One Perfect Couple
One Perfect Couple | Ruth Ware
Harkening to Agatha Christies classic And Then There Were None, this high-tension and ingenious thriller follows five couples trapped on a storm-swept island as a killer stalks among themfrom Ruth Ware, the New York Times bestselling author who is turning out to be as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime (The Washington Post). Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctoral research has fizzled out, shes pretty sure they wont extend her contract, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, arent going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, The Perfect Couple, she decides to try out with him. A whirlwind audition process later, Lyla find herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couplesBayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi, and Conor and Zanain order to win a cash prize. But not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start to go wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla finds that this game show is all too realand the stakes are life or death. A fast-paced, spellbinding thriller rife with intrigue and characters that feel so true to life, this novel proves yet again that Ruth Ware is the queen of psychological suspense.

For the #comfortreadathon I‘m settling in with my cats, a blanket (though it‘s 75 degrees out… in November), and a mystery my dad lent me. I‘m in the middle of The Collected Regrets of Clover, but that feels a little too somber and contemplative. I think something scandalous and outlandish will be better at holding my attention. My goal is not to be on my phone for chunks of at least an hour.

LiteraryinPA I voted this morning, BTW. 1w

Ware's books are always super easy to slip into, and you're always guaranteed a thrilling mystery. My copy might have been an #audiobook; however, that didn't make it any less of a pageturner! Side note: I didn't love the way she started to wrap this one up, so I spent quite a while ranting at the narrator. Thankfully the author did bring it all around in the end though.

I tend to enjoy Ruth Ware books and this was no different. I felt anxious most of this book due to the situation the characters were in so it took me a little longer to get through than her books typically do. If you like feeling the stress along with the characters this one is for you! Another excellent read 😊

Read this in two days. Not that it was the best book ever but I did need to know where it was taking me. Reality TV, 10 couples take a trip to an exotic island to “win”. If you have watched any reality show we now all know and think, which one did they choose to stir the pot, to be the villain? Loved that she chose a woman scientist to be the fact “finder”. I liked this book, just a fun, who did it and why read.

I knew that was ridiculous, that abusers often went for the trophy girlfriend, and then ground them down. Perhaps half the triumph was in slashing down the tallest poppy.

This was an overall entertaining summer thriller. It takes place on an island and features a reality competition, but it really shows what happens when things go very wrong. I liked the characters overall, but they did feel a little two dimensional at times. This did keep me tense through the end though so I would recommend for a fun quick read. 3.5⭐️

I might be over Ruth Ware 😬😬😬. I‘m not a huge mystery fan anymore. They give me too much anxiety 😆. This is the first new book of hers I‘ve read in 3 releases.

I did like this one, but I had to read it in big chunks to get through it. I thought it was going to have a different twist at the end, but I liked it overall.

willaful I gave up on most romantic suspense for the same reason. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks It's funny because actually romance has been what's stressing me out lately?? I can't deal with miscommunications and misunderstandings right now. I never thought I'd turn to thrillers for comfort reads instead 😂 3mo
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I get like that too with romances! I think that‘s why I‘ve mostly been reading fantasy lately! 3mo

This was good but not a favorite Ruth Ware (I‘ve read her canon). I‘ve read several And-then-there-were-none type thrillers of late so I‘m getting picky. I thought too many pages were dedicated to characters that weren‘t a part of the final showdown. I would liked more character development of the characters who made it home.

Cathythoughts I‘m getting picky myself 🤣. What would be one of your favourites by her ? 🙏 x 4mo

Haven't read Ruth Ware in while, and even though I struggled with telling the characters apart at the beginning, I soon was devoured by the story. It kept me hooked during a time, I could hardly focus for 20 pages, so I'd say this counts for something. And yes, of course the Lost vibe totally got me. At the end, I was impressed by what these women could do.

This is a soft pick for me. I love the premise of the story - a reality show gone terribly wrong - and I enjoy Ruth Ware‘s writing style, however I honestly didn‘t find this very mysterious or thrilling. It‘s clear really quickly who the “bad guy” is and after that it‘s just about survival. The ending also just felt meh to me and there weren‘t any big reveals or shocks, which would have made it better in my opinion. Middle of the road. 🌟🌟🌟💫

Love Island meets Lord of the Flies in this intense thriller. A compelling read where I didn‘t know who to trust at first. The claustrophobic feeling of the island is really well depicted as is the paranoia. When the villain of the piece starts to be revealed, the suspense increases, the characters‘ anxieties ratchet up and the pace escalates. I very much enjoyed it - it kept me turning the pages. #TBC on Facebook

I always look forward to Ware‘s latest; while this isn‘t my favorite, I still had fun reading it! The first third or so drags quite a bit with the setup & cast intros. Lyla begrudgingly agrees to accompany her wannabe actor boyfriend to a remote Indonesian island to film a couples-based reality show. She & Nico make a plan of their own, but one storm changes everything and making this far from a staged competition for survival. The pace picks up!

Lyla & Nico feel the clocks ticking on their careers.

When Nico is offered a couples slot on a reality TV show he begs Lyla to come with him. She begrudgingly agrees.

5 couples, diverse & I liked them all. Things don‘t go as expected & pretty soon you have a One by One scenario on a miserably hot island ravaged by a storm with no hope of rescue.

Great narration! Helped my burnout!

This was a really good book! I knew there was a reason I don‘t like reality shows. 😉 This is somewhat in the line of Agatha Christie‘s “And Then There Were None.” It‘s also similar to Ware‘s book, “One by One”, only instead of being surrounded by snow the people in this book are stranded on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean with limited supplies. This is definitely a must read.

Ware‘s books are really hit or miss for me. If you‘re looking into this book thinking it‘s a page turning thriller, that it is not. I liked the main character and that‘s why I kept reading, hoping something more exciting would happen. I‘m not really a fan of locked room mysteries or “stuck on a deserted island” mysteries & there have been a lot of those lately. The reality show bit made it interesting. Overall 3/5 stars.

Things are not going great at postdoc virologist Lyla‘s job, so when her struggling actor boyfriend begs her to go onto a couples reality show, she reluctantly agrees. After arrival at the tropical island, things don‘t exactly go as planned. I loved this and could not put it down.

Ruth Ware is such a great thriller writer and this one did not disappoint. This is a modern take on the locked room mystery trope. Using reality tv as a backdrop and social media elements to make the characters relatable, the author takes a trope we all know and gives it fresh life. With "And Then There Were None", "Lord of the Flies", and "Animal Farm" vibes throughout, Ware weaves together a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.
