My first #10BeforetheEnd book. I did enjoy it, particularly in its frank depiction of ancient Athens society during the Peloponnesian Wars. The main character comes from a noble Athenian family and Renault doesn‘t try to hide the ways Athenian culture differs from our modern sense of morality or ethics. At the heart of this is a love story between two men, which was completely accepted then. It was a slow and dense read, but worth the time.

This was fun and a nice distraction from … all this.

Little by little I‘m working through #serieslove2024 and #tenbeforetheend while I figure out what to read for the rest of the year.

1. This time of year, at least, it‘s sunrise.
2. Worst petsitting job (ever)*
* I set aside The Grey Wolf for now for reasons I‘ll describe in the comments.
#two4tuesday on Wednesday

Susanita Armand was describing a situation in which the PM could invoke the War Measures Act and give the federal government unlimited power, and that‘s too close to home now. I‘ll pick it back up later, but for now I‘ll go with light hearted mythological kids on a quest. 2w

Bookwormjillk Were you on the Louise Penny/Hillary Clinton online conversation a few years ago when Hillary said she likes mysteries because the bad guys get caught in the end. I think of that often. (I‘m reading Grey Wolf now too.) 2w
Susanita @Bookwormjillk No, I missed that! I‘ve seen her a couple times in person, though, and I appreciate how passionate she is about the mystery genre. (edited) 2w

Well Persephone and hades have done the right thing, set boundaries. Plus after a confrontation with Apollo how will things progress?

And just like that Eros has gone from being one of the worst characters to one of the best. He knows Persephone‘s secret and he wants to keep her safe. All while she‘s trying to make her life decisions moving forward.

Fascinating and enjoyable are not how I would have described reading this. I‘ve had this on my tbr since 2016, I‘ve always imagined this to be a difficult read, but instead it was the complete opposite, and what a read!!! I didn‘t grasp everything but I was okay with this as I intend to read this several more times more whilst trying to get more familiar with global ancient history.

As historic and fun as these fables are, we should move on from them. These fables are sexist because all of the stories only have male characters. They are innocent, but we have to move on from them.

Today finds me in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian Wars following the fate of young Alexias, an Athenian noble, as he matures, meets his mentor and lover Lysis, becomes a soldier and sailor… He also encounters Socrates, Plato, and other famous Greek names which have come down to us through history. Slow read, but satisfying.

LeahBergen I haven‘t read a Renault in ages. I should grab one off my shelves! 3w
Ruthiella @LeahBergen It‘s super slooooow. The other two from Renault that I have read were a lot plottier: The Persian Boy and (edited) 3w
LeahBergen Oh, is it? The two I‘ve read are The King Must Die and The Bull From the Sea. And maybe another one? 🤔 3w

Greek myths retold for a very young audience; Theseus is described as a good king for listening to his mum, and Medea as wicked and naughty.

Parts of this are outdated but my younger self would have still found these stories fun and engaging. Here there‘s adventures, a little bit of magic, monsters to fight, some quirky characters and heroic deeds. When the book ended I wanted it to carry on and tell me more stories.
