Sundial
Sundial | Catriona Ward
Sundial is a new, twisty psychological horror novel from Catriona Ward, author of The Last House on Needless Street. The new face of literary dark fiction. Sarah Pinborough, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes You can't escape what's in your blood... All Rob wanted was a normal life. She almost got it, too: a husband, two kids, a nice house in the suburbs. Far from her childhood home, Sundial, hidden deep in the wild Mojave Desert. But beneath the veneer, Rob is terrified for her oldest daughter, Callie, who collects tiny bones and whispers to imaginary friends. Rob sees a darkness in Callie, one that reminds her too much of the family she left behind. Running from her past has led her directly back to it -- whats buried at Sundial could never stay a secret forever, and Rob must risk one last trip out there to protect her family, and her future. A true nerve-shredder that keeps its mind-blowing secrets to the very end. Stephen King on The Last House on Needless Street At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I finished this six months ago but it still creeps up on me out of nowhere. Short term impact I had a couple of jumpy moments around our two dogs. Longer term, I‘m looking at people and feeling like I can dee the roadmap of scars that got them to the present, while having absolutely no concept of scale or quality. Messed me up.

I didn't care for the experimenting on dog parts (and skimmed over them), but other than that it was a great piece of storytelling that hooked me from the start, had some twists and was a quick read.
DISCLAIMER....the abusive relationship is difficult to read at times.

Reggie That relationship was the real horror in here. 12mo

I am so glad I joined in #LittenListen I just got into audiobooks over the last 12 months and have not looked back. It's a great way to whittle thru the tbr while busy with other tasks.
Outstanding listens were The Little Snake, Geneva, Mother Daughter murder night, The Devil and Harper Lee and The magic of mushrooms. The tagged was a favourite

IndoorDame It really is great! I maintain that the dishes in my house would never get washed if it weren‘t for audiobooks 😆 13mo

Stephen King described this book as "authentically terrifying," and he was not kidding. Rob, an unhappily married mother of two daughters, fears her oldest, Callie, may be dangerous. Her fears are rooted not just in Callie's unnerving behavior, but also in Rob's own past. She takes Callie back to her childhood home, Sundial, to end the danger once and for all. Chilling, riveting and deeply disturbing, this was an unforgettable horror story.

Yuki_Onna @BeeMagical It is!!! It was creepy and disgusting and moving and terrifying. It made me want to hit certain characters so hard and had me bawling my eyes out at the end. And if you like deserts (as I do) - the Mojave setting was so *chef's kiss*!!!

A weird & creepy read, but one that ended up just okay. I disliked the protagonist's attitude toward her daughter from the start. Dark & weird, playing with boundaries of reality & left me confused several times...in a good way. Definitely disturbing & had times when I was absolutely interested & intrigued, but then the plot would take a tangent or return to the oddly inserted book with in a book & I would be back to not caring. Frustrating.

Sundial by Catriona Ward is a tale that pushes the question, “How far would you go for those that you love?” to the most extreme limit. Filled with family dysfunction, scientific testing, and love, this story will take readers on quite a dark trip!

Sundial is a must read for fans of stories with really twisted and dark dysfunctional families.

5 beautiful amazing stars for this masterpiece. Very slow build that has you wondering where it‘s going for a big part of the journey. However, once the pieces start to fall in place it‘s a one two punch in the gut. Quite possibly a contender for one of my all time faves.

Wow, this was rough but very engaging! I couldn't stop listening and went back and forth on liking and hating Rob. But in the end, I liked her despite all her faults and I guess that's the point of the book.

Sundial sounds like it was probably pretty cool in its heyday, sans the dog experiments I mean.

night_shift TW below. 2y
night_shift Child abuse, spousal abuse, animal cruelty/experimentation/death, blood, needles (at least once in a pretty gross way 👁) 2y
DGRachel Thanks for the TW. I bailed early on, but left it on my “maybe later” shelf. With the animal cruelty/experimentation, I definitely won‘t try again. 2y
night_shift @DGRachel yeah, no problem! It's definately a little rough at times, so that's understandable! 2y

HeathHof Wow! These all sound good. My top two would probably be Sundial and Chasing the Boogey Man but I would be down with any of these. 2y
Maggie4483 Yeah, definitely just stacked all of those. My vote would go to The Girl with a Clock for a Heart or Chasing the Boogey Man (but, like @HeathHof I‘d be happy with any of them). 2y

🎧 The Last House on Needless Street meets … dogs 😢

Psychological thriller. At one point I thought … is this an unreliable narrator? LOL it was good & weird & had a satisfying ending.

There‘s trigger warnings, this is a horror story. Read at your own risk.

I LOVED Needless Street but was underwhelmed by this one. That's not to say it's bad, I just didn't find it as engaging, but I was invested enough into the story that I wanted answers!
I didn't find this tale about a dysfunctional family particularly scary, but rather disturbing and quite gross (Maggots!). The fictional story within the story seemed unnecessary and the cliffhanger ending was annoying. Trigger warnings for child/animal abuse.

Oh reading slumps, how I loathe thee. I had a digital ARC of this through NetGalley but didn‘t get to it before pub date so I got the audiobook from my library. I was really excited for it. 2% of the way into a 13 hour audiobook and I hate all of the characters and am bailing. 😭😭😭 I know it‘s because I‘m super grumpy but now I‘m also super sad. Maybe I‘ll go see if the library has any fluffy audiobooks available now

My first thought when I finished this was, "Holy crap that was disturbing, but so good."

This book took a turn I wasn't expecting at all, but it was such a wild ride that messed with my head in all the ways I love a good psychological horror book to.

Ward delivers a great story with some truly great characters. I will be looking for more books by this author now.

This has been such a weird reading month…I‘m either loving books or DNFing them (which is new for me…I‘ve never really DNF‘d books before). I really enjoyed The House on Needless Street and was so excited for this one. But I‘ve made it halfway through and find myself making myself keep reading. I‘m sure there are big twists just around the corner but I‘m not in the mood for waiting anymore. Maybe I‘ll give this one a shot at another time 🤷🏼‍♀️

SUNDIAL by Catiorina Ward

When Rob discovers her young daughter Callie has homicidal urges, she takes her to Sundial, the private estate in the desert where Rob grew up. There Rob tells Callie her life story—and how they may have more in common than Callie realizes . . .

Bluntly put, this a powerful, heartbreaking story. It reads in such a way that you feel like you know what‘s to come—which makes all the twists & turns that much more impactful.

I enjoyed this much more than The Last House on Needless Street.

A book about the monsters that live inside us. A book about family and the sins of the past. Can someone be “born bad”? And can you fix them? Just when you think you know what‘s going on, new information comes out that changes everything. I loved discovering the truth with Rob and Callie.

The Arrowood book inside the book was unnecessary and a bit boring.

stretchkev I might have to try this one, the descriptions of both this and the last house on needle street sell them of me, but have heard good things about sundail.
