Bad Seed: A Vintage Movie Classic
Bad Seed: A Vintage Movie Classic | William March
The bestselling novel that inspired Mervyn LeRoy's classic horror film about the little girl who can get away with anything--even murder. There's something special about eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark. With her carefully plaited hair and her sweet cotton dresses, she's the very picture of old-fashioned innocence. But when their neighborhood suffers a series of terrible accidents, her mother begins to wonder: Why do bad things seem to happen when little Rhoda is around? Originally published in 1954, William March's final novel was an instant bestseller and National Book Award finalist before it was adapted for the stage and made into a 1956 film. The Bad Seed is an indelible portrait of an evil that wears an innocent face, one which still resonates in popular culture today. With a new foreword by Anna Holmes. Vintage Movie Classics spotlights classic films that have stood the test of time, now rediscovered through the publication of the novels on which they were based.

Loved it! Christine Penmark begins to suspect that her daughter Rhoda is hiding dark tendencies. Even if you haven‘t read it or seen the movie, I think most people know the plot. It‘s very dated (1954) but such a good read and Rhoda Penmark should still be considered one of the best villains. Part of me wishes there would have been a sequel but it was also a perfect ending.

AmyG I love this movie. The old black and white one. 3y
EvieBee I loved this book! Film is great too. 3y

Here are my May #Bookspin selections. (Which I've swapped out 9 times so far)
I'll never get through all 20 of the #bookspinbonanza but I'm stacking the deck with short reads to see how far I can go. @TheAromaofBooks

Gissy I'm planning to read Severance for Asian Readathon next month! 5y
CindyMyLifeIsLit If you‘re like me, you need tissues close at hand when you read Texts From Jane Eyre. I was definitely crying, but it was from laughing so hard!! 😂😂😂 5y
MaleficentBookDragon @CindyMyLifeIsLit oh good. I could use that. 5y

ErinSBecker Ooooh Texts from Jane Eyre was sooo good! I got it from the library and then immediately bought a copy for a friend. 5y

"Cute little Rhonda Penmark. So charming, such an old fashioned girl. Yet, something about Rhonda makes people uneasy. Is it her need to possess things? Dear little Rhonda always gets what she wants. And if anything, anyone gets in her way,she gets rid of it...or him..or her. So neatly. So efficiently. It's frightening, it's murderous."

? a horror/thriller classic, a must read for any Halloween!

@JoScho there was much squealing when I opened my #summerslasherbookswap package. Each thing was better than the last. I want to read all the books but especially The Bad Seed. That movie scared me to death when I was a kid. I absolutely love everything but my favorites are the Jaws/Little Mermaid socks, Penneywise tote and Stripe. Thank you! Thank you!
And Meg is coming with me on my trip this week. I plan to read it by the pool.

Good, but a little long winded and hard to read... however, if you can stick it out and get into it, it makes for a really cool read. Super creepy in an interesting way, too.

Rhoda Penmark seems like a sweet, innocent, and very proper 8 year old girl -- but that is just the surface. When there is something she wants, she will do anything necessary to get what she wants. The tension, though, comes not from wondering what Rhoda will do, it comes from watching her mother try to figure out how to handle her daughter's nature. Dark and creepy, the novel was the basis for a 1956 horror film.

#TBRtemptation post 4! The smash-hit 1954 classic thriller is re-issued with supplemental material. It went on a to a million-copy bestseller, be a Broadway hit, and adapted for the cinema. What happens when to an ordinary family when a child serial killer is born to it? This book helped pioneer the creepy kid trope to popular effect. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

I feel asleep reading this last night (and had some pretty weird dreams) then immediately finished it upon waking. THAT ENDING. I'm never ever ever having children jesus

tysephine I spent the whole second half of the book thinking KILL IT WITH FIRE which...was prescient but not in the way I meant. 8y
tysephine I can't get Rhoda's little cutesy "What will you give me if I give you a basket of kisses?" routine out of my head. I don't know if I should torture myself and watch the movie now or if it will ruin my life completely. 8y
