I prefer the books to the tv show (there is a little too much drama in the show for my liking) but both are still enjoyable

Cheesy but sweet, this book follows a very predictable plot of big city girl (Mel) heads to a tiny town to be its midwife and falls in love. Add in some grief because she is a young widow and you‘ve got the story. I liked the supporting cast members, the cook/fellow ex-marine at the restaurant, the old curmudgeon doctor, the new friends she makes in the community, etc. Definitely entertaining though I don‘t think I‘ll continue the series.
Even better than the Netflix series (though it‘s amazing how close they stuck to it). Mel moves to Virgin River as the new Nurse Practitioner/Midwife as a way to escape the tragedy of her life in the big city. She‘s amazed to find life still challenging but also healing…and, of course, it‘s a love story.
Book 1 of the Virgin River series and it was good! A little cringey for a few parts (mostly dealing with Lizzie, I mean she‘s 14y/o I think that was a bit unnecessary). But other than that, it did follow closely with the show, which was nice. I will continue with the series as I wait for the next season to release!
This series was not on my radar until I binge-watched the Netflix series in the early days of the Covid lockdown. Discovering characters adapted to screen seldom impedes me from enjoying the book later, so I wanted to at least read the first book to decide if the adaption has similar vibes to the book. Significant differences but similar vibe! ↓
All of the Virgin River books take place #InTheMountains 🏔 The tv show does too but the books are better 🤪

Honestly, I like the show better. Mel is unbearably rude and annoying. The writing from the male POV is so cringey at times. Just not for me.
A perfectly pleasant little romance. Not really my thing.
I loved the Virgin River Netflix series so obviously I had to give the books a try. The books are even better than the show. #catsfortax #CatsOfLitsy #thetwins #WatsonandSherlock
I thought I‘d see what all the hype was about. I haven‘t watched it on Netflix either.
I loved the first book. A recently widowed nurse/midwife (Mel) makes a bold move from LA to Virgin River. The community take her in with open arms. Mel is particularly drawn to a former U.S marine (Jack) who owns the local bar.
A beautiful backdrop with a range of great characters,
Carr‘s writing style is light, cosy and in some ways captivating.

Book 2 finished. It‘s been a busy week with work, a trip to London and a funeral to attend.
The weather isn‘t looking good this weekend (☔️) so on to book 3.
Don‘t you just love the school run in the rain ☔️
I was recommended this book and I'm having a really hard time trying to finish it. I can't really relate to the main characters even though they're supposed to be around my age because they use words like "fanny" and have some "clutch your pearls" moments at things that I feel aren't that shocking....maybe meant for more of an older audience.
I watched this series with a friend recently and she encouraged me to try the books, knowing of course that it's not my usual read.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed the Netflix show more than this first book. I liked the character development more in the show. The book was a quick, lighthearted read that was a nice escape from heavier reads though.
Not sure yet if I'll try another in the series.

Anybody else watches this show? I am obsessed with the Netflix series. I'm caught up on both seasons and I can't wait for the third to come out. This is comfort watching at its best! ❤
Not bad, but probably won't continue the series. #bookspinbingo free space @TheAromaofBooks
Jan 2021 - Read before I watch / Romance - It was a Hallmark movie meets Harlequin romance in a book. I will suffer through like I suffered through the book. Hopefully the adaptation will be better.
In prep for the Netflix series my knitting gang is watching, I decided to read first. It fit in perfectly with my easy breezy December reading docket and I am delighted to see it is a series, when I find a community I‘d like to visit, I like to keep coming back. The characters are decent, likable people and the story is enjoyable but predictable. It has a few steamy parts which I do not mind but it‘s good to know if you do.
It was a good read a bit of cheesy escapism. I had heard about the Netflix show and the book was 99p on Amazon. I would read the next book in the series
😍
Turkey Sandwich and Virgin River season 2 while I wait for the lido patch to kick in. 2 days of waking up with a stiff neck and frozen shoulder drove me to it. I did work it out after about 6 hours at work yesterday but today it hurt so bad I was in tears. Not sure what‘s happening when I sleep these days but clearly nothing good.

The Netflix series brought this book to my attention. There are differences between the book and show, the show having more drama. The book is very small town, everybody knows everyone and everything but quite charming at the same time. Literally think Heart of Dixie but with older characters and set in the remote mountains.
I loved this book. I did first watch the show, so of course I had to get the book. the books were million times better. Jack and Mel relationship was far more intense and done right. Jack did the right thing by breaking off his so called relationship with Charmaine the moment he met Mel. If before starting anything. Mel‘s life in LA was not as dramatic. Yes, her husband died but no she not have stillborn.
It‘s totally ok to crawl into bed with your audio book at 6:30 on a Friday and ignore the world, right?

This was a great read. There was one minor story line that I did not like nor did I feel it needed to be included. Beyond that I was glad to find a great story that was different enough from the Netflix series that it kept me interested and guessing. Will be reading the next in the series!

Crochet + audiobooks is my favorite combination 🧶 📖
“Mel squinted into the rain and darkness, creeping along the narrow, twisting, muddy, tree-enshrouded road, and for the hundredth time thought, Am I out of my mind?”

As much as I love Jack in Netflix‘s Virgin River, as I‘m reading the book, Eric Dane fits the physical profile better. 😍😍😍
I watched the Netflix adaptation before I knew it was a book, then had to go read the book. And, as expected, I like the book better. The book is a sweet romance and not as overdramatized as the show. Although one thing the show has going for it is Hope‘s character, who is barely in the book (at least this first book).
I ended up listening to most of this book because I couldn‘t stand to put it down. I enjoyed it so much-the setting, the characters, the tiny little town. My favorite part is that the main character is a nurse midwife. I appreciated the real situations depicted in here and felt like nursing was represented well. When I work outside of my house, I‘m a labor and delivery RN so this meant a lot to me. Onto the Netflix series!
I‘ve been wanting to read this series for years. No better time than the present!!
I loved this book so much more than I thought I would! This series showed up on my radar when I found out there was going to be a Netflix series and I immediately put it on my TBR! I hate that‘s it‘s taken this long to get to it! I fell in love with the characters and Virgin River! I will definitely be reading the rest of the series! Now I can watch the show even though I know it won‘t live up to the book! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!
Another great romance book in the books! I loved it so much. The Netflix show is different enough that there were still surprises in the book. Definitely recommend even if you‘ve seen the Netflix show! #summerbingo #setnearwater
Hammock ✅ Romance book ✅ Nice breeze✅ Now all I need is a nice cold drink and my reading outside adventure will be complete #readoutside #summmerfun
This was a solid 3.5 for me. I think I spoiled it a bit by watching the Netflix adaptation before reading the book. I did enjoy both, but usually prefer to read the book.
The story didn't feel like it went deeply into many of the characters other than the protagonist's, but I did appreciate Mel's love of her job/calling as an NP and midwife. Happy year of the nurse and midwife!

So excited to finally start this series! My mom read them before it was a Netflix series and loved them. She actually introduced me to the show. Loved the show and have high hopes that the books will tide me over until the next season comes out!
Super excited to hear that there is going to be a new Virgin River book in a few months!

I love this series, and enjoyed the TV adaptation too. There's also going to be a season 2 as well not too far away hopefully
Not a fan of this one. I thought Mel was annoying and not the tough woman they were playing her to be. I felt like we didn‘t really get to see the relationship between Mel and Jack grow before they were sleeping together. An adult conversation between the two of them would have been nice. Some of the lines were eye-rolllingly cheesy. Package it up as a 2 hr TV movie and I‘m all in, but a book that I‘m gonna invest time in reading? No thanks.
Been hearing good things about this book's Netflix adaptation. So decided to read the book first. Solid, sweet read with a little romance and a chance to "escape" to a tiny mountain town.
Plus it is on sale for $1.99 on Amazon. ?

The Netflix series was good, so I thought I'd try this. The books are way better, I'm up to #7 in the series, thanks to Libby. They're quick and easy reads and very good escapes. I usually avoid books in the romance category, but I admit I'm enjoying this series. I date a veteran, and I appreciate that there are quite a few veterans in these stories.
