The Shadow of the Gods
The Shadow of the Gods | John Gwynne
From acclaimed fantasy author John Gwynne comes the first in the Bloodsworn trilogy, an epic of wild lands and wilder magic, where not all monsters fight with tooth and claw...and the treasures of the gods come at a price. This is the age of storm and murder. After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people: a huntress searching for her missing son, a jarl's daughter who has rejected privilege in pursuit of battle fame, and a thrall who has cast off his chains and now fights alongside the famed mercenaries known as the Bloodsworn. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos. Guys... Guys... Guys... this was... brutal.

If you enjoyed Skyrim and want to be immersed in a Norse-inspired world of Vikings and gore, Gwynne has you covered!

We have three POV narratives, their various quests intertwining to form the first part of what looks to be a bloody, action-packed trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book one, loved the set up of this Norse mythology realm. Loved the strong women Vikings and the Viking men that honor strength and loyalty. The trolls and other monsters in this book are great. Battle scenes for me were a bit long but they are needed and show the strengths of our characters.

Nessavamusic Such a good book, book 2 is just as good and book 3 is coming out later this year! 6mo

I was scared to start this but four chapters in and I‘m already liking it. However, I will have to stop before I go in deeper because the last book isn‘t out yet… I don‘t know if I‘ll be able to take the wait.

Edit: I think even my cat agrees. He‘s saying, “Don‘t read this yet.”

So good… this is not something in a genre I‘d typically choose, but I‘m so glad I did! Great writing, compelling characters, and I cannot wait to read the next one!

Finally got around to reading this one, really good and compelling, all the points of view you want to know what is happening. Very heavy on Viking lore. Looking forward to the next book.

Finished in bed last night and was going to get up and give it a fab review! But then got up and found out Terry Hall had died and the colour went out of the day.
The Specials were my political band, they knew about racism, poverty and classism and they wrote great songs we could shout and dance along too. They were the first band my son saw live and he ran on stage and moon stomped with them.

RIP Terry 😢

What‘s cool is taking a emotion or acting verb and giving it a Norse god name. I thought this was creative 😎😎😎

Starting a new audiobook & a new knitting project today! The project is a slouch beanie for the hubby & the book is the first in the Bloodsworn Saga, a fantasy epic set in a Norse inspired world. After the gods warred & died out, their fall shattered the land of Vigriõ.A new world has risen where jarls feud & monsters prowl, and the dead gods bones hold power. A huntress, a jarls daughter & a thrall will decide the fate of the world. #audioknitting

Wow this was epic story telling. A Viking inspired epic fantasy, that follows three main characters that at first seem not linked. Children are going missing and we follow our characters go on violent brutal adventures. I did not have the next book on my July tbr, but I think I need to continue this series sooner then later. 5⭐️!!

This one took me awhile to get into but I loved it once I did. A Norse inspired saga following Orka, a shield maiden searching for her son, Varg, once a thrall now a member of the Bloodsworn and Elvar, a Jarl's daughter & member of the Battle Grim 🐉

I‘ve been in such a reading slump and every book I try to read, I can‘t get into it. I don‘t know how to break this terrible slump! But I started this book and I‘ve gotten farther in it than others so my fingers are crossed this is the one to break it!

This is probably the most disappointing dnf of the year. I wanted to love The Shadow of the Gods so bad. I just can‘t get into it. I‘ve tried at least five times. So I think it‘s time to move on. I‘ve added it to my bookshop on PangoBooks if you want to check it out.

John Gwynne I applaud you!

Another book full of amazing and unique characters who you can't help but love. Everything about this book was perfect. The characters, the world-building, the action, the pacing. I went into this with high high expectations and I was not disappointed. I am so ready for the rest of the series!

Another five star read for me (as all of his books have been). I can't wait to get my physical copy and read this again.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review from #Netgalley. This was a great start to a new fantasy series! It features a world inspired by Vikings and Norse mythology and has a fun cast of characters and interesting creatures. The magic system is very interesting; magic users are descendants of extinct gods. A majority of the warriors and leaders in this book are female which is awesome. The ending! Ah!!!! So gooooood!
