A Winter in New York
A Winter in New York: A Novel | Josie Silver
A young chef stumbles on a secret family recipe that might lead her to the loveand lifeshe's been looking for in this stunning novel from the New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December When Iris decides to move to New York and restart her culinary career, she realizes she underestimated how big the Big Apple really isall the nostalgic, New York-set movies she'd watched with her mom while eating their special secret-recipe ice cream didn't quite do it justice. And after spending the last few years in a relationship with a man who kept her world as small as possible, she's feeling a little overwhelmed by it all. But Bobby, Iris's best friend, isn't about to let her hide away. He convinces her to come with him to a famous autumn street fair in Little Italy. As they walk around enjoying all the food and life the neighborhood has to offer, a little family-run gelato shop catches her eyeit's the same shop that's in an old photo of her mother's. When Iris returns the next day out of curiosity, she meets the handsome Gio and learns that the shop is in danger of closing. His uncle, sole keeper of their secret family gelato recipe, is in a coma so the family can't make more. When Iris samples the last remaining batch, she realizes that their gelato recipe and her ice cream recipe are one and the same. But how can she tell them she knows it, when she's not sure why Gio's uncle gave it to her mother in the first place? So Iris offers her services as a chef to help them recreate the recipe and begins to find herself falling for Gio and his family. But when Gio's uncle finally wakes up, all of the secrets Iris has been keeping threaten to ruin the new lifeand new loveshe's been building all winter long.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loss, love, secrets, lies, and generally too much going on for my taste. But it was entertaining enough. Mourning the death of her mom, then a bad (good) break up, Iris seeks a geographical fix in NYC. She finds herself essentially immersed in a life that once belonged to her mother. Enjoyed the writing, but “liar revealed” tropes stress me the hell out. Nonetheless, it was an easy read to cap off our #bookclub year.

I enjoyed this but not quite as much as some of the author‘s other books. What I liked was the unusual reason the two leads meet up — gelato! — and the male MC‘s family and the female MC‘s friendship with her boss. But the whole time just wanted to scream, tell the truth, just tell the truth. I know that would‘ve made for a shorter story, but I didn‘t love that plot device. This was my #BookSpin for February.

I am waffling between soft pick and high so-so. I liked so many things about it: love story, the generational aspect, setting BUT I didn‘t like the secretiveness of the MC.

This book has a slow start. But once I reached the halfway point I flew through it. The characters are what made this book for me. The plot needed some work. Mainly it needed to move along at the beginning. Enjoyed but wished the execution was better. Around 4⭐️.

And so it begins, my quest to review every book I read in 2024. This one‘s pretty cute, and funny, but ultimately middling for me. I would have loved a less neat ending, and perhaps a little more of Vivien‘s story to make it slightly less saccharine.

I first discovered Josie Silver through the #SundayBuddyRead and loved her ever since. Her latest book, A Winter In New York was my favourite book for #June for #12Booksof2023, absolutely loved the story and the characters in this one. A must read.

Also loved A Dangerous Place by Jacqueline Winspear, which was my other 5 star book during June.

Okay, this was sadly one of the worst romance books I've ever read. I HATE miscommunication tropes because I've never understood why a person would keep big secrets rather than just have an honest conversation. The lies just keep piling up in this book and it has the cringiest sex scene I've probably ever read. I'm so disappointed because I've really loved Josie Silver's writing in the past, but this ain't it.

Smrloomis Ugh sorry that was so disappointing! 11mo

Overall this is entertaining and it‘s a quick read, but it wasn‘t really my thing I guess. More spoiler-y thoughts in the comments. I‘m not a huge rom-com person so this was just okay for me.

Kristin_Reads I was pretty annoyed with the MC Iris most of the book for not clarifying so many things sooner. Also, I kept wondering who/where was Gio‘s mom. And I kept hoping she was right about who her dad was otherwise things could have turned out very awkward! 11mo

This has two major miscommunications in the first 25% of the book and I don‘t see them being resolved quickly so I‘m bailing. I really dislike the plot completely being held up by a lack of a simple truthful conversation.

So, here we go with a cheesy Christmas romance. Setting myself up for my usual romance-disappointment perhaps? Actually, no! Yes, I did some eye rolling. Yes, there was a part of the storyline I just couldn‘t buy into. But - and maybe it‘s the Christmas spirit, or maybe I‘ve not got a heart of stone after all - it got me in the end, I embraced it for what it was, I loved it and I cried FOUR times. Excellent (DO NOT READ ON THE TRAM THO😆😭)

Sweet like vanilla gelato! Alas, also like the gelato, the story felt a little too… vanilla. Josie Silver didn‘t capture the holiday magic or the big romantic feels for me in this one like she did in “One Day in December”. 🎧

So much about this story was super sweet to read even though I wanted to shake Iris for her easily avoidable rolling snowball of little white lies. …For intrigue purposes I wish they‘d have tweaked Irises recipe angle a bit where she didn‘t know what she had (not a spoiler, it happens early) until an HEA ending.

Josie Silver always delivers. This time with a heartwarming story of having the courage to start over in very different ways/circumstances. Iris, a young chef, moves from England to NY abruptly and finds herself alone but for the memories of her mother‘s time spent there. As she begins to discover the city, she comes across a family-run gelateria that is pictured in one of her mother‘s old photos. She meets Gio, a widower raising 🔻

robinb his teenaged daughter and running the shop for his uncle who is hospitalized and in a coma. Upon awaking Gio‘s uncle cannot remember the recipe for their famous gelato which Iris discovers is the exact same recipe that her mother always made…how is that possible and what is her mother‘s connection to the shop? This is a story with multiple facets…secrets, heartache for those lost, a mystery, and learning to 🔻 14mo
robinb step out to live again after traumatic life events. The characters are fun and lovely (both mains and secondaries). The plot, a bit frustrating at times, also shines with a slow-burn chemistry and all the feels of standing up for those we love and willing to sacrifice for their happiness above our own. I totally fell for Iris and Gio and am already anticipating Silver‘s next endeavor. Highly recommend. 4.5/5⭐️ 14mo
