Bourbon Empire
Bourbon Empire: The Past and Future of America's Whiskey | Reid Mitenbuler
17 posts | 5 read | 23 to read
Unravelling the many myths and misconceptions surrounding America's most iconic spirit, Bourbon Empire traces a history that spans frontier rebellion, Gilded Age corruption and the magic of Madison Avenue. Whiskey has profoundly influenced America's political, economic, and cultural destiny. In fact, few products better embody the United States, or American business, than bourbon. Reid Mitenbuler's writing is as gutsy and bursting with attitude as the drink itself, capturing this vivid tale of innovation, success, downfall and resurrection.

Today is National Bourbon Day, apparently! So, am having one even though it‘s a Monday night 🥃

I‘ve been reading this book a bit at a time since forever, because it does put one in the mood for bourbon and I can‘t have that all the time 😂. It‘s informative though!

BkClubCare 🥃 3y

The “James Joyce” is supposed to be made with Irish whiskey, but I only had bourbon. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Recipe found in this month‘s Rachael Ray Magazine.

Pickpick

Really enjoyed this book. It was a little slow at times but I think that is because I'm not a drinker. But even though I don't drink, I loved this book and really enjoyed the narrator, Brian O'Neill. If it sounds interesting to you, definitely pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

Even though I don't drink (never acquired the taste), I am finding this book fascinating. I love these micro histories. Also enjoying the narrator, Brian O'Neill, who reminds me of Edward Herrmann a whole lot. Perfect choice to read this.

After chopping wood all day ahead of the season's first possible blizzard, I think it's time to set the chainsaw & good 'ole-fashion axe down, take a shower, & settle in front of the fire with a fine bourbon, & read about bourbon 😎👍🏻. @BookBabe 's very proud of me ☺️. She doesn't realize I did this sort of thing all the time on the horse farm. And we'd go out in the snow & always chop down a real tree for Christmas. Love that fresh pine scent!

BookBabe 😍 You're amazing! 😘 8y
LeahBergen Gasp! A real-life lumbersexual! 😉 You need to sport a beard and a plaid shirt, though. 8y

Litlady You've inspired me, sir. I must do my Commonwealth (KY) proud and read this book and pop open some Woodford Reserve on ice with a dash of bitters. Yum!! I'm a fan of Jim Beam Honey as well. Cheers mate! 👍😀🍹You and @BookBabe stay warm! 8y
Aseleener Now I'm picturing you as the Brawny paper towel guy. Lol! 8y
Lindy I haven't seen log holders like those. Is it better than stacking the wood on the ground? 8y
LibrarianToujours Blizzard?! It was warm enough here today that our boiler went into summer mode and turned the heat off! 8y
KimM Great picture. Reminds me of living in Virginia and chopping wood with Dad for the woodstove. ❤️ 8y
LitsyGoesPostal 😊👍🏻 8y
Zelma 👍 similar chores here today though it doesn't get that cold; our fireplace is more for enjoyment. But Mr. Z trimmed a bunch of trees on our property today and tomorrow I plan to chainsaw into logs. 😀 8y
CoffeeAndABook Ahhhh yes, a wood fire is the absolute hight of winter joy. A fire, a mate, a book. Maybe a hot or cool drink to top it off 🔥🌨📚🔥We started collecting driftwood a few years back, it's so much easier to chop/saw & doesn't need long drying periods. I don't know if you have a body of water nearby? Anyway - enjoy the fire & possibly the blizzard 👍🏻❄️☃ 8y
MrBook @BookBabe ???! @BookishMarginalia *blushes* ☺️. @LeahBergen Hah! Just came across that term in "The Heart Goes Last"! We really are doppelgängers ???????! @Litlady From one commonwealth resident to another, you have most excellent taste ?????! @Aseleener Just shorter in stature ???! @Lindy I believe so, it prevents rot underneath and less exposure to creepy crawlies. They can still climb up to the logs, but not as likely. 8y
MrBook @NHLibrarian It was 60 degrees yesterday! Everyone was outside working in short-sleeves. Then by midnight--BAM!--down to the 30s. Amazing! @KimM Nice 😊👍🏻!!! @Zelma A take-no-prisoners worker! I dig it 😉👍🏻! @CoffeeAndABook Niiiiiice 😊👍🏻! Thank you! 8y

For all of you in the @Litsy family who know me well, you know I can't wait to start this #BOTM book 😁! Here are two of the bourbon whiskey libations we have in the house: Jim Beam Honey (I love anything with honey) and Willett Straight. Do you have a favorite adult beverage? (Yes, @becausetrains , I know yours is Spaten Optimator 🙄😂👍🏻.) And have you found any particular book-libation pairings to work exceedingly well 😎👌🏻?

alisonrose I don't drink at all, but liquor bottles and glasses always look so pretty 😋 8y
Suzze Microbrews. Today is the last of the summer beer on hand, Nicey Spicey from Shorts in Elk Rapids, MI. American Wheat Ale with orange zest, lemon zest, coriander and peppercorns. I hate whiskey, when I was about 14 I stole one of dad's mini bottles from our bar and drank it with a friend in the alley. Then threw up. Since then I hate even the smell of it. My ex and I went on the Jack Daniels tour in Tennessee and I had to leave the tour or be sick. 8y
Zelma 😂 you and @becausetrains crack me up! I don't drink a ton of hard liquor but I have fond memories of drinking Mai tais and reading historical crime fiction on the beach in Hawaii. The depravity of H.H. Holmes was a perfect balance to the beauty of the beach and my yummy sweet drink. 8y

Carolineleavitt Sometimes I wish i could drink but half a glass and I am belting out show tunes 8y
Gayan I live 4 miles from the Jim Beam Distillery. 😉 8y
britt_brooke I like a good craft beer. 🍻 Saisons, wheats, goses, pale ales and the occasional IPA. And boxed wine, aka Mommy's Juice Box. 8y
britt_brooke @Gayan My in laws live in your general vicinity. 😊 8y
melbeautyandbooks Champagne is my favorite 🍾. Although I don't get too much reading done while drinking that. Hot tea or hot chocolate pairs well with lots of reading for me! ☕️ 8y
Eugeniavb Lets see: Weihenstephaner white beer with any Stephen King book. Hobo Zinfandel with any Virginia Woolf book. And a very good Venezuela rum such as Ron Pampero aniversario with any Hector Abad Faciolince book. 🍺🍷🍹 8y
Gayan Wow, I live in Boston, by the smaller distillery. The larger one is in Clermont, KY. That's about 12 miles from me. 8y
smccallum I used to be a big fan of whiskey then showed it too much love one night which it didn't reciprocate the morning after and have been unable to drink it since! 8y
KimM Is that a vintage decanter set? 8y
Jessicav Straight up Jim Bean is my preference, though I believe I have a bottle of JB Devils Cut downstairs as well. This book looks fabulous. 8y
Luv2readbookz Buffalo Trace Bourbon Creme. It only comes out once a year. Add ice and root beer and you have a bourbon root beer float. Yum! 8y
Chassie Kentucky Mule! 8y
becausetrains @MrBook 😂 actually I prefer dark beers in general, on the rare occasion when I have a drink. I also love a good whiskey, often rye or Irish but sometimes Maker's. 8y
Tav Do you know about this excellent history of the spirit? Came out 3 years ago... 8y
Alisnazzy Krusovice (the bock version especially) which is a Czech beer I so rarely find here. When I was back in Prague in January I drank A LOT of it lol. 8y
Shemac77 Oban scotch. Or Glen Breton, a Nova Scotia whiskey. And Maker's Mark. And red wine, lately it's been The Dreaming Tree Crush. And Grolsch. And....and....and.... 8y
BethFishReads We are a scotch v bourbon house. 8y
Megabooks I used to love a good Manhattan. 😃 But nothing beat a vodka gimlet. 8y
Daisey I do just a little bit of home winemaking and find books about the history and science of alcohol fascinating. I'll have to look for these as well! Thanks, @Tav and @MrBook. As for drinks of choice, I like variety but always keep bottles of whiskey and rum on hand. 8y
Curley_Bender High West whiskey, specifically the Campfire blend. 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 oh, laphroaig always hits the spot. 8y
Lizpixie My husband loves a great scotch or bourbon, I just bought him some Laphroaig recently & there's some nice Tasmanian whiskey being produced now. I'm a tea totaler these days, I used to drink, a lot, when I was younger, mostly beer but I loved a good cocktail, but now alcohol & my medications do not mix, that is if I like breathing.🍺🍸🍹☕️ 8y
ValerieAndBooks Dark beers (stouts and porters) and I especially love vodka martinis! 🍸🍸👍🏻👍🏻 8y
becausetrains @Lizpixie 😳 yes, please keep breathing!! Alcohol doesn't play well with my mental health meds (and I get insufferable) so I only do one or two drinks at most. No more pounding fifths of JD for me (cough @OSChamberlain cough 😋) 8y
Nonaroo I like a good gin and tonic with lime or a good Cabernet. 🍸🍷 8y
Kitta Anything alcoholic 😂 most often though a glass of red wine, preferably by the fire and snuggled with a cat! Although our NYC apt obvi doesn't have a fireplace, my parents place does and it's lovely. 8y
Theresa A big bold dry red wine on a chilly Fall night or during a snowstorm or pretty much any time. 🍷❤️🍷 8y
OSChamberlain Hahaha I definitely don't drink fifths of JD. It's just my choice when I do drink. It's also the only alcoholic beverage that's gotten me drunk. 8y
audiothing Mount Gay rum 8y
audiothing Oh, and beer, just don't like wine I'm afraid 8y
MrBook @alisonrose I only have a drink a day, sometimes none, and especially none when I know I'm going to be driving 😊👍🏻. They do look great though, don't they 😁? @Suzze Ohh, I've had some great microbrews, & yours sounds delicious 😁👍🏻. I don't blame you after the alley incident. @Zelma 😁👍🏻!!! Sounds like the same scene I would find @BookBabe in 😎👌🏻. @Carolineleavitt 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻! That's perfect ☺️😉! @Gayan Get out!!! 😳😆😁 8y
MrBook @britt_brooke 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻👌🏻! I like your style and your craft beer preferences 😎👌🏻. @melmelbeauty 😂👏🏻👍🏻 on the champagne. Love hot tea and chocolate with my reads 😎👍🏻🙌🏻! @Eugeniavb Oh my, you have it down pat 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻!!! I'm going to try those pairings ☺️👍🏻. @smccallum Aye, whiskey's a tough lover, it is, and should always be treated with respect 😊😎👍🏻. I don't blame you. 8y
MrBook @KimM Good question! Not sure, but I do know it's at least three decades old ☺️. @Jessicav Ooh, yes, we have Devil's Cut as well 😁👍🏻🙌🏻! A Jim Beam fan is a #KindredSpirit of mine 😎👌🏻. @Luv2readbookz Oh. My. Goodness! Must. Try! You have my palate in a ruckus now, lol. Which time of year 😁? @Chassie Ohh-hhh, yes 😆😁😎👍🏻👏🏻🙌🏻! I've had that, and I'm surprised it's not more popular. 8y
MrBook @becausetrains We are #KindredSpirits 😊😎👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! Dark stouts are our friends. And Irish whiskey is great stuff. @Tav No! But now I do 😁👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻, thank you ☺️! @Ambrosnazzy The place I used to work at had a lot of proud folks of Eastern European descent, but I haven't heard of this one. Will definitely add it to my TBD list 😁👏🏻👍🏻, thank you! @Shemac77 Oooh, I like what I see here! Adding some of these to my TBD list 😁☺️👏🏻👍🏻! 8y
Shemac77 Ha! TBD list! Love it...and scrambling to make a list of my own :) 8y
MrBook @BethFishReads Sounds like an exciting house 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻! @Ebooksandcooks Sounds like you and @BookBabe would get along smashingly well 😎👍🏻! @Daisey Niiiice! You are awesome 😁👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻👌🏻! @Curley_Bender Must. Try! Thank you for that. Added to my TBD 😁👍🏻🙌🏻! @fern @Lizpixie Yes! Laphroaig! Right on right on 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! Tasmanian whiskey sounds interesting 😊👍🏻. Aww, yeah, we on @Litsy need you!!! 8y
MrBook @ValerieAndBooks Oh my, we are #KindredSpirits 😁😊👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! Stouts and porters are my favorites 😎👌🏻. @becausetrains Careful with the libation-meds pairing, my friend, I need you on here 👍🏻! @Nonaroo You and @BookBabe should hang out sometime 😎👏🏻#KindredSpirits. @Kitta 😆😁😸👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! You, me, & @BookBabe should meet up sometime when we're in the City 😊. @Theresa I love how you started specific & broadened quickly 😆😂👏🏻👍🏻 8y
MrBook @OSChamberlain JD is a powerful friend 😂👏🏻👍🏻. @audiothing Ooh, added to my TBD. I'm not a huge wine fan 😊. 8y
MrBook @Shemac77 😉👍🏻🙌🏻 8y
KimM That make it vintage! Very cool set. 8y
MrBook @KimM Yesss 😆😁👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! Thanks! 8y
courtney Honey jack is so good. My favorite drink is always a good Manhattan or Old Fashioned. I haven't figured out to make a great one at home yet 😭 8y

MrBook @LeahBergen 😟 There must be *some*thing we can figure out for you!!! In the iconic words of Winnie the Pooh: think, think, think. @BarbaraTheBibliophage 😂😂😂 I don't want to be publicly embarrassed 😂👍🏻. @Reading_E *smack my head* My bad! Okay: Willet Bourbon Whiskey; if that's a no go for you, my favorite is Wild Turkey American Honey; and if *that's* a no go, Jim Beam Honey. Or, heck, just buy a bottle of each and alternate 😂👏🏻🙌🏻! 8y
MrBook @susanw 😟 You too?! What's with #BOTM 😔? @BethFishReads 😁👌🏻! @Godmotherx5 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻! @asiriusreader 😁😁😁! 8y
