The Drafter
The Drafter | Kim Harrison
In the first explosive book in the Peri Reed Chronicles, Kim Harrison, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Hollows series, blazes a new frontier with an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run. Dont forgive and never forget has always been Peris creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote. When Peri discovers her name is on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. Her memory of the previous three years erased, she joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her fateful final task. Her motto has always been only to kill those who kill her first. But with nothing but intuition to guide her, will she have to break her own rule to survive?

I wanted to like it more than I did. The concept is so cool (certain people are born with the ability to draft, which is to redo the last minute or so of reality) but it just didn't pick up. Nothing they were doing felt terribly important considering the ability to CHANGE TIME was on the table. I'm on the fence about getting the sequel. Time will tell if I get the itch to find out what's going on in this world or not.

I finally finished it! I thought the world she built was actually pretty strong. There were definitely some trope-y and annoying parts though. I will probably eventually read the next one, just to find out what Peri decides to do. I did also like to see her grappling with essentially 2 different parts of herself toward the end. (I didn't read the prequel novella, and I'm glad I skipped it) @TheRomantiCate @BurghBookAddict @Wife

FINALLY making some progress with this book...and I don't hate it. I'm also not loving it. But I'm going to finish it, bc I do care about what is happening in the story. Sort of hopeful that I can finish it tonight, between work and class, and finally send it back! @TheRomantiCate @BurghBookAddict @Wife

TheRomantiCate I completely understand... I‘m having the same problem with The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon... I just CANNOT get into it... 6y
rjsthumbelina @TheRomantiCate I didn't finish Tom Gordon. It really triggers my anxiety when bad stuff happens to kids 6y
TheRomantiCate @rjsthumbelina yeah... I feel like I can see what‘s going to happen and it makes me very uneasy 😥 6y
rjsthumbelina Lol @TheRomantiCate which is exactly what King is doing, I guess. That's why he's a master of suspense. But I can't take it when it happens with little kids 6y
TheRomantiCate @rjsthumbelina yeah I know that 6y

Finished by the skin of my teeth to get it in the mail tomorrow... @laurenashley I apologize for the lateness!!
I give this one 🌟🌟🌟 because it‘s a good book but it‘s not great. It has good action and an intriguing plot... however, the book IMHO is about 200 pages too long, and most of the characters are insufferable, including Peri Reed. I don‘t wanna give any spoilers, I just hope that those after me, enjoy it more than me 😻😻

Ok so this is the book I choose for #genreswapPBC and I‘m feeling a tad overwhelmed... see, confession time: I don‘t keep a book journal while I read so I‘m not sure what I need to be noting... I feel like I should be filling a notebook with my thoughts on every paragraph, but that feels exhausting... and it‘s affecting my reading because I‘m too focused on what I should be noting... any tips for this novice noted?? #genrebending

Burghbookaddict I wrote directly in my book whenever I had a random thought, but I felt like I didnt really write enough either! I dont think theres any right or wrong way to do it, tho, so I would just do whatever you feel like 😊 6y
TheRomantiCate @laurenashley I see... perhaps that would be best...? 6y
Burghbookaddict Yeah I couldnt think of a good way to do it with a journal so thats the route I went 6y

TheRomantiCate @laurenashley I thought that I could keep it like a stream of thought deal, but that would take forever, and I‘ve fallen behind enough as it is... 6y
ElishaLovesBooks I would just annotate big ideas, things that seem shocking/ surprising, and any questions. Maybe also your opinions. (Can you tell I teach reading to middle schoolers?😉) I think more than that and it will take the fun out of reading! Good luck! 6y
TheRomantiCate @ElishaLovesBooks ok that makes sense ☺️☺️ 6y
SledgeReader @TheRomantiCate @laurenashley @ElishaLovesBooks Glad to read this thread. I‘ve been struggling with the same issue. Sort of found my way in the same direction. 😊 6y
TheRomantiCate @SledgeReader well as I‘ve been reading I‘ve been marking in the book, underlining things I want to remember, writing little thoughts in the margins... I don‘t know how it works for others, but I‘m doing my best hehe 😄 6y

The Drafter, Peri Reed, alters timelines. She isn‘t the only one with this talent, but it is uncommon. She rewrites time by backing it up and altering it as it plays out again. Unable to hold multiple timelines in her head, the Drafter losses chunks of memory. Anchors partner with Drafters and can hold the multiple timelines. They rebuild the Drafters‘ memories. This assumes the Anchor and the organization they work for are ethical…

I'm too lazy to go look for my print copy of this book involving drafting, which is their name for a kind of #timetravel. I like just about anything Kim Harrison writes.

I don't know. Love the characters and the concept but the plot was very convoluted and drawn out.

josie281 The Hallows is by far her best series. I had a difficult time with this one as well as her Dawn Cook YA fantasy. 7y
Skeeterisme @josie281 Will have to give The Hallows a try. Though I was so dismayed with Drafter that she may never get a second chance. 7y

The memories of a drafter are aided by their partner, an anchor. But as the story progresses Peri discovers that some of those memories may be missing.

This started off really strong. The premise was unique. It's not time travel so much as time revision. The concept of drafters and anchors was good, as was the covert government operation they work for. But by about 3/4ths through, the plot was circular and felt repetitious. This was the first book in the series and based on how lukewarm I feel, I don't think I'll read any more.

The premise of this series is interesting and the action sequences are exciting, but I would like the world building to be clarified.

Bookworm54 I did struggle with the first few chapters. Loads of technology and the whole drafter idea just wasn't explained until later. I still enjoyed this though! ☺️ 8y
Bambi_Unbridled I wish she would explain how the memory alteration works... how the anchors do what they do to make the drafter forget. 8y

So I have just been binge reading this since I got up and it's just amazing!
Kim Harrison has amazing character building, there were twists to keep you guessing, and you can't help but root for Peri.
Can't wait for the next one in the series, but the Peri Reed/Hollows crossover Waylaid will help fill that gap for now 😍

Overall, I really liked this book. It pulled me in right away and got me interested in the characters and their stories. In the middle I think she may have lost her memories a few more times than was necessary because I felt like we kept going backwards rather than moving the story forward. But several pages later I was back on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

In typical Kim Harrison style, you get thrown straight into the story! 🙂
Admittedly I struggled to keep up with the sheer amount of new concepts coming up in the first few chapters, but as the book progresses all of it starts to make sense, and I am loving it so far! 😍
