The study is told from the lighthouse keepers from the time they disappeared and 20 years later it tells the story of the wives and how the loss has impacted them. Atmospheric and lonely.

Ooooo this was good. Three lighthouse keepers go missing from their light off the coast of Cornwall in 1972. Twenty years later an author is trying to talk to their partners to solve the mystery. Slowly unravelling, this is quietly mysterious, a little spooky, very gripping. A great read, particularly with a late winter storm lashing at the windows…

41/22 Gripping, disturbing, claustrophobic, sad, intense, not my average holiday read. I wasn‘t entirely satisfied with the ending but it tied it up in a pretty neat bow, which I wasn‘t expecting and I was glad of. I haven‘t had wifi for the last few days in France, but I took this photo as we left Newhaven for Dieppe and I started reading the tagged book. The English Chanel felt like the right place to start this book. It is moody and intriguing just like the sea.

Inspired by real events, this is a cleverly written story exploring the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers, exploring the feelings of each of the three men, and their respective partners, coping with isolation.

5-24-22: My 49th finished book of 2022! Inspired by a true story. In 1972, 3 light keepers go missing without a trace. In 1992, an author shows up to interview the significant others left behind after the disappearances, trying to come up with some answers. Told in both time periods by 6 different voices this story was actually quite sad. Loss, loneliness, neglect, are just a few of the topics touched upon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣4️⃣9️⃣

This was very good. Creepy and unsettling. It was uncomfortable to read, but mild enough to sit me. I had to skip a couple things and I'd rather some descriptions weren't there, but they added to the pathos of the story and were not at all lurid or manipulative

⭐️⭐️ Thought I would love this one being loosely based on a real event that occurred in 1900 with three missing light house keepers in the Hebrides but I‘ve been sadly disappointed. 😭

I kept hoping it would get better so I kept going with it but should have probably DNF this one.

I loved the idea but don‘t think it was executed well, tagged as a mystery, horror and supernatural thriller it just tried to do too much in my opinion.

3.5 ⭐️ This is a slow burn mystery that flits between 1972 and 1992 as a writer tries to unravel the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers. 1972 is the voice of the men and life on the tower. 1992 is the voice of the women left behind and how they have coped with not knowing what happened to their husbands. Despite being slow Stonex drops tidbits that keep you hooked and turning to the next page. Found myself saying "But what happened??!!??"

This was an enjoyable mystery about lamplighters, their wives and girlfriends and the mistakes they make because they are human. Loved the dual narrators and how the story came.together at the end. Well.done. would recommend

This was a great listen. An atmospheric slow burn mystery which kept you guessing. I had great sympathy with all of the characters. Each was deeply flawed but their narratives were compelling. I was pleased to hear the author acknowledge the influence of Tony Parker the late oral historian. His book The People Of Paradise has had a life long impact on me. I will definitely track down his book on light house keeping!

I got this book recommendation from a Book Tuber I follow. She said it was a hidden gem, so I decided to use it for my #BOOKED2021 “hidden gem”. What's not to love about a lighthouse story? There's always something inherently creepy, alienating, & unsettling about the conditions of life in a lighthouse. In this one, three lighthouse keepers disappear in 1972; they are never found. A writer emerges in 1992 to interview the former wives/partners of these men. The situation is mysterious & eerie; the fragmented narrative reveals secrets, heartaches, & pain—as well as the uncanny.

Perfect for the haunted season! I‘d like to know more about the true story behind the novel.

This was a very atmospheric story capturing both the isolation and claustrophobia of life on a lighthouse in 1972 when the 3 inhabitants disappear without explanation. 20 yrs on a writer interviews their wives and slowly secrets emerge. A perfect story as the nights draw in and the air gets a little chillier.

4⭐ Lovely slow burn story; the lighthouse keeping details drew me in.

A very slow burn mystery with multiple POVs. The writing is good, but does lean a toward literarye. The characters were sometimes hard to distinguish. The males blended together & the females all felt crazy. I didn't particularly like any of them either, but I think this was useful as it added to the suspense by making nearly everyone a suspect. There were some good red herrings & I did not guess the ending. A decent read, just not top of my list.

Part locked room mystery, part ghost story, part psychological study- this book takes inspiration from a real event, offering an explanation for the unexplainable. I liked the portions set at the time of the events, 1972 from the men's POVs, better than I liked the wives POVs 20 years later but I can see that their stories were needed to flesh out the men's. In the end, I'm satisfied, even glad of the answers the reader is given, but saddened ⬇️

Another book which surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. The mystery of 3 men who disappear from a lighthouse and the people they leave behind. The audiobook was really good and I felt the isolation and atmosphere in this one

The 3rd book in yesterday‘s #bookmail is this colourful hardcover of The Lamplighters, a mystery/thriller based on a true story. 1972, three lighthouse keepers disappear from their shift at a remote Cornwall lighthouse. When people arrive to relieve them, they find the door locked from the inside, all the clocks have stopped & no trace of any of the men. 20yrs later, a writer approaches the 3 wives left behind to tell their story. Sounds amazing!

Audiobook on loan from the library. Had to wait quite awhile for this one! Cant wait to read it!

This was a uniquely written, completely engaging mystery that was tangled with all the messy parts of life and a little bit of mysticism. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to discussing it during book club this month.

Wondering whether there was any information about the Flannen Isles case in the news about two years ago. Natasha Pulley's upcoming book The Kingdoms is probably based on the same true event (can't remember whether there was something in the acknowledgements).

4.5⭐️ I really liked the book, especially the last half of it, where the #mystery of what happened seemed to really to pickup steam. I had first heard about the book on the March 24th episode of the podcast History Extra and was immediately intrigued. The author did not let me down! I ended up enjoying this more than I expected. Three men go missing from a locked lighthouse / 20 yrs later a writer seeks answers by interviewing those left behind. Told from both the men‘s POV & the remaining family members. Very atmospheric & evocative. Slow at times, but I found the audio helped with the pacing. I would have liked the characters to be better drawn, more individualized as I often mixed up who was who.

It‘s very atmospheric & well written ~ doesn‘t feel like a debut

I loved the claustrophobic world Stonex creates inside the lighthouse. The damp, cold stone, the coolness of the brass handrails & the continual noise of the relentless sea - sets a brilliant landscape for the inner repression & life stories of the lighthouses keepers to play out. The life events that shapes the characters felt a little cliched and because of that I didn't feel the characters stood up too well to the power of the setting.

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so for me, the first 100 pages seemed to drag very slowly. But I always wanted to finish it and find out what happened.

This is based on a real-life event, when 3 lighthouse keepers disappeared with no explanation. It‘s told mainly from the differing POVs of the 3 wives / girlfriends left behind, with some letters and newspaper articles too and we learn of many secrets over the course of the book.

I loved most of this, just not the ending. Without giving away any spoilers I read a review today in The Times that said ‘I‘m still not sure if it was...⬇️
