Re-reading for my bookclub. Still think this OwlCrate edition is absolutely gorgeous! My favorite parts are the foiled endpapers and glow in the dark dust jacket.
Definitely more about the vibes than the story itself. It seems to go out of its way to tick off all the YA tropes. And while it repeatedly reminds you that things are high stakes the MC seems so flippant that it loses any tension. The events leading up to the ending came about very conveniently.
My household was already staying in this weekend because my boyfriend has eye surgery on Tuesday & Covid is back around here & we will all go insane if the surgery got pushed. But I will take any added excuse ❄️❄️❄️
First real snowstorm this season.
This part of the package felt like my very own #staycation in Puerto Rico. I love it so much!!!
I read this together with a friend, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with this book. It looks nice, but the plot didn't interest me in the slightest. I guess many fantasy books have lost their magic for me.
It still was an ok read. The Belle Époque flair is lovely and fresh, so I think this would make a wonderful movie. The characters were rather flat and boring to me, but the romance isn't dominating, kudos for that 😅
Lush and magical little YA that made me happy I lifted my YA moratorium! There‘s romance, but it‘s light, and the plot revolves more around the relationship between two sisters.
I see there‘s an owl crate for this book, which could be fun given the imagery that comes with a magical, traveling hotel that is not what it seems. Performers! Girls turned to birds! Strikingly beautiful young men and women!
Finished my #bookspin. It‘s going on the keeper shelf because I‘ll probably reread it at some point, as I liked the fantasy aspect and I rushed through it this time, but I may be getting too old for these YA/teen books.
I have nieces the ages of Jani and Zosa, and I kept thinking: that‘s a little young to be on their own.
Also, the switchblade finger? What was that? (Not sexy.) Ok, rant over.

Do you ever have a book that you think is super pretty so you put it off because you are afraid the story won't be as good as the cover?? This one has been on my shelf for a year and I think it's so gorgeous!! But it has been a #TrappedonanIsland pick for multiple months, including this one, so I decided to finally take the plunge. While it wasn't the best fantasy I have ever read, I did enjoy it. I liked the narrator & while the world-building⬇️
I really enjoyed this book. It is one that I knew very little about before deciding to read it and that is something I‘m glad for. I enjoyed the storyline and the way it was written, something that immediately got me invested. I also feel that the characters are relatable and so very lovable. I loved the character interactions because they felt so real and it really made me fall for the friendships and the love story. I loved it! 4⭐️
“I want to work with you.” His fingers threaded mine. “Alongside you.”
“Incredible,” Bel said. “Someone finally freed Issig.”
“Must have been a foolish soup girl.”
Do you remember me?
He winced and reached for a lock of my hair that hung in a tangle next to his cheek, marveling at it. His mouth curved in a half smile.
“I‘ve never seen you with your hair down,” he said, his throat rough. “It‘s…nice.”
“I didn‘t think I could do anything to change it.” He fixed his attention on me. “Then I realized a kitchen maid was braver than me, and frankly, it pissed me off.”
“Haven‘t heard? We‘re in Champilliers.”
“You should leave,” he repeated.
“You‘re probably right,” I said, and pressed my lips to his.
“I‘ve been thinking…”
Bel eyed me, skeptical. “I‘m not going to like this, am I?”
“You‘re not nothing to me,” he said, almost to himself. “That‘s precisely the problem.”
“Don‘t you get it? Home doesn‘t mean anything to me without the people I love.”
“For god‘s sake. I‘m not going to murder you.”
“You‘re so reassuring.”
“How can I trust you?” He could easily be lying.
“I‘m extremely trustworthy.”
“Are you always this irritatingly persistent?”
“For you, always.” Feeling emboldened, I flashed my teeth. “Will you take me?”
“Are you trying to have no fun?”
“I made it a rule to never have fun until after lunch.”
This one has fairly mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it. I thought the idea was great & the writing has the kind of descriptive detail where you are drawn into that world, although many of the supporting characters, including Bel, aren't really fleshed out. The main issue I found though was the main character - how to describe her... (Continued in comments)
What an imagination, so good so far!
I had really high hopes for this after all the hype on Booktok, but it ended up being only okay. The premis was very interesting and it gave "Howl's Moving Castle" but evil hotel vibes, however the execution was really lackluster. I didnt feel connected to the characters and sometimes even forgot who was who. The plot felt rushed and the magic system felt both vague and convoluted. I did enjoy the ending and the last 1/4 of the book!
I was absolutely immersed throughout the entirety of Hotel Magnifique! There is an element of mystery that really added a lot to the story and made the plot flow really well. On top of that, while the major events in the novel were a little predictable, I found most of the book unique. The found family trope was great, but I would have liked to see how it could have developed across more books. Overall, I absolutely loved Hotel Magnifique!
This is such a great novel. The story is original and captivating, making this novel a real page-turner that many people can take pleasure in reading. I enjoyed the characters, especially Jani. She is such a tough, determined and loyal individual and she drew me easily into her story. Taylor‘s descriptions and word choices are extremely effective at painting a picture of Hotel Magnifique, the places it travels to, and the people inhabiting it.

I just finished reading Hotel Magnifique by Emily J Taylor. This book is about a magical hotel that only comes around once and a while. In it Jani discovers the disturbing secrets of "Hotel Magnifique." I chose to read this book by discovering it on Bookishfirst. I loved the cover it caught my attention it's so pretty so I decided to read the description and look it up on Booktok. I'm glad I did I loved it it's a wonderful interesting story.
Hotel Magnifique was a fun, fast read. I enjoyed the fantastical descriptions of the guest rooms, lobby and entertainment. The glamour that masks the rot beneath is well done, and the story unfolds in an intriguing way. The relationship between Bel and Jani was full of banter and attraction, and the sisterly love between Jani and Zola was sweet. I can see why it‘s been compared to Caraval… it does have a similar vibe.
Just started this one and loving it so far! I have a thing for magical houses and hotels. 🥰 Plus, the OwlCrate edition glows in the dark… how cool is that?!
Sometimes magic isn't what you think it is. This YA Dark Fantasy in the magical realm leads us to a mysterious hotel that can come and go as it pleases. This is a dark magical novel that is lush, extravagant and richly detailed. The world building was well done and the fast pace of the storyline kept the pages turning. I can see why some are comparing this to the Night Circus and Caraval. I would add in a dash of Howl's Moving Castle!
This one is reminding me a lot of Caraval - and I‘m not sure that‘s a good thing? 🤔

I got this book the moment I saw that it was compared to “The Night Circus” & “Caraval”, as those are two of my all-tune favorite books. While I‘m not completely floored by it as I was the other two; it‘s still an astounding book and totally worth the read. The setting is very intriguing, and I especially loved the characters, who thankfully had a lot more layers & realism to them than is found in most YA fantasy.
4 ⭐ Not what I was expecting, but better than I hoped. The best way to describe Hotel Manifique is a cross between Caraval and Gunslinger Girl, however, it ends better, and doesn‘t leave you going, “that‘s it”. Jani is a big sister trying to make a better life for everyone. Upon seeing that the Hotel Manifique is hiring, she knows that is exactly where she and Zosa need to be. They can earn enough money in a year to live move back to the

Hotel Magnifique is a stunning original YA fantasy that will have you dreaming of French ballrooms and magic. The story revolves around Jani, whose sister is chosen to work for the Hotel Magnifique, which magically transports itself to a different destination every day. Although Jani is not chosen, she bargains with the handsome doorman, and he allows her in on a trial basis...
Very exotic and fantastical! I didn‘t like the MC at first (a little whiny, asks lots of questions and blunders about). Yet, apparently that strategy combined with some great magic manages to save the day. The ending was a little convenient, but the author pulls it off ok. A nice foray into YA fantasy and she resisted the temptation to make it into a series. I‘ll look forward to more books by this author!
What are the odds!? My next YA pick today matches my current outfit perfectly! Who knew 😂
