Cheesy but sweet, this book follows a very predictable plot of big city girl (Mel) heads to a tiny town to be its midwife and falls in love. Add in some grief because she is a young widow and you‘ve got the story. I liked the supporting cast members, the cook/fellow ex-marine at the restaurant, the old curmudgeon doctor, the new friends she makes in the community, etc. Definitely entertaining though I don‘t think I‘ll continue the series.

Even better than the Netflix series (though it‘s amazing how close they stuck to it). Mel moves to Virgin River as the new Nurse Practitioner/Midwife as a way to escape the tragedy of her life in the big city. She‘s amazed to find life still challenging but also healing…and, of course, it‘s a love story.

marleed I loved led the book better too! 2y

Book 1 of the Virgin River series and it was good! A little cringey for a few parts (mostly dealing with Lizzie, I mean she‘s 14y/o I think that was a bit unnecessary). But other than that, it did follow closely with the show, which was nice. I will continue with the series as I wait for the next season to release!

This series was not on my radar until I binge-watched the Netflix series in the early days of the Covid lockdown. Discovering characters adapted to screen seldom impedes me from enjoying the book later, so I wanted to at least read the first book to decide if the adaption has similar vibes to the book. Significant differences but similar vibe! ↓

marleed Since this book is 15 years old, I thought it would be a fun to hunt down a thrifted copy. It‘s taken me over a year, but for 69¢ I finally own a little mass market copy. I think I might have been embarrassed had any shoppers witnessed the excitement on my face when I found this little well-read copy. But it‘s these little things I know Littens will understand! 2y

I thought I‘d see what all the hype was about. I haven‘t watched it on Netflix either.
I loved the first book. A recently widowed nurse/midwife (Mel) makes a bold move from LA to Virgin River. The community take her in with open arms. Mel is particularly drawn to a former U.S marine (Jack) who owns the local bar.
A beautiful backdrop with a range of great characters,
Carr‘s writing style is light, cosy and in some ways captivating.

wanderinglynn I watched the show first (not realizing at the time it was a book series). Then I went back and read book 1. I liked both. But I will tell you the show does not completely follow the book. They hollywooded it up, if that makes sense. Similar with what happened with the show True Blood and Charlaine Harris‘s Sookie Stackhouse series 4y
Cupcake12 @wanderinglynn I thought I‘d read them all first then watch the show after x 4y

I was recommended this book and I'm having a really hard time trying to finish it. I can't really relate to the main characters even though they're supposed to be around my age because they use words like "fanny" and have some "clutch your pearls" moments at things that I feel aren't that shocking....maybe meant for more of an older audience.

I watched this series with a friend recently and she encouraged me to try the books, knowing of course that it's not my usual read.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed the Netflix show more than this first book. I liked the character development more in the show. The book was a quick, lighthearted read that was a nice escape from heavier reads though.

Not sure yet if I'll try another in the series.

In prep for the Netflix series my knitting gang is watching, I decided to read first. It fit in perfectly with my easy breezy December reading docket and I am delighted to see it is a series, when I find a community I‘d like to visit, I like to keep coming back. The characters are decent, likable people and the story is enjoyable but predictable. It has a few steamy parts which I do not mind but it‘s good to know if you do.

Marni The good news is the book and show are different enough to keep you guessing and also both are delightful 4y

The Netflix series brought this book to my attention. There are differences between the book and show, the show having more drama. The book is very small town, everybody knows everyone and everything but quite charming at the same time. Literally think Heart of Dixie but with older characters and set in the remote mountains.

I loved this book. I did first watch the show, so of course I had to get the book. the books were million times better. Jack and Mel relationship was far more intense and done right. Jack did the right thing by breaking off his so called relationship with Charmaine the moment he met Mel. If before starting anything. Mel‘s life in LA was not as dramatic. Yes, her husband died but no she not have stillborn.

I watched the Netflix adaptation before I knew it was a book, then had to go read the book. And, as expected, I like the book better. The book is a sweet romance and not as overdramatized as the show. Although one thing the show has going for it is Hope‘s character, who is barely in the book (at least this first book).

Tonidreads328 I loved the show, and watched it before I realized it was based on a book. After your review, I must read the book. 4y

I ended up listening to most of this book because I couldn‘t stand to put it down. I enjoyed it so much-the setting, the characters, the tiny little town. My favorite part is that the main character is a nurse midwife. I appreciated the real situations depicted in here and felt like nursing was represented well. When I work outside of my house, I‘m a labor and delivery RN so this meant a lot to me. Onto the Netflix series!

intothehallofbooks Sidenote: there were several incorrect pronunciations that drove me crazy, but I chose to overlook them in order to keep going with the story😜 4y
TEArificbooks Just like the books, the show focuses on book 1 but hints at book 2 and 3. All her books do that, focuses on one love story but introduces you to new characters hinting at their romance in future books and she updates you on the other couples you have already read about. Love the series. The tv show does it justice. 4y
intothehallofbooks @mdm139 Should I read books 2 and 3 before watching the show? 4y
See All 6 Comments
TEArificbooks @intothehallofbooks not required but it would be less suspenseful on some of the subplots because you will know what is going on with the side characters. Book 2 is about Preacher for example. If you read the book, when you see the storyline in the show be introduced you will be less worried about his situation he is getting into. Same with another character. So it is up to you, do you want to know or do you like a little “what is happening there” 4y
intothehallofbooks @mdm139 Gotcha!! I think I‘ll go ahead and read them before watching. I love how her series fold the previous characters into each successive book. I‘ve read several other books by Robyn Carr and she‘s one of my favorites!! I loved the Thunder Point series. 4y
TEArificbooks @intothehallofbooks yes! The thunder point series was my first books from her too. When she finished that series I started Virgin River, about half way through the series now. She is so good with world building these little towns and I love how she updates us on the old characters. I like knowing what happened after their book was done. 4y

This was a solid 3.5 for me. I think I spoiled it a bit by watching the Netflix adaptation before reading the book. I did enjoy both, but usually prefer to read the book.

The story didn't feel like it went deeply into many of the characters other than the protagonist's, but I did appreciate Mel's love of her job/calling as an NP and midwife. Happy year of the nurse and midwife!

Not a fan of this one. I thought Mel was annoying and not the tough woman they were playing her to be. I felt like we didn‘t really get to see the relationship between Mel and Jack grow before they were sleeping together. An adult conversation between the two of them would have been nice. Some of the lines were eye-rolllingly cheesy. Package it up as a 2 hr TV movie and I‘m all in, but a book that I‘m gonna invest time in reading? No thanks.

Prairiegirl_reading But they didn‘t make a 2 hour movie, they made a series. I haven‘t read the book but I did watch the show and I have to agree with your points here. 5y
GloVerdino @Prairiegirl_reading I haven‘t watched the series yet but I plan to. I‘m just saying I can see how this would work well as a Hallmark-type movie but I‘m not interested in investing the time to read it 5y

The Netflix series was good, so I thought I'd try this. The books are way better, I'm up to #7 in the series, thanks to Libby. They're quick and easy reads and very good escapes. I usually avoid books in the romance category, but I admit I'm enjoying this series. I date a veteran, and I appreciate that there are quite a few veterans in these stories.
