This was my #DoubleSpin for this month, and WOW was it intense! It was incredibly disturbing and most of the time I didn't want to put it down as the main character became more and more unhinged. As with most of the books Jenny Lawson has picked for her Fantastic Strangelings book club, I was left wondering what I had just read, but in a good way.

Well this one was a real challenge. Had to do some proper research.

I really enjoyed my August #doublespin & got some Otessa Moshfegh vibes: a main character who‘s kind of unlikeable…who‘s also going through some “stuff.” ~~~
Mrs. March is living her best life until an off-handed comment from a neighbor shop owner leaves Mrs. March paranoid and suspicious of just about everyone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

She . . . pulled off her kidskin gloves. A Christmas gift from George two years earlier, they were a very distinct color for gloves: a sort of mint green. She would never have picked that color out, not once believing she could pull such a thing off, but she thrilled at the fantasy that strangers . . . would assume her to be the kind of carefree, confident woman who would have selected such a bold color for herself.

Finally can access the litsy app again after months of not being able to. Read this while on vacation last week and really enjoyed it. It's an interesting psychological suspense novel and hard to tell what is real and what isn't in the main characters head at times.

Qualified pick. Began like gangbusters; like Ottessa Moshfegh was reimagining Mrs. Bridge. It was a fascinating look at a woman‘s unraveling, but the time in which this story was set was weirdly elastic and the characters were oddly opaque. Still, I liked this odd story.

Strange, unsettling. Is it a suspenseful thriller or an account of a woman becoming unhinged? Kept me listening to see what would happen but I‘m this wasn‘t the most effective use of an unreliable narrator. And the MC was quite annoying so it was difficult for me to empathize with her. #Bookspin #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

It is hard to be immersed in such a character driven story when you don't like the character at all. I finished it based on curiousity into the lifestyle at that time and to the credit of the writing that lured me on even if it didn't engross me.

Began with potential, turned big disappointment. I should have quit when I wanted to but was hoping it would get better. It didn‘t and I regret wasting the weekend on it

… I don‘t think I quite get the point of this novel. I don‘t want to spoil anything but I‘ll put my comments with the spoiler tag for anyone who‘s read it and wants to weigh in. But yeah, I was underwhelmed.

Hades and I do not understand the love for this book. In my #unpopularopinion this book is overhyped. As another Litten said, what was the point? I knew the end was coming but there are way too many loose ends for me and the whole book itself was too vague. This was just not for me.
I do think, however, that it will make a great movie with Elisabeth Moss.

Mrs. March was supposed to be my last book of 2021, but I accidentally left it at my sister‘s in Virginia (I live in NY) last week. I‘ll get it back in three weeks when we go on vacation together.
So….The Death of Mrs. Westaway will be my #lastfirst book of 2021/2022.

5⭐️ thanks to @mklong for this great #jolabokaflod read! I don‘t want to say too much as this is one you just need to flow along with. I will say that the writing is precise, descriptive and not overdone. A gem of a novel and quite an ending!

Reviews described this novel as Hitchcockian, but I wasn‘t prepared for all of the references to Hitchcock‘s films. I adore those films, and catching the allusions was delightful. This isn‘t so much a thriller as a psychological suspense novel. Mrs. March living in her luxurious apartment in Manhattan is fascinating. I couldn‘t quite pin down the time period, but the sense of place is elegantly created. Loved it!

You guessed correctly with the Ferrante; I really liked the first book in the Neapolitan Quartet but told myself I wouldn‘t buy this one until I‘d read more of that series. 🤣 I‘m so looking forward to Mrs March and A Kiss Before Dying and I love the Irish chocolate and pretty card and pen, too.

Ay,caramba! What the heck did I just read? I blame her for slowing my reading down last week. It took me 8 days to finish this small book. I realize now that it was because Mrs. March kinda repulsed me. I didn‘t want to be inside her head. But the last third I read all through the night. ⬇️

10-18-21: My 103rd finished book of 2021! Mrs. March‘s husband, George, has a new bestselling book. Some say the main character must be based on Mrs. March, but she can‘t believe this is true. This starts Mrs. March down a neurotic path. She isn‘t sure she knows her husband at all. Now, she has to figure out what is real and what is imaginary and who she can trust. It‘s a new week with a new book! I‘ve been on the library‘s hold list for what seemed like forever! Glad it‘s in pristine condition. #currentlyreading

If Mrs. Dalloway and Alfred Hitchcock had a baby, it would be Mrs. March. What a wild ride! I stayed up half the night to finish this one and was not disappointed.

The Shirley Jackson vibes are definitely here! This story of a mad housewife is unsettling. Prim and proper upper class Mrs. March is unnerved when it is suggested that the prostitute main character in her husband‘s new novel is based on her. But Feito slowly reveals that things haven‘t been right with Mrs March for a long, long time...

I‘m using this creepy novel for the category “book with green on cover” for #RoaringWolf Ominous October.

This had some parts in common with Yellow Wallpaper and other mad woman stories. But it is hard to say. Mrs March and others in the story seem unreliable if not just untruthful. No one seems to be better for their relationship with Mrs. March. I look forward to seeing this adaptation.

I pitched this one up when I saw it had been picked up for adaptation. But, unfortunately, I didn‘t see the appeal. A very unlikeable narrator (which is often a dealbreaker for me). I kept reading to see if there would be redemption or justice, but, nope

This book seems to be a character study of an eye-wateringly self-absorbed woman who has some unnamed neurologic or psychiatric problem that is worsening. But I just don‘t really get the point of it. Plus, there were timeline errors I found very distracting. I think if it were written a bit differently I would have liked it.

Yawn.

The ending had better be worth the time I‘ve … (wasted is too harsh a word) spent on this thus far. If you have a mental illness, reading about it as a plot is either triggering or just plain boring. I‘m bored. Can we get in with SOMETHING, please? 🙄

This was pretty great! Super unsettling, loved the writing/setting/attention to weird details. (I share with Mrs. March an obsession with olive bread, loved how much it was referenced! There‘s also a bit about The Lawrence Welk Show near the end that spoke to my soul bc I watched so many reruns of that as a kid with my older parents; the way it was used in this book slayed me.) Great on audio, too - just the slump-buster I needed this week!

Trying to finish the last hundred pages before the #fantasticstrangelings event with the author. I honestly have no idea what I think about this book yet, but I definitely want to see how this ends!

I loved. everything about Mrs March. except the end. It wasn‘t bad…. Just a bit of a letdown for me. Still, strongly recommend. A “what am I reading?!” in the very best way.

Ya know, “Paranoia, paranoia, everybody‘s coming to get me …” ⬅️ That‘s Mrs. March once she hears a rumor that the horrid main character in her husband‘s popular novel is based on *gasp* HER. A dark, oddly fun story with damned good writing. Impressive debut!

Since I met my Goodreads goal early, I decided to read 12 #BOTM #bookofthemonth books — I wanted to see what my resistance was, if I could 😜 (I suspect it has something to do with my lifelong resistance to reading-what-I‘m-told yo read 🤭). I‘m 5 books into that… but when this book arrived from #FantasticStrangelings #fantasticstrangelingsbookclub yesterday, I simply couldn‘t resist. Loving it so far…..

My copy of this month‘s #FantasticStrangelings book just arrived. This is a book I don‘t think I would have chosen on my own, so I‘m interested to see what it‘s like.

I always wonder what makes a book cover artist decide to make a new cover look worn/torn/dirty. I wonder if that will fit the story?
