January 1937. 28-year-old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to join an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. After they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year, Gruhuken, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave.

Recommended by my very favorite author, this historical ghost story set in the frigid & isolated Arctic Circle, this makes for an unsettling listen. Jack joins this small research expedition, almost immediately at odds with one of his older & rougher companions. When circumstances strand him alone with the huskies, it‘s more than just the months of darkness that add to the chill… It‘s a quick listen & one that‘d make for a good book club pick!

It's almost the end of the month, so it's time for another installment of my #2024bookbracket. I accomplished a lot more reading in October compared to September. Both Sep/Oct were tough to compare as well as the bonuses as they are completely different books but I managed to make my picks with careful consideration.

Only two more months!

Thank you for tagging me! #wondrouswednesday

1. Dark Matter by Michelle Paver - spooky and haunting, I find myself thinking back to it often.

2. Functionally I enjoy audiobooks most, they help me get so much done. But also I like all forms.

3. I think that might be classic lit. But fantasy is a close second.

It has been two months so it's time to post the new installment of my #2024bookbracket. I read a lot more in August than I did in July but I still struggled a bit to decide which one is my top read for August. Looking forward to seeing what I pick for September.

I think I tried to pick this up years ago, but didn't get into it. I now finished it in two days.

I really enjoyed how atmospheric it was and the profound feeling of loneliness persisted so well when I got deeper into the book. It definitely echoes Man vs Nature with a sprinkling of Man vs. Himself. In essence, it is a story of survival and perseverance.

Doppoetry It was also nice to see a queer character being represented in this time period. it was also nice to watch them going from not liking dogs to bonding with one. That journey was very wholesome. 4mo

Attempting some Halloween spooky reading. It's actually kind of cool reading this after being in Svalbard this year, which is where this book is set.

Read this book in Swedish. it is interesting when you also live north (not as far as the arctic though) to read about the perception of darkness, fear and needs of humans.
It is a well written ghost story. Perfect for dark winter nights.

I was going to tag Timothy Snyder's The Road to Unfreedom, but I went with the Gothic ghost story.

1. I was staying in a Victorian house in New Orleans. Before I went to sleep, I put my glasses on the nightstand, but when I woke up, I couldn't find them. After looking all over, I spotted them on the bed, right where I'd been lying. Either a ghost or I'd had too much to drink the night before.

2. Masks.

#ThankfulThursday @Cosmos_Moon

Cosmos_Moon_River 😂 as a resident of New Orleans, I think both having too much to drink and a ghost moving them are possible. 4y

A compelling and well written piece, part ghost story, part speculative horror and part existential crisis. A character piece focussing on isolation and terror that was surprisingly relaxing to read.

Paver's book is intelligent and intriguing in equal measures, a solid choice regardless of what you normally read.

Mistermandolin Paver is a fine writer. This one‘s a slow burn but rewarding at the same time. I loved the sense of isolation and mounting dread. Some novels just stay with you and this one has with me. Great pick. 5y
CJRwriting Totally agree. I was recommended it by a friend who is often on the money with these things. But he certainly hit a home run with this one. 5y

Mistermandolin It‘s more a winter read but you‘re right: the tension is palpable and I couldn‘t put it down. Paver is a fine writer and this is a terrific novel. Eerie, claustrophobic and very atmospheric. A slow burn but all the better for that. Great pick! 5y

I finally finished a book! I‘ve had a very hard time concentrating during this quarantine so I had my daughter go to my bookshelves and pick out a book. Not wanting to disappoint her, I knew I‘d finish anything she selected. But she picked well- this was a ghost story that takes place in the Arctic during the endless night of winter. This book surprised me, and it‘s one I could imagine picking up again.

Caroline2 I really liked this book too. 👍 5y

I really loved this beautiful, terrifying little book! It's an amazing description of the landscape and wildlife of Svalbard, as well as a superbly creepy tale of the effects of the Arctic winter on the human psyche. It's also, as the subtitle says, an excellent ghost story! The atmosphere and growing sense of unease linger in your mind as you read, and long afterwards. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Horror as a genre is not something I‘ve read very often, so I think I may have expected too much from this in the “terrifying” category. However, it was a good read. I liked the diary entry format and enjoyed the descriptions of the artic (a place that fascinates me). And Isaak ❤️🐶

This was a slow burner horror but boy, when it got going it was full of a menacing dread that won‘t let go. I‘ve always thought I‘d make a good hermit, as long as I had all my books & music but being a hermit in the arctic is another animal entirely. Especially if you have the misfortune of being left in a bay haunted by a seriously pissed off ghost! #ReadHarder2019 #AnEpistolaryNovel #Pop19 #SetInScandinavia #SomethingWickedFall

Tamra I really enjoyed this one and has stuck with me. I didn‘t necessarily care for the end. A little too fantastical. Sometimes I think it‘s better to leave things lie with the imagination. 6y
ephemeralwaltz @Tamra that's great! I felt like the creepy factor didn't really start until page 200 and by then I was frustrated with the plot. Creepy little ghost story for All Hallows‘ Read. I‘m glad I read this on a bright autumn day and not a cold, dark winter‘s night! Cold and dark are like characters in this book. I LOVE this book. It terrified me, it‘s creepy, full of suspense & cleverly written. It‘s about being alone & knowing you‘re not; that feeling of something watching you from out in the darkness. Paver has an extraordinary talent of putting fear into words. I found myself constantly wondering when the scare would come. I don‘t think I‘d read this at night, I‘d definitely have to double check all the doors and windows before I went to bed if I did!

So not even 20 pages ago I'm thinking to myself "pssh this book isn't really that scary so far. I wonder if it's going to pick up". I'm sitting outside in broad daylight, it is not what I would call quiet out here as there is a busy parking lot on the other side of the trees and someone's cell phone goes off. I could not have jumped higher if someone had snuck up behind me and grabbed my shoulders. So yes Danielle. It does pick up.
