it was meant to be: a charming folktale. And many years later while researching my family history, I discovered some of my ancestors are among the dead in Sleepy Hollow's Old Dutch Church cemetery. Another ancestor haunts a manor further north, I hear. Sometimes family can be the scariest of all.
