The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Oathbringer, from an epic fantasy writer at the top of his game. After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage. Now, as new technological discoveries begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength.

Okay, so I'm on page 300 of my Rhythm of War reread, and considering I have the whole rest of the month to finish it - I think it's safe to say that I'm in the home stretch! 🥳🎉🎉🎉 There are a couple of touch and go moments there, where I was unsure about whether I would really be able to finish rereading this whole series before the next book comes out in early December! But I've totally got this! 💕🥳 And it has been such a fun adventure! 🥰

Rachel.Rencher Wow! I'm reading the series for the first time - about halfway through Words of Radiance - and I'm already looking forward to rereading it all. Did you start with Mistborn? I started with WoK and I feel like I'm understanding it all well enough, but I have the whole Mistborn series on deck to read when I'm done. 4d
Branwen @Rachel.Rencher I actually started my Sanderson journey with The Stormlight Archive! I have read the first in the Mistborn books, but it's been a while and I probably need to revisit it before continuing on with the series! It's going to be one of my 2025 reading goals! 🥰 4d

I'm almost done with my Stormlight Archive reread! I just have to finish this last book! I'm really excited about Book 5 which comes out early next month! The quote above is one of my favorites from the series, and has brought me a lot of comfort this week.

I finally have a Sanderson shelf! Hopefully with enough space for the 5th book in The Stormlight Archive series (I doubt it) .😄 I have read all of these with the exception of Arcanum Unbounded that still has some short stories left unread.
The thick paperbacks have the disadvantage of easily getting the spines damaged if you open the books. I might one day get the hardcovers if I feel like upgrading my physical library, but not for now...

Time for another monthly wrap up. May was a good month. I finally finished up Rhythm of War, which took most of my month. But I listened to some really great audiobooks along the way too. I‘m glad to finally have finished The Stormlight Archives, but I can‘t wait for the next book to come out.

What did you read this month?

I‘ve done it! I finally finished Rhythm of War. Overall, I mostly loved it but I did find that it dragged in a few places.

I think it was because more of Venli‘s pov was thrown in the mix. I found myself wanting to get back to the characters that I know and loved. But I eventually warmed up to Venli and the story picked back up.

Sanderson closed a lot of plot points in this story but opened up so many more. I‘m interested to see where it goes.

The stars aligned and Cj and I finally had three days off together. So, we packed up the truck and headed to Dekalb County Lake in Sylvania to camp for the first time this year.

We had a ton of fun! I wasn‘t ready to leave. It was a weekend full of food, family, and good books.

1️⃣ Shallan from “The Stormlight Archives”. Shallan started as a con artist, so she‘s experienced in pretending to be other people. And now that she can cast illusions, she could even bring her own CGI effects to Hollywood!

2️⃣ “Orphan Black”. Shallan could play an entire Clone Club almost as well as Tatiana Maslany did! Sorry, Shallan, but NO ONE could be better at playing clones than Tatiana was!

TheSpineView Didn't think about her. Excellent choice! Thanks for playing! 2y

4 out of five wind sprites! 🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️

It‘s a few days since I finished this buddy read with the wonderful @Branwen and I‘m still processing my feelings. While I enjoyed the book, it is my least favorite of the series so far, as I felt the heroes stories went in unsatisfying directions. But while the protagonists got short-changed, the villains shined brighter than ever, thanks to the introduction of the fascinating Raboniel!

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView 😀

I just realized I still haven‘t posted a review of this book! 😳

1. Raboniel. She‘s everything a book villain should be: charismatic, clever, formidable, and usually at least three steps ahead of the heroes. She‘s so good at being bad, I almost started rooting for her!

2. I‘d like to see the main characters all get happy endings, but since it will be a Sanderson book, that ain‘t happening! 😭

RaeLovesToRead I also kinda loved Raboniel 😄 3y

1. I‘m hoping to finish both the tagged book and “Frankenstein” this month! I only have 50 pages left in Rhythm of War!

2. As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, I am so sick of everything being described as smelling of “jasmine”! C‘mon, fantasy authors, there are other scents out there! Also, like many readers, I‘m so sick of characters releasing breaths they didn‘t know they were holding! 🤦🏻‍♂️

RaeLovesToRead 50 pages?! You can do it, Dave! I believe in you! 😄😁 There was an interesting passage about Jasmine in the book I'm reading - I'll tag you... 3y

Mehso-so

Where do I even start reviewing a book like Rhythm of War?

Brandon Sanderson bores me rigid for 600 pages and then blows my mind for another 600.

At the start, I was ready to bail on the whole series, by the end he's got me craving the next instalment.

There are things I love about the series, there are things I intensely dislike.

When is the next one coming out?

Branwen I haven't heard any news on when the next one is coming out! 😃💕 3y
The_Penniless_Author I need to give him a try. I loved how he closed out the Wheel of Time series, and I've heard a lot of great things about him. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen At least it'll give my wrists a break... this book was HEAVY 😆 (although I have To Paradise next so maybe spoke too soon) 3y
See All 8 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author I find it hard to recommend Stormlight. I'm committed to it, but it has been something of a pain in the arse getting this far. I've heard pretty much unanimous praise for his Mistborn series though - maybe start there? I'm reading those next (after catching up with my Robin Hobb's) 3y
The_Penniless_Author Yeah, Mistborn and Way of Kings are the two I usually hear. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Way of Kings is Stormlight too. It's the first (and probably best) of the series, but the series isn't yet complete. (Don't know if that bothers you or not!) They're very lore heavy. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead O.o I think I will like lore-heavy fantasy; pretty that's been my favorite part of my own Hobb volume so far and other fantasy I've dabbled in. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @tokorowilliamwallace You will love Brandon Sanderson then! He is Mr. World Builder himself! 3y

"We need both heart and mind," Lirin said. "The heart might provide the purpose, but the head provides the method, the path. Passion is nothing without a plan. Wanting something doesn't make it happen."

tokorowilliamwallace Actually, I think there's evidence in cognitive science it's the opposite: thought is nothing without the emotional drive to make it happen; emotion is the driver of action and infuses life into mere instinct and colours experience and purpose into biological-electrical activity, determines neuronal pathways towards difference and evolution. But it's a good quote. I just learned about book 6 in Mistborn, and it sounds intriguing. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @tokorowilliamwallace Hence why you need both head and heart. Directionless emotional intent is just as useless. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace I found this from Sanderson as I was reading Mistborn last night, on training with the Soother from their crew:

Vin: 'But the emotions will fade, won't they?'
Breeze: 'Yes. But memories stay. If people associate strong emotion with a strong event, they'll remember it better.'

(Look away now Sanderson-superfans. I don't want to make you sad. 💕 )

I'm on page 369.

There are 1222 pages.

1222 - 369 = 853 pages to go.

853 pages is about 28.5 hours more of my life.

The fact that I am calculating this is probably a sign that I'm not enjoying myself any more. I never usually DNF books though, so I'm committed.

Please get better, Book!

tokorowilliamwallace Rum'll make it go quicker. But I do like the thickness! What were they drinking in the first Mistborn? Maybe just wine or Mead. I'm currently in Mistborn, by recommendation. I've already got some character flaw complaints. I own Elantris, too, but never got to it all of these years (probably only like 6). What's the difference between the two series, in your mind? (Style, characters, feel, world-building, themes) 3y
RaeLovesToRead @tokorowilliamwallace I actually haven't read Mistborn yet. I have the first book, but I was trying to get up to date with these first. (And I have a lot of Robin Hobb that I'll probably read first too). I've been told the series' are different but I'm not sure in what way. I think they are drinking Orange Wine in Stormlight, so I may just grab a chalice of Irn Bru 🤣🤣 Failing that, I've got some chili mead stashed somewhere... 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead I wanna see the Irn Bru and chili Mead! Drinks and cheese parties at your place sound like they'd be so much fun. I miss the wine and cheese and charcuterie days with my roommate and his mother. I'm around 80 pages in of the 9th volume of Hobb, in games of Thrones, Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, the second volume of another obscure fantasy author, and just recently made progress with Modesitt's Corus world. We should buddy read! 3y
See All 18 Comments
Soubhiville IMO Mistborn is better. Sanderson does get very detailed with world building and explaining magic systems. I also loved Elentris and Warbreaker, which are stand alones so a much smaller commitment that‘ll give you a taste of his style without the commitment. 3y
Soubhiville I did finish this one but honestly thought this world was so complicated I won‘t continue the series. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @tokorowilliamwallace When I've finished Rhythm of War, I'll be starting the Liveships trilogy if you want to buddy read any of those?... then I'm moving on to Fitz and the Fool 2nd trilogy and then probably Mistborn or Malazan series (haven't decided yet!) If I end up having a Mead & Fantasy session, I'll be sure to take a picture! 😄 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Soubhiville It seems to be dragging at the moment... there's no sense of purpose or intrigue to keep me hooked 😔 I'm happy to give Mistborn a go though - I've heard nothing but good things. By the way, I'm also reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings so it'll be another #authoramonth read completed 💙 3y
Branwen Noooooooooo! 😭 It really really does get better and more exciting, I promise! ❤📖❤ Help me out here, @DaveGreen7777 ! 😁 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen I'm so sorry 🙈🙈🙈 Please don't unfriend me! 😅😅😅 3y
vivastory I've heard a lot of bad things about RoW. The only Stormlight entry I read was the first one, which I thought was great. Waiting a bit closer to the release of book 5 to binge the other 4. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I have similar issues with all of them, but The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance built and built to fantastic endings, whereas Oathbringer was sloppier (but had redeeming features.) I'm not sure where RoW will end up, but I'm just not looking forward to picking it up at the moment ☹ 3y
Branwen @RaeLovesToRead I would NEVER unfriend you over something like that, my dear friend! 😁💕📚 Everyone has different books that work or don't work for them and that's what makes the world go round! ❤ Maybe if you tried one of his other works, like Mistborn or Skyward you would enjoy him more! Skyward is really fun! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen 😁💕 I do plan on reading Mistborn (I've got the first book). After Rhythm of War I'll probably read Liveships & the 2nd Fitz & the Fool trilogy... then I'll give Mistborn a go... and if I don't like Mistborn I'll go into hiding, haha, because EVERYONE loves Mistborn 🤣 3y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead @Branwen Well, I must confess, I haven‘t quite enjoyed Rhythm of War as much as the other books in the series (the characterization of Shallan in this book especially bothered me)! 🙈 However, I will say the story definitely gets better once Raboniel arrives, she‘s quickly become my favorite antagonist in the series so far! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 I shall watch out for Raboniel then... hopefully she will spice things up a bit. At the moment Kaladin is moaning about how being a doctor is so UNFULFILLING unlike, you know, killing people 🤣🤣 And Shallan has become a triumvirate and is currently pulling some Tyrion-esque shenanigans on a boat. (Man, I hate boats.) I preferred Shallan just being Shallan (perhaps with a side helping of alter-ego Veil) 3y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Yeah, that‘s what bothers me about Shallan in this one. It felt like “Oathbringer” had already addressed and resolved Shallan‘s identity crisis, so I was disappointed that this volume decided to double down on Shallan‘s other personalities instead. Like you, I‘d prefer Shallan to be… Shallan! 😐 3y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 I agree! Maybe with fewer jokes though 😂 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead I'll look out for them, but I just bought two more Terry Goodkind last night, oops. 3y

I did it! It took about a month, but I finished this book. It features mental health a lot, including suicidal thoughts. It begins one year after the end of the last book. We get to travel through Shadesmar again, which I find absolutely fascinating. Amazing worldbuilding and I'm very much invested in these characters. Sanderson is writing the next book this year, so I have a bit of a wait to find out what happens next.

Sanderson somehow keeps raising the stakes - book #4 and it just gets more intense. I really appreciated Navani's character arc in this one. And it's impressive how everything starts to tie together and reveal more about how the world of Roshar (and the Cosmere) works without compromising character development or plot. It doesn't drag, despite the length - if anything, sometimes there's almost too much going on to keep track of it.

Finishing this was the culmination of a year-long reading of all 4,574 pgs of the series so far. I‘ve grown attached to the characters though this one became repetitive. I also missed the dynamic of certain characters‘ interactions as they were mainly split up in the 2nd half of this book. I loved seeing Navani grow as an inventor. Shallan‘s & Kaladin‘s stories were exhausting as they battled inner demons. Wit provides some of my favorite moments.

“‘Extinction is the natural escalation of this war,‘ Leshwi whispered. ‘If you forget why you are fighting, then victory itself becomes the goal. The longer we fight, the more detached we become. Both from our own minds, and from our original Passions.‘”

“He stepped softly through the library. Honorspren liked their books, judging by the extensive collection—but he rarely saw them in here. They seemed to enjoy owning the books, treating them like relics to be hoarded.”

Hoarding books but not getting around to reading them? Apparently if I were a creature from a fantasy novel, I‘d be an Honorspren! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's finally time! I finished Oathbringer last night and am finally moving on to Rhythm of War today.

Couldn't have come at a better time. Repairs on my car are taking longer than expected, which killed my holiday weekend plans. But at least I should get to really dig into reading.

Book Outlet sale … 9 books! Amazon … 1 book.

The HC of RoW was $8! The map on the reversible dust jacket was worth the $!

I like Cussler‘s Oregon Files! There wasn‘t a picture on the website but it was $3. I took it out of the box to find that it‘s SIGNED by Cussler!

25 books/audiobooks purchased in July! (1 hasn‘t been delivered yet)

OK I‘ll stop gushing … I obviously have a book problem …. Oh well … at least I‘m enjoying it! 🙌

vivastory The Ambergris bind up is gorgeous! Although I already own all 3, it's really tempting. Interlibrary Loan sounds fascinating, just added to my TBR 3y
Twainy @vivastory I admit to a few cover buys but this time I read the summaries … they all look great! 2 are for my nephew but I‘ll have to read them first. I saw the author of the Ambergris book wrote a series I liked so 👍🏼 hoping for some winners! 3y
vivastory I *may* have just bought the ambergris collection 😬 😂 3y

He stepped away from the wall. Syl stood in the air beside him, inspecting the fabrial.
“So?” Kaladin asked her. “What do you think?”
“I think you‘re going to look extremely silly using it. I can‘t wait.”

Syl is THAT friend who enjoys her friends‘ embarrassment just a little too much! 😂🤣

“The various humans continued their packing, storing everything in wagons for the day‘s storms. The humans were good at judging the arrival of those - though they were often wrong on the hour, they were usually right on the day.”

We‘re good at predicting the weather?! This book really is high fantasy! 😂🤣

Jennaree3 Anyone remember headlines on late night Jay Leno? Used to crack me up 3y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 141.

Thank you for this #ThoughtfulThursday @MoonWitch94 and thank you for the tag @Branwen 😀

1️⃣ “That” death from “Mistborn: The Final Empire”. If you read the book, you know the one I mean! 😢

2️⃣ “The Inheritance” by Tom Savage. I have a problem with twist endings that make no sense or don‘t hold up under scrutiny, but this was a twist ending done right! It blew me away, and it made perfect sense when I looked back at the story. 😱

3️⃣ Done! 😁

Branwen YES! YES TO NUMBER 1! 😭😭😭😭😢 I TOTALLY agree! 4y
Branwen Also! I'll have to try out that Tom Savage book! It sounds epic! 😲 4y

I have my sunny weather reading space set up for lunch time reading and couldn't be happier. Grad school has been burning me out on reading but I have finally gotten into Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson which I bought on the release date in November and left on my bookshelf until I had the will to read again.

“That is the most ridiculous thing I‘ve ever heard! Robbing Jasnah.”
“Isn‘t it though?”
“Robbing JASNAH?!”
“I know!”
“She‘s never mentioned this, so I bet you did it, didn‘t you? At least, you fooled her for a little while.”
“I totally did! I almost escaped. Except, you know, she‘s Jasnah!”

Rule #1 of the Stormlight Archive... Never EVER mess with Jasnah Kholin! 😳

RaeLovesToRead I knew she wasn't really dead!!! Haha 4y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead If Jasnah was in “Game of Thrones”, she would have won the Iron Throne and vanquished her enemies before the first episode was even over! 😂🤣 4y

4.75⭐What a roller coaster ride! This book had a slower pace than the other books in the series due to the themes of politics and war, but it had all of the heart, air of mystery, grandiose world-building, and even humor that I've come to expect from this series. This is a book that you don't dare spoil, so my review is brief. ⬇

#DoubleSpin for February

Nelnjali If you love the other Stormlight books, then I think you'll love this one. It feels different in ways from the others and is a bit slower, but overall it is just as thought-provoking and enjoyable. I can't wait to see where the series goes from here. 4y
LazyOwl Glad you enjoyed. I loved ROW as well, a few interesting reveals in this one. 4y

Despite my frustrations with Sanderson's lack of finesse at the sentence level, the payoff at the end of this book is truly great. I for sure cried down the stretch. Most of the big twists are easily foreseeable, unlike the previous books in the series. Now just three years waiting for the next one.
