Mythos Illustrated
Mythos Illustrated | Stephen Fry
Pre-order Mythos Illustrated. No one loves and quarrels, desires and deceives as boldly or brilliantly as Greek gods and goddesses. In Stephen Fry's vivid retelling, we gaze in wonder as wise Athena is born from the cracking open of the great head of Zeus and follow doomed Persephone into the dark and lonely realm of the Underworld. We shiver in fear when Pandora opens her jar of evil torments and watch with joy as the legendary love affair between Eros and Psyche unfolds. Mythos Illustrated captures these extraordinary myths for our modern age in stunning colour - in all their dazzling and deeply human relevance.

An illustrated edition of Stephen Fry‘s Mythos of the Greek myths.

This was a lot of fun. Fry‘s comedic chops definitely shine in these irreverent takes on the Greek myths we all already know. But he‘s also produced some versions that I had never heard of. And the illustrations were gorgeously colored and very striking. Would recommend this to any mythology collection! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

5⭐ I loved learning about mythology during my college years and before starting my final exams for my last year of college I started reading this book and I was so excited becausefor me it was excellent. Then right after my last exam more than a year ago my head said "nope! We're not reading anymore" But fortunately that passed and as soon as I managed to hold a book for more than 5 seconds I went back to this one and I finished it today. ➡

Seeking_Serenity I'm so happy that I managed to finish it and I might be biased a little but I LOVEDDD this book so much that I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes reading about greek mythology! It's so well written and engaging. 1y
julieclair I had the same reaction after college graduation. I went out and purchased a trendy best seller without any literary value whatsoever. Reading that one book “cured” me and I went back to reading good books. 😆 1y
Seeking_Serenity @julieclair oh I wish there was anything that cured me I just kept on trying to read every so often till my brain accepted reading again. I think I was not able to read because I was so stressed in college and I read a lot for my projects and exams along with reading 100 books that has nothing to do with college for my reading challenge on goodreads that my head overloaded on books and stopped liking it 😂💔 1y

julieclair 100 books on top of your college reading? Yikes!!! No wonder your head got overloaded! 🤯 1y
Seeking_Serenity @julieclair yeah when I'm stressed or sad or feeling anything I can't handle on my own I like to read a lot and that year was too hard for me so I didn't think rationally. 1y
julieclair Books are indeed a wonderful escape. I‘m so glad that stressful year is now behind you. 1y

Husband and I are reading a story a day. 🤓 Filling in lots of gaps and the bizarre antics are such fun!

I say this about every other day, but I would have never guessed in a million years I would like mythology. I was dreading it when I began my Humanities grad program just about 4 years ago now, but to my great delight loved ALL the earliest lit! The first piece, Gilgamesh, was a revelation!

Cuilin Love this. I listened to Stephen read it on Audible ❤️ 1y

This was a great collection of Greek myths, told with Stephen Fry's wry sense of humor and wit. Definitely recommend the audiobook which he reads himself. There are so many characters and stories but it is easy to follow if you don't get too caught up in the ancestry. I especially enjoyed how he explains the Greek origin of a lot of words based on certain names or stories.

So pleased that I purchased this wonderful series. These editions are gorgeously illustrated and have great footnotes with plenty of explanations and I really enjoyed reading some of the notes about how modern language has been adapted from the Greek myths. Can't wait to read the rest of the books, after a brief reprieve, of course. My head can only tolerate so much Greek at one time! 😂

Finishing this up today. What a great series! I've even convinced someone else to get it due to my raving and the fabulous pictures within these volumes. Always makes a bookworm smile when you turn other people on to good books
Also, the footnotes are endless. I feel like I'm reading House of Leaves, or Crime & Punishment again 🤣 the difference is I find them fascinating as I love seeing the words that have their origin from ancient Greek

Mythos is a fun and fact-filled read. It might be more of a beginner‘s guide version of Greek mythology, but I reckon even the more passionate Greek myth readers could read it just for fun. I'm about as far from a Greek myths tragic as you can imagine (I haven't even read Circe), so I appreciated Fry's accessible approach. Fry does a great job of telling the story of the Greek myths, with his own brand of humour mixed in. Whilst I enjoyed, I have to admit I prefer Greek mythology stories told within a singular story/plot. Sometimes I felt a bit lost in the many gods & myths & after a while I lost a bit of interest. I listened on audio narrated by Fry & he does a wonderful job of narrating. It's obvious Greek mythology is a passion of his. ⬇

LazyOwl Overall a great read if you want to learn more about Greek mythology and how the stories evolved over time.

I‘ve spent a lot of hours in a tractor cab the last few days doing tillage work so Dad can plant soybeans, and that means lots of audiobook time. This audiobook was fantastic. I‘ve always enjoyed mythology, and Stephen Fry‘s retellings of Greek myths are organized clearly and wonderful to listen to. I also appreciated the fun facts he included about how these myths and names can still be seen in our daily language.

I enjoyed this one and found it very interesting. I didn‘t really know a lot about the Greeks myths apart from the well known ones like Pandora, Medusa etc, and reading a few retellings like Circe by Madeline Miller. Consequently, I really liked finding out about the others. Stephen Fry‘s sense of humour shows through making it an entertaining read.

Listening to Stephen Fry is always entertaining and I too have a long and loving relationship with Greek myths. It was particularly enjoyable to augment listening to Percy Jackson with the girls with Fry‘s more traditional retellings.

After all the books I‘ve read on Greek mythology it‘s not that easy to impress me. I loved that Stephen Fry did a pretty good job overall even though I wish he‘d gone for a less mainstream version of Persephones abduction. I swear I screamed when he mentioned Percy Jackson and I love that he knows it was wrong to call Pluto a dwarf planet. I loved his acknowledgment of his own place in the retellings, and I loved how he kept things interesting ➡️

Rehesina ➡️ without butcher into them. I do think though that he was wrong when he said he wasn't offering an interpretation for the myths, he absolutely did. But he was damn good. (edited) 4y

Long as you take it easy not trying to remember all the names of Ancient Greek gods and goddesses, this is a great entertainment. I especially enjoy the additional layer of the story telling that Fry inserted to some those well-known myths, whether of the connection with a different version under different culture/era, or of the origins of words. And Fry‘s narratives in the audiobook is just so funny and superb! Love his imagination.

This was an absolute pleasure to listen to. I greatly enjoyed the references to Neil Gaiman (another lover of mythology) and Percy Jackson (who brought many to mythology for the first time), really turning this into a version of these myths for everyone. The etymological tidbits throughout are good fun. I quite enjoyed Fry‘s appendices at the end, adding a little nonfiction to the mix.
