Hidden Depths | Ann Cleeves

Hidden Depths is the third book in Ann Cleeves Vera Stanhope series which is now a major ITV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn, VERA. A hot summer on the Northumberland coast and Julie Armstrong arrives home from a night out to find her son strangled, laid out in a bath of water and covered with wild flowers. This stylized murder scene has Inspector Vera Stanhope intrigued. But then another body is discovered in a rock pool, the corpse again strewn with flowers. Vera must work quickly to find this killer who is making art out of death. As local residents are forced to share their deepest, darkest secrets, the killer watches, waits and plans to prepare another beautiful, watery grave . . . Also available in the Vera Stanhope series are The Crow Trap, Telling Tales, Silent Voices and The Glass Room. Ann Cleeves Shetland series (BBC television drama SHETLAND) contains five titles, of which Dead Water is the most recent.

I‘m a big fan of the Ann Cleeves Vera series (although I do like the Shetland series even more). I really like how unapologetically grumpy and terse and fixated Vera is. I‘m almost finished the tv series as well, which differs from the books while still retaining the heart of who Vera is.

Number 3 in the Vera Stanhope books - I am so loving this series!
Spent the weekend at a friend‘s holiday house in Mangawhai which is about 90 minutes north of Auckland. This is the sun shining on the estuary as we took a morning walk. Didn‘t get much reading in but lots of walking, buying artisan products at the market and too much wine and cheese! ☀️❤️ #winterweekend

andrew61 You can never have too much wine and cheese Paula. Lovely photo. 1y
TrishB Lovely ❤️ and I‘ve just read number 10 in this series! 1y

Centique @Suet624 wow! Thats incredible - he must have seen a lot more of NZ than i have! And be very fit and adventurous 🙌 1y

Still slowly making my way through this series. I have liked each book more as I get to know Vera better. I do miss the Shetland setting of the Perez series but I am becoming a fan.

Julie Armstrong comes home after a night out and finds her son dead in the bathtub with flowers scattered over the water. He was strangled, not drowned. DCI Vera Stanhope investigates.

More like TV Vera than the earlier books.

Another cleverly written outing with Vera. I kept changing my mind about the murderer and still got it wrong.

I found the plot of this one just a little bit too weird for my tastes in some way...it seems a little more novelistic than I recall the first two books being. But I like Vera as a character and the way this series is told, so I would just call this one "less good". And I have requested the next book in the series already ?

Walked 2miles this morning😃 staying hydrated.
Later stopped at Starbucks for a short read while waiting fir my son. This is the Vera Stanhope series. I am so enjoying this querulous, very human detective, portrayed with warts & all. Sometimes her behavior does not make me like her in the moment but somehow, she has my sympathy. This is #3 in the series.

Getting my Vera fix! Feel like I haven‘t had time to give this a proper reading! Also...I feel so guilty! I‘m trying to economize and about 30 minutes ago, I just bought the Kindle Oasis. Should be here Friday. Kind of already having buyer‘s remorse because I own a Kindle Voyage and it works perfectly! I was just honestly sold on Audible and the waterproof feature. Sigh. No self-control what-so-eva!

Cathythoughts I like the sound of this Kindle Oasis & I have a birthday next month 🤔🤔🤔. Thankyou for sharing this & enjoy 😉 7y
Kaye Can you let us know how they compare and if you like one over the other after using them awhile ? I‘ve never had either of those but I think every other Kindle version since the first one came out. I know what you mean about buyers remorse. Books are the one area I could improve on. (edited) 7y
minkyb Been there, done that with too many things. That said, I really want an oasis. I keep dropping hints and no response. I will live vicariously through you for now. 7y

EvieBee @Cathythoughts you are very welcome! 🤓 7y
EvieBee @Kaye I will for sure. Most of the reviews I read said that the newer Kindle without the backlight (which also does Audible books) was better as far as battery life. So I‘ll be watching out for that. (edited) 7y
EvieBee @minkyb Lol! I kept dropping hints and nada! So I got online to “investigate” and found that the price recently dropped. It‘s now $249! But I‘ll keep you posted. I may not keep it. The reviews have been brutal for those that aren‘t 100% sold on it. 7y
Zelma You could just sell you old one. That‘s what I do whenever I upgrade my ereader; at least I get a few dollars back toward the new one. 7y
EvieBee @rubyslippersreads @kaye Sorry, I meant the Kindle before the Paperwhite. Not sure what generation, but the newest one. It doesn‘t have a backlight though. They‘re on sale for $79. (edited) 7y

I watched my first episode of Vera last night and felt I had to try one of the novels straight away - sometimes I need a face to the character and I loved Brenda Blethyn's portrayal. Very much enjoying the book too!
