Mickey7: A Novel | Edward Ashton

The Martian meets Multiplicity in Edward Ashton's high concept science fiction thriller, in which Mickey7, an "expendable," refuses to let his replacement clone Mickey8 take his place. Dying isnt any fun...but at least its a living. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever theres a mission thats too dangerouseven suicidalthe crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal...and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it. On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7s fate has been sealed. Theres a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein. Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7. That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.

My 2nd Ashton book &while I can see many loving this book, it fell a little short 4 me. My problem was not being able 2 connect 2 Mickey or the characters. Ashton writes stories similar 2 Andy Weir, but where Weir‘s stories are infused w/ humor & humanity, Ashton‘s has the humor but is missing that depth that I love so much in this genre.
Still, I would recommend his books 2 those who enjoy speculative sci-fi that doesn‘t take itself 2 seriously.

44/150 Multiple deaths and resurrections shouldn't be this amusing, but this book is genuinely funny. Mickey is a great character, who's developed a unique view on life as an expendable, the person who does the dangerous, life ending jobs, knowing he'll be brought back in a new cloned body. Witty and often laugh out loud funny 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

4.5 ⭐This book was so much fun. Space travel takes time, and for most it is a one-way trip. Mickey just needed off his planet, and the only way to get out of trouble was taking a job as the expendable on a one-way trip to terraform a new planet. His job is to die. His conscience and everything that makes Mickey Mickey, is uploaded, preferably frequently, and when the crew need someone to do something dangerous, or something that will

LibrarianRyan surely cause death, that is Mickey‘s job.

We start this book with Mickey out on exploration. He is exploring a set of caves when he falls, and his friend/crew mate, says he‘s not performing a rescue, and that Mickey can just pop the hatch and they will print a new one. This is Mickey‘s job. He knows it, but he has this thing about purposefully killing himself. He can‘t do it. With a little help of a giant fuzzy caterpillar, Mickey makes it
1y
LibrarianRyan back to base by morning, with minimal injuries. The only problem, when he makes it all the way to his bunk, and finds out Mickey 8 is in his bed, freshly regenerated. And while they are both the same person, they are both alive, and both hope to stay that way.
This book is both a look at the complications of technology like this, as well as the ethical and religious beliefs in this practice (it‘s not preachy). But it is done with the whit and
1y
LibrarianRyan wisdom one would find in the Murderbot books. This book is funny, heart tugging, and will keep readers at the end of their seats at times. It is well thought out, flows at just the right pace and make you keep turning the page. This is a duology, but one could just read this book and be just fine. It has an ending, that works well, and will satisfy readers. 1y
mabell This sounds fun! 1y

Mickey7 signed up as an "Expendable" on a mission to establish a beachhead colony on a distant world. His job: to take on all the tasks most likely to get him killed, then have his memories downloaded into a fresh new body. It all goes wrong when he returns from a failed mission to find Mickey8 in his bunk. An entertaining SF novel for fans of John Scalzi's Redshirts and protagonists who are interesting screw-ups.

Loved this book! Mickey as the narrator is the best! Would you join space exploration if you were an expandable and they could recreate you every time that you died? Oh Mickey your so fine!😂. I‘ll be reading the next Mickey novel. Great science fiction.

Wowza!! What an unexpectedly fun read!! Science fiction isn‘t a go-to genre for me, but this one sounded so original- & it wound up exceeding my expectations! Mickey7 is his planetary colony‘s Expendable- meaning he‘s there as a real-time test dummy that can be brought back with basically a printer & uploaded memories. But this 7th version‘s story doesn‘t follow protocols… Funny & fascinating, I couldn‘t put it down! Can‘t wait for the sequel!

A success insofar as I'm curious enough to pick up the next book with this character. It's understandable given the events described, that the main character has a certain detachment, but it was effective enough to make me feel detached for much of the story. I think this is another entry in the 'ending makes the book' category. What is the value of life? Anthropocentrism aside...clones do bring out the worst case scenarios in writers.

Robotswithpersonality Bonus points for the Atlas Shrugged clap back. I see what you did there. 😉 2y

Today's book award goes to the dedication that was so over the top it startled laughter out of me.
First day back at work after the holidays, that laugh was precisely what I needed. Here's hoping the rest of the book goes as well!

This was an enjoyable read, it reminds me of the Murderbot Diaries.. in terms of the tone of the main character. Really well laid out story line and plot twist at the end, overall great read. Strongly recommend.

This one was okay. I think it's going to fall right in the middle. It was fun but it spent so much time discussing his every day life I felt like I didn't get enough details to really imagine all the things on the plant and dome. I wish that would have gone into more detail instead of talking about going to the cafeteria 100 times. 3/5

What a fun read!

Mickey has signed up for a mission where he is expendable. When another version of him is created, and two of him are wandering around, madness ensues in all the best ways.

This read is immersive, fast paced, and adventurous. Mickey's character is snarky and had me laughing out loud several times.

I can't wait to revisit this world and these characters again.

vivastory I have this one on my TBR shelves. Sounds like I need to bump it up. I can't wait for the Bong Joon-Ho adaptation 3y

A Pick-ish 3½⭐
Ɱ◎◎ĐႽ » Science Fiction » Of the interstellar variety » Cloning (or the making of multiples/expendables) » A very unique concept

While the concept of “expendables” was interesting and it had loads of potential I still found myself wanting more from this. But for others, it could possibly be perfect. For me personally, I believe it droned on scientifically a little too much and didn't have enough actual story.

Mickey Barnes is an expendable on a space colony. Whenever dangerous work needs to be done, it is up to him to risk his life. Mickey7 is the seventh rebirth, and the story follows what happens when a second Mickey is accidentally created at the same time. The is a fast paced, fun and immersive read and the audio was fantastic. Loved it! #pantone2022

🎧 “Stupidest death ever.”

I read this book in one sitting. The narrator is great. I loved this book!

Mickey is the “expendable” in a terraforming colony, the job description is: immortal. Mickey has died 6 times.

There are strict laws, there can never be two Mickey‘s alive at the same time. What would happen if there were accidentally two? Well, let the fun begin as there can be only one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+ 👇🏻

Twainy Add a GF, a wannabe GF, an uptight commander who thinks M7 is an abomination, a BFF who lies, giant murderous worms and you‘ve got just the right mix for a captivating read.

There is heavier subtext, what makes a man a man? Etc. but you can ignore it & just go for the wonderful fluffy good time!

This was a fun book!! I‘d read a book two!! Well written. Will make you smile. It was fantastic! Just what I needed! Pub date 2/15/22.

julesG I would have loved to listen to this. I really liked the eARC. 3y
Twainy @julesG the narrator was great. I could see Wil Wheaton reading this too. That snarky MC. 😁 If I had to read the kindle version … well I LOVE Ogres so far (p42) & it‘s only 140 pages & I‘ve had it for 2 months. Never a free minute. 🤗 3y

Edward Ashton‘s SF novel is a breezy, entertaining read held together by Mickey7‘s excellent first person narration. Ashton does well in differentiating Mickey7 from Mickey8 and setting out the background and perils of colonisation such that it isn‘t until the end that you realise how thin the actual plot is and how slight the supporting cast. That said, there are a lot of ideas at play here and I can well understand the buzz surrounding it.

I haven‘t read science fiction in years and this was so much fun! Mickey7 is an Expendable on a colonizing mission. His job is to do the dangerous stuff. If he dies doing it, they just generate a new one.
In this book, we get a good story along with a thoughtful treatise on immortality. Is a new Mickey the same as the old Mickey.
Read it! It‘s good. Release date: Feb. 15

Quite enjoyed this story about an Expendable on a beachhead colony. Topics of immortality, what defines sentient beings, what humans do when conquering new territory.

Mickey is an expendable. Meaning, he's kind of immortal. Also, he's the one who has to do the dangerous jobs in the beachhead colony.

When the 7th instalment doesn't die, but an 8th version has already been generated; colonists die; the local fauna starts being really aggressive;...

Half way through the #ARC and really enjoying it.

Intriguing story that raises questions about what it is to be you. Mickey is the "expendable" on a deep space mission to colonize another planet. He gets all the dangerous jobs and when he dies a copy of himself is printed. Liked the plot and the character of Mickey7 was well done. 4⭐
