Yay
Added some lights to my bookcase for some holiday cheer. I may keep it like this year-round? Maybe add even more?!? #outofcontrol #shelfie
Been in a bit of a reading slump. This is 96% the same list I've had since August! 😕
Getting back on the #bookspin bandwagon...
@TheAromaofBooks
Reread Ready Player One and it's still great, but Ready Player Two suuuuucks sooooooo baaaaaad. I wanted to like it, but it's unlikable. Save yourself the frustration and skip it, even if you're a fan of the first one. It's just bad. 😬🤷♀️

Ready Player Two July #doublespin
I liked this quirky little book! It's like feminist-Hermione-booknerd magic for adults. Fun!
@suvata - heading back to you today!
Did I just cross out April and write in May with the exact same list because I didn't manage to finish a single book? Why yes... 😑 🤦

Ch. 35 #pemberlittens
Capricious Ed strikes again and I love this quote:
"He wished him to be a model of constancy; and fancied the best means of effecting it would be by not trying him too long." ?
Good thinkin', Sir Thomas, good thinkin'... ?
Ch. 33 Lady B is killing this aunt game today!
Aunt-ing to-do list:
1. Tell niece it's her duty to be a gold digger- Check.
2. Tell niece she won't be missed when she's gone- Check.
3. Pat self on the back for sending Chapman to dress niece in the first place (because how else could she have looked remarkably well?!)- Check.
4. Offer puppy as gold-digging reward- Check.
5. Actually listen to niece-
... I guess she fell asleep?

I bought this book solely based on the cover (😍) and the inside is just as beautiful as the outside. Loved it.

@MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm tagged me to pick my top ten fantasy/sci-fi books!
At first I was like, “Oh cool, this will be fun!“
Two seconds later: “How am I supposed to pick just ten? Whose idea was this?! This is cruel!“ 😂
Made some deep cuts, it was traumatic, but here they are: The Top Ten!
(...buut I still want to list more! 😭)
Random:
Saw another user post this today and thought it applied perfectly to the infamous Mrs. Norris! (That effing B...) 😤
😆 #pemberlittens
The end of Ch 26 is 🔥 👏 🔥
“It was impossible for her to be insensible of Mr. Crawford's change of manners. She had long seen it. He evidently tried to please her - he was gallant - he was attentive - he was something like what he had been to her cousins: he wanted, she supposed, to cheat her of her tranquility as he had cheated them; and whether he might not have some concern in this necklace! - She could not be convinced that he had not...“ ⬇
I simply cannot decide....
However, I have to mention that both of these appalling fuckbois had redeeming character arcs! Kind of. 🙃
🤞🤞🤞🤞 Come on, Henry!
Ch 24 #pemberlittens #chapteraday
Ch 24 #pemberlittens #chapteraday
Elon is a fitting representation of Crawford, no? 😆
Unpopular opinion: I don't hate Henry...? I'm not sure why. All signs point to you should probably hate him... 🤔 I'm holding out hope though. 🤦 Like Maria waiting for him to make his move. I'm Maria... Oh god. 😬
Chapter 23:
Someone has dinner table envy... Along with being jealous of Fanny about everything. What is this lady's deal? Is it about Fanny's mom? Does Mrs. N see herself/her inferior place compared to Lady B in Fanny and take out misplaced self-hatred on her? Is she just so insecure that she needs to put someone else down? What 👏 is👏 the 👏deal? Cuz I want to physically harm this woman. 😡😤😡
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
Ch 22:
Ok, I loved this chapter.
I feel like I got to know everyone a lot better and enjoyed seeing more interactions which brought out some dynamic traits in characters who have been fairly flat up to this point.
And the ol' Austen wit was super sharp!
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
I loved this little book!
I think it's probably best to go into this one as blind as possible. It's part of the fun! So all I'll say is that the main character is "charming, quite charming" and it was a fun, refreshing read.
???

Ch. 20:
You're a mean one, Mrs. N
Although she is the worst, I have to acknowledge that she may be one of the great criminal masterminds of her time.
No one knows how to mooch like Mrs. Norris.
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
My second #newyearwhodis pick from @megawhoppingcosmicbookwyrm
Wooof... Jack Torrance is a force of a character! 😳 😳 😳
This was my first Stephen King (won't be the last) and first horror genre book. I went in with a very open mind and not really knowing anything about the story other than pop-culture references to the movie. It exceeded all vaguely-formed expectations. Definitely a pick!
Chapter 13
Oh Ed... You capricious little twerp 😂🎭🤷♀️
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
Raises your spleen, indeed...
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
Chapter 12
Tom puts his foot in his mouth and Fanny actually laughs! What? I thought she could only look away scandalized, blushing for your impropriety. 😄
Glad to see Fanny have a bit of fun!
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
Chapter 9:
'Not half a mile,' was his sturdy answer; for he was not yet so much in love as to measure distance, or reckon time, with feminine lawlessness. 😂
'We have been exactly a quarter of an hour here,' said Edmund, taking out his watch. 'Do you think we are walking four miles an hour?'
'Oh! do not attack me with your watch.' 🤣
#pemberlittens #chapteraday
Sorry to be the slacker! Long, long day of work!
I have next to zero hope that you guys haven't already read these, but here we go! 😂🤪🤞 If none of these work I'll steal one of the suggestions you guys made that wasn't selected. They all sound good! 😁
@suvata @HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain
Ermmm... So I'm sitting here reading The Shining and decided to take a little break to play Wordscapes and THIS is the first puzzle to come up!
Should I be concerned?!? 😂😱😂😱
@MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm #newyearwhodis
Late post. January's completed board that makes no sense and February's board which will probably also make no sense! Yay! 😂
#bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks
January book illustrations:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Doyle #doublespin
Cannery Row - Steinbeck #bookspin
Binti: Home - Okorafor
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Skloot #newyearwhodis
A Tale of Two Cities - Dickens #thatsclassic
Every single one of these was a joy to read. Excellent month!
#monthlywrapup #bookreport #bookbits
Solid. Being a collection of previously published short stories, it got a bit repetitive and formulaic, which I found both eye-rolly and comforting at the same time.
Holmes is just a genuinely fun character to read. Even when he's being insufferable, there's just a charm there.
I started to list my fav stories in this collection and realized I was basically naming them all, so it's pretty good! A lot of iconic Holmes-ness in this one! 🧐🔍🕵️♀️
I love how Steinbeck writes people and places on the fringes of society without any judgment and allows you to exist so completely in an obscure little microcosm that you would never otherwise know. It's friggin' beautiful.
I found the dedication page way suspicious and after reading and falling in love with Doc, I was super pleased to learn that Doc is in fact Ed Ricketts (who is a straight fox and legend in his own right!) How cool is that? 😍
...who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will."
57 yrs later, same bs from "nice white people."

What an effing great book! I'm not going to lie, there are some slogs to power through, but I definitely found the payoff to be worth it. I freaking adore Sydney Carton and wish we spent more time with him throughout the story. But what I'm getting a big kick out of is that my dog happens to be named Sydney so from now on I'm going to condescendingly tell people “she's named after my favorite Dickens character.“ 😂 😆 😂 Score!
#thatsclassic
I inhaled this in two sittings and have been putting off my review because I know I can't possibly do it justice.
I learned so much I didn't know I wanted to know. The science, medical ethics, and story of Henrietta and her family are in turns horrifying, fascinating, heartbreaking, infuriating, and utterly incredible. Everyone should know her and her everlasting impact on our world.
Thank you @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm for the recommendation!!!
I'm about halfway through the second book. There have been moments I've had to muscle through, but on the whole I find it to be getting better and better with each chapter (to the point of getting a little misty eyed at the end of ch 13!) I also am loving Sydney Carton! I'm a sucker for a brooding, self-defeating misfit with a heart of gold!
#thatsclassic
Welp! I luckily got a shot of my January #bookspinbingo board moments before my helper arrived! 😂🐈🙄😂
#catsoflitsy
My December #bookspinbingo results! I got my bookspin, doublespin, and a bingo to boot! (I will be hard-pressed to repeat these results in January, but we'll see, lol.)
I had fun doing watercolor illustrations/fan art for my bingo board again! #bookbits
@thearomaofbooks
I read seven books in December and made an illustration for each (my book spin bingo squares, lol.)
Some are better than others, but it's been fun to indulge my inner book cover designer.
December's books:
A Christmas Carol - Dickens
The Vanishing Half - Bennett
Dead Souls - Gogol
Binti - Okorafor
Harrison Bergeron - Vonnegut
Pretty Little Wife - Kane
The Song of Achilles - Miller
