Piece of the World
Piece of the World | Christina Baker Kline
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the smash bestseller Orphan Train, a stunning and atmospheric novel of friendship, passion, and art, inspired by Andrew Wyeth s mysterious and iconic painting Christina s World. "Later he told me that he d been afraid to show me the painting. He thought I wouldn t like the way he portrayed me: dragging myself across the field, fingers clutching dirt, my legs twisted behind. The arid moonscape of wheatgrass and timothy. That dilapidated house in the distance, looming up like a secret that won t stay hidden." To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family s remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than twenty years, she was host and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth, and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the twentieth century. As she did in her beloved smash bestseller Orphan Train, Christina Baker Kline interweaves fact and fiction in a powerful novel that illuminates a little-known part of America s history. Bringing into focus the flesh-and-blood woman behind the portrait, she vividly imagines the life of a woman with a complicated relationship to her family and her past, and a special bond with one of our greatest modern artists. Told in evocative and lucid prose, A Piece of the World is a story about the burdens and blessings of family history, and how artist and muse can come together to forge a new and timeless legacy."

When I picked up this book from my mail box I was surprised and thought, what a pretty package from a book I bought from a seller because I didn‘t see the address🤦🏽‍♀️Then, I opened it and thought, did I buy this book🤔and then I saw it was from @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 😍What a lovely surprise. Yes, it has been 2 difficult 2 months. A lot of changes, trying to get that interior/exterior balance. Immerse on a lot of uncertainties⬇️

Gissy Trying to accept what I can‘t control and trying to transcend life circumstances. Many things to learn and modify.

This was a lovely surprise and it meant a lot to me. Grateful for this detail and your kind words. #LitsyLove A big hug from the distance @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 🥰♥️♥️♥️

Gorgeous fictional telling behind the famous painting “Christina‘s World” by Andrew Wyeth. Lovely glimpse into her life, made harder by the lonely Maine coast living, and her degenerative disease that made walking impossible. I think the book club is going to love this one.

This book falls within the genre of historical fiction. Based on extensive research, the author presents a captivating look into a woman who becomes the muse for Andrew Speth‘s well-known 1948 painting. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy historical fiction and/or readers interested in visual art. Full review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4912301114

Audio book. I finally did get some interest towards the end of the book, but by then, I didn‘t know who some of the characters were. And surprise! As I peruse some of the other reviews, I had no idea this was based on a real painting by a real artist. I‘m not much into art.

This is the best book I‘ve read in the past 5 years. Kline‘s writing is raw and poetic and true to life. The storyline has an original protagonist who is rarely the centerpiece of a novel. The story is a delightful and soulcrushing mix of beautiful and bittersweet

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a really beautiful fictional story about the real Christina from Andrew Wyeth‘s painting Christina‘s World. She is a woman who suffered from a genetic syndrome that damages the nerves in the arms and legs. I learned a lot about the artist and the woman especially in the Author‘s Note. I recommend this for anyone who likes a quite but very thoughtful story based on real people. This was my #bookspinbingo No 12 for November

4.5⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. I think what I liked about the book is g while the book went back and forth, is that it used a similar cast of characters and didn‘t try to introduce a whole new cast of characters in the time shifting. I had never heard of the painting prior to this book and appreciated that the author put a copy of the painting at the back of the book. #2020 #historicalfiction #bookreview #bookstagram #fiction

What a great story! I hate to admit it but I never really thought about the real life woman that was the subject of the famous painting portrayed on this cover (although cut off for whatever reason). She was complicated and emotional and full of a love and a life that wasn‘t able to be fully realized (although that doesn‘t mean her life was small). Beautifully told! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2

This is a beautifully written story of Christina Olson‘s difficult life. She‘s featured in a famous painting named after her. The author did a tremendous amount of research in to the lives of the main character as well as her family, acquaintances, Maine property, and even the life of the artist himself, Andrew Wyeth. She left no stone unturned. While much of the book is fiction, it's framework is based on real people and the Olson homestead.

Christina Baker Kline opens the doors and invites us into the farmhouse in Andrew Wyeth‘s iconic painting, Christina‘s World. This fictional work offers readers a chance to understand the world of the rural Maine residents he painted. It‘s not about Wyeth very much, although Kline does imagine the relationship he had with Christina Olson and her family. It‘s a bit depressing, though.

#ICanSeeTheSunInLateDecember seems almost reflective. Identifying the bad, but seeing the good through it. Christina Olson is resilient and one who guards her life‘s events. It‘s not until Andrew Wyeth meets her that her full story is told - Kline writes a beautiful story about Olson‘s life, but Wyeth captures so much in his paintings of her. Amazing historical fiction. #WinterWonderland

I've always loved the Andrew Wyeth painting this book uses as a starting point, and I'm a sucker for an imagined history of a minor historical figure, but I nearly quit listening because it starts sloowwww. I'm so glad I stuck with it, though. It gave me so much to think about - that a quiet life can still be a good life, and the ways we use our tragedies to isolate ourselves because it's the easier path. I identified too much with that.

Booksnchill Christina‘s World is a favorite and a print hangs in my bedroom. I have been to the home and Wyeth gallery on my last trip to Maine and I highly recommend it. There is a great biography of Wyeth I reviewed here and I also recommend it.❤️ 6y
