A Dowry of Blood | S. T. Gibson
post image

A Dowry of Blood was my favorite October read, but I'll be surprised if it doesn't come down to The Stars Too Fondly and Sorcery and Small Magics for my top read of the year. Considering I've already picked one for Book Riot's Best Books of 2024 (you'll just have to wait and see which), that's probably pretty telling 😅 But you never know, there are 2 months and many good books left that could surprise me.

October: THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR
This will be fun to put together at the end of the year! 🤩

kspenmoll Can you explain to me how the brackets off each month etc works? 🤪 3w
dabbe @kspenmoll I'll try! The far left and right columns are for your favorite book of each month. For ex., for January (upper left), my fave book was A STUDY IN SCARLET. As you fill in the months, once you have two months down (like Jan and March in the left column), you then have to pick your favorite from just those two; for me, BABEL won out over SCARLET. ⬇️ (edited) 3w
dabbe @kspenmoll ... Then, you just keep following the brackets, picking your top choice of the two until your #1 is chosen for the entire year. Does that make sense? 😝🤪😛 3w

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy was my only five star read of the month, so an easy pick for October. Unfortunately, I think Anxious People beats it out to the semi-final spot.

CSeydel Looking good! 3w
rachelsbrittain I feel like I can't even be mad about this since I'm the one that recommended Anxious People to you in the first place 😅 3w
sebrittainclark @rachelsbrittain There's a very good chance that the final showdown will be books you recommend to me. 3w

It's almost the end of the month, so it's time for another installment of my #2024bookbracket. I accomplished a lot more reading in October compared to September. Both Sep/Oct were tough to compare as well as the bonuses as they are completely different books but I managed to make my picks with careful consideration.

Only two more months!

Gravity Lost: A Novel | L. M. Sagas

I technically rated How to Talk so Little Kids Will Listen higher than Gravity Lost, but since this has ended up being an entirely fiction board, I think I'll stick with that theme (and maybe create a second non-fiction bracket for myself)

Connie Willis can be a little wordy, I admit, and there are times that what starts as running gag can start to feel a little dragged-out. But these are minor complaints in an overall well-written, cleverly plotted, ingeniously imagined scifi/historical fiction/romance/humor - let‘s just say, GENRE DEFYING - novel.

BkClubCare Yay!! I admit, this is a book I keep thinking about but then, nope …. Then I think about it again! One of these days, I *WILL* read it 🤣 2mo
CatLass007 I love her short stories. I have this series in my Audible library and it‘s been calling my name for ages. 2mo
CSeydel @BkClubCare @CatLass007 I just love her Oxford Time Travel characters! 2mo
CatLass007 I read a short story in either Analog magazine or Isaac Asimov‘s Science Fiction magazine years and years ago in that universe. Wonderful. 2mo

August: THE GOD IN THE WOODS
September: THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA

I've decided for the rest of the year that I'm not going to include rereads (so no Shardlake or Sherlock) in order to give the other books a chance. 😂
