Stoker's last, worst book is based on the legend of the Lambton Worm (in coal country rather than clay). It is awful, especially in the form I, and everyone else, read it: the 1925 edition. This edition claims to be the 1911 text, but not only cuts over 100 pages (and 12 entire chapters), but rewrites entire sections. The 1925 edition makes no sense and is way, way more racist. So now I need to read the real book. 😭

I love the pulpy images and the fact that one claims this to be “another masterpiece”. Granted, I‘ve never read it so I don‘t know if it‘s actually as bad as all that.

I wanted to review it at the end of October but honestly I was glad to have had finished it! So much #mongooselove to the entire #wormybuddyread group as it seems from their reviews we were all in the same boat.
Besides the racism displayed, there were moments while reading this that felt like Stoker lost his idea of execution on the plot which is a shame considering his other works.

Worst of the month (by a country mile!) was the #wormybuddyread title that I chose! Apologies to those who endured this sexist, racist book with me #mongooselove Thanks to those who joined me too - it was a tough month IRL and the #buddyread helped immensely ❤️ (I can't talk about my fav of the month because it's #topsecret for #TheCanadianTour #Canadagoespostal)

The overriding feeling I got from this book was of abridgment, like this was a drastically trimmed version of a longer, possibly more coherent story. And yet Stoker found time to add a character whose main role seemed to be for others to be racist about 😐 Not recommended for recreational reading. Maybe as part of a study on the evolution of the horror novel?

I implied I was bailing from this book for #wormybuddyread but it was my first time with Serial Reader & issues kept coming & I had to see it through-finishing up yesterday. Not much to say other than it's just really bad--shallowly written plot & characters & not at all scary unless you're a mongoose.😱The racism & sexism are downers. The movie is on Showtime & I plan to rewatch it. It's different than the book & also bad-but in a campy fun way.

Only one issue to go now, thank goodness! But... it arrives in 31 hours?! What's going on here?

I absolutely love Dracula, so this was a major disappointment.

The plot was incredibly hard to follow, characters just magically knew impossible things, and you don‘t even really find out much about the white worm or the lair!

I understand there was some racism at the time this was written, and it is no worse than that seen in books like Gone with the Wind, but the character added nothing to the story. It‘s all very odd...

Meta reading: Reader, don't think any of this will make any sense, even if I did go into a long pseudoscientific lecture that completely misrepresents evolution. My characters will mysteriously know exactly what they need to know, and we shall all just ignore anything that's inconvenient or inconsistent.

Day 20 #uncannyoctober #rocktober I've been reading this book with #wormybuddyread & lots of people are bailing due to the book being boring, its incessant racism & the fact that most of us care only for the mongooses. I've considered it & today I got a sign but I'm not sure if it's keep going or stop.😬I picked up a RX at Walgreens today & at the counter heard a scrambling sound & a guy with a broom runs out from the back yelling 'Watch Out!'👇🏻

Apologies to fellow #wormybuddyread readers but I'm gonna have to bail on this one. I can't bear another moment of these fascists going on about the supremacy of the white race. For all I care, they can stare at each other and mesmerise themselves to death. The effing white worm is taking too damn long to show up; when it does, I hope it promptly munches on all of them and lets Oolonga go free. Since I doubt that's the ending, bailing seems wise.

Reading this latest #serialread maybe I overestimated Adam in thinking he has ulterior motives... I mean for all I know this is the only living relative he has so why not be excited? He could be the human equivalent of a puppy...
Also the introduction of a new character, adding a female into so far an all male group could make the next read interesting depending on what's said.
I guess only time will tell.

I am not reading this on serial reader, so may get a little ahead or behind at times.

The first 2 chapters were an interesting start. Everyone seems much too pleased to be meeting each other, which seems very suspect even if they are long lost relatives. And if the Caswall estate has been empty for so long, and the family have a reputation for being cold hearted, why are the other estates celebrating the return of the family? 🤔

I really enjoyed this somewhat lesser known Bram Stoker novel, making a great bookish revival. The giant hawk kite of Edgar Caswall sets a lingering darkly atmosphere, reading quite hilariously as a form of passive-aggressive energy vampirism. The green-eyed Worm glow is vintage horror awesomeness as well. - I'm glad to have a Penguin yellow cover copy. I've also noticed the #serialreader app has it in. 🕯
