HISTORICAL FICTION - WORLD WAR II - ROMANCE

One thing that draws me to a book is an old house, and Highbury House sounded amazing.

And with the mention of many gardens, I was pulled in from the start.

We meet Emma, present day, who was commissioned to restore the gardens of Highbury House.

I somehow managed to get sick again but thankfully had the perfect book to curl up with in bed all day. Set in three periods, the lives of five women are all connected by a stately home and its gardens. Friendship, heartache, determination and romance course through their stories as they create, protect, and restore gardens that mean so much to each of them.

After I figured out & distinguished the book‘s four women from each other, as well as the decade(s) they lived,& each one‘s connection to the same gardens,I was hooked.The gardens,designed by Venetia, a prominent female gardener/architect working in 1907, were lush,showcasing a riot of color, with the exception of the “Bridal Garden”which displayed all white flowers. Each woman was connected to each other over time.The author‘s characterization 🔽

There are 4 characters with different time lines(1907, 1944, 2021)to keep track of & the book is divided into seasons.I‘ve just gotten through winter and now I‘m into spring.I am enjoying this book tremendously. It‘s about gardens.The characters are very interesting,& so is the setting, & the historical & social background of each time period. It‘s still snowing steadily outside- I was out in 2 hours ago & it was 8 inches- must be more now! I am cozy and warm in my reading love seat, drinking tea with lemon and honey and nibbling on two pistachio shortbread cookies. My book of choice is The Last Garden in England, so I can immerse myself in the colors of nature.

Beautiful HF! The story of 5 women, each in their own timeline (1907, 1944, and present day) and how their lives were intertwined at the gorgeous gardens of Highbury Estate.

On the surface, this Book Club choice appeared to be “my kind of book”. Then why did I dread picking it up and so thankful that I finally finished it? Not sure. It did pick up towards the end. I was very happy to realize that I could use it for #booked2023 #setintwoormoretimeperiods. Emma in 2021, Beth in 1944 and Venetia in 1907 are united through a beautiful English garden at Highbury House.

This was the January pick for my IRL Book Club. As I had not finished it, I did not attend the meeting. Still reading and now behind next month‘s selection. Can anyone else relate?

4⭐️ I love to garden and most fiction books centered around gardening appeal to me. I enjoyed this one. Though predictable near the end, it was a pleasant afternoon easy read.

It took me a while to get into this book. There was also more characters than I expected. I liked the different generations and how everyone wasn‘t quite intertwined but were at the same time.

Reading during my haircut since I have to look down for a good portion…like I need a reason for a few pages! 💇🏻‍♀️

I picked this book based on the cover alone, and I‘m happy to say it worked out! It was told in three timelines but all centered around one English garden. It‘s so super cold here this week I enjoyed reading about a garden in bloom.

I absolutely loved this book with stories in three timelines centered around a garden. It‘s a hard book to describe in just a few words. Sweet, poignant, insightful come to mind. I found myself wrapped up in all three stories, and hated to see the book end. And I want to be in that garden.

Given how much I love gardens, plus the fact that the Chelsea Flower Show is currently underway, today seems like a perfect time to start this.

One garden, three different women, three different time periods. If you love gardening, and even if you don‘t, this is a wonderful book. Great summer read.

I‘m bailing for the romances. 😩 Out of curiosity, why does so much historical fiction include romances? I just want to get on with the mystery or action. It‘s difficult to skim on audio!

I tried sitting outside to read my book. Yeah, no. Too hot 🥵 But I did get a pretty picture before calling it quits and retreating back to the a/c #nofilter

I love when a much anticipated library hold becomes available. I suddenly have Friday plans that cannot wait.

Since reading The Secret Garden in the 5th grade, I'll read any book about a garden :). This was very Kate Morton-esque.

I am so mad at myself for waiting to read this book because I absolutely LOVED IT!! There was so much heart and heartache in each of these women‘s stories and I found them to be so real and relatable in their own ways (even if I didn‘t understand their choices). I loved how the light mysteries and loose connections came together and I can honestly say I loved each of the timelines equally (which never happens!). Just wonderful! #doublebookspin 5🌟

I‘m FINALLY starting this one today! I was going to start it last night but I had my first dose of the Covid vaccine yesterday and it made me too tired to read (who knew that was actually possible 😉). I can‘t stop looking at the cover!!! 🌺 🌹 🌸 🌱 😍

This is in my TBR pile- hope to read it one day....

Covering the years between 1907 to 2021 & the lives of 5 women, I loved this book with it‘s focus on creating a garden (1907), protecting it (WWII) & restoring it (2021). Flowing between the 5 women, the chapters fold over each other, similar to how we fold cake batter & what emerges is a lovely and well-written story. The garden details were interesting & I enjoyed these strong women. This is a slow read, the drama & changes are quiet. 4.5/5

I loved this, even though it took me a while to get hooked!
The start is slow, but once you‘re in the middle, it takes off and soars. Loved it!

Just what you want in a Historical Fiction/ Romance. 3 timeline, 3 different woman, it all works out in the end but not without tragedy along the way. Very enjoyable if predictable. 3 🌟

If you like Kate Morton (note: I LOVE Kate Morton), you will probably enjoy this multiple-timeline, multiple POV historical fiction centered around the garden at a Scottish manor. It‘s dreamy. 😍

So I seem to have a book buying problem at the moment 😬. My boss gave me a pretty significant Amazon gift card for Christmas and, while I did buy a few things I needed for the house, I‘ve spent the vast majority of it on preorders galore and Hamnet. Then someone mentioned Doubleday Book Club on Facebook and I was able to get the other two books for $9.99 each! I have no more room...so now I‘m thinking of buying a book cart 🤪!

One garden, 3 women spanning decades , and one important link. I loved this sweet book. It‘s a story of love, loss, determination, and joy. No earth shattering events just a nice tale. Thank you #Netgalley for the ARC!

I was obsessed with The Secret Garden when I was a child, so any book about the fabulous gardens in England appeals to me. This story is told on three timelines but it all fits together well. And the cover is gorgeous.
