From bestselling author Natalie D. Richards comes a pulse-pounding new thriller about a blizzardy road trip that turns into a disaster. She never should've accepted that ride... Mira needs to get home for the holidays. Badly. But when an incoming blizzard results in a canceled layover, it looks like Mira might get stuck at the Philadelphia airport indefinitely. Until Harper, Mira's glamorous seatmate from her initial flight, comes to the rescue. Harper and her three friends are renting a car to get home and can drop Mira off on the way. But as the drive progresses, the weather conditions quickly turn perilous. And Mira realizes the four other passengers she's stuck with don't actually know one another--they're all strangers. As one by one, they start to turn on each other, Mira wonders: Is one of the other passengers intentionally sabotaging this trip? And, if so, is it possible to stop them before this claustrophobic, anxiety-inducing ride becomes fatal?

This was an okay teen thriller that I really sped through. No big surprises, but entertaining enough.
What I did love was the atmosphere. I felt the cold & snow, the carsickness. I used to drive from Scranton to school in the Poconos on I-80. I‘ve done 360s on that highway, so their struggles driving through the blizzard rang true.
Living in Virginia now & missing the snow, this was a nice treat to read w/ cocoa on this rainy day.
So it‘s a pick.

Soubhiville Cute mug! 1w
jitteryjane724 So you're saying a Pennsylvanian would be entertained? I may have to check it out! 1w
rubyslippersreads I‘m not sure I want to experience carsickness, even secondhand. (It was the bane of my existence as a kid. 🤢) 1w
MaleficentBookDragon @jitteryjane724 I certainly was. I also had anxious flashbacks of being stuck on a highway overnight once on I84 driving from New York back to PA! 😱 7d
MaleficentBookDragon @rubyslippersreads me too. I still get carsick, airsick, seasick, bussick, trainsick, etc. 🤢🤮 But a Dramamine works great. 😴😹 7d

I definitely was in the middle with this book. The setting was really well done. It definitely made you feel like you were truly in it. But, it felt a little bit unbelievable and the ending was predictable in my opinion. There was as a lot I questioned and I felt like it built up to exactly what I thought was going to happen. So, it wasn‘t terrible, but it wasn‘t my favorite.

Waiting at the emergency vet. My sister‘s rescue dogs attacked each other today. It was very frightening trying to separate them.

monalyisha Ugh, that sounds scary & stressful. Poor little pups (and humans). Sending good thoughts! 2w
lil1inblue Eep! I hope everyone is ok - dogs and humans alike. 💓 2w
Ruthiella Ah yes. This has happened with my sister‘s dogs TWICE! I send you patience and strength. ❤️ 2w

JamieArc This happened to my parents‘ dogs who were sisters, a couple of times. They ended up having to keep the dogs separate in their home. It was both scary and a bit heartbreaking. Light to your family. 2w
LeahBergen Oh no! 😬 2w
Zuhkeeyah Oh no 😟 I hope they're both okay. 2w
Avanders Oh no! 😟 I hope everyone is ok! 2w
MaleficentBookDragon @Avanders it was intense. We pulled them apart & there was blood all over the floor, the dog I was holding, & me. One ended up with 7 puncture wounds on her face, leg and shoulder. Thankfully the jugular was missed or it could have ended much worse. We are having one person stay with each dog all the time and limited contact with each other. They are usually very sweet animals but we really don‘t know what kind of situation they came from. 2w
Avanders Awww that sounds awful 😢 I‘m so glad to hear it wasn‘t worse! 🥹♥️ 2w
MaleficentBookDragon @Avanders they seem good now, but subdued. We‘ve decided to have one go for more involved training than what they‘ve been doing. I keep telling her that she‘s going to military school now. 😁 They are very sweet and loving dogs, but you never know what happened to them before they got adopted. They are around 7 years old and they are still relatively unknown to us. They are big and strong. We need to keep an eye on them. 2w
Avanders @MaleficentBookDragon no absolutely— the fact that they fought each other could very well indicate a history of dog fighting 😞 I‘m sure they‘re so happy to be in a good environment now!! 🤗 2w

I don't know if it's because of all the thriller novels and movies I read and watched in my teens in the 90s, but YA novel Five Total Strangers provided me with some wicked nostalgia. The suspense, the cliff-hanger chapters, the feelings of suspicion about everyone...

Good read 📚

Oh my stars! What a ride this book was! It kept me guessing the whole way through about who was lying, who was telling the truth, who was dangerous and who was just along for the ride. I have read the trapped in a storm books before, but this one with them trapped in a car - added a whole new level! Love it from start to finish! Highly recommend!

Book 9
This was not a good thriller. It could be written in only 200 pages instead of 300, maybe less. So predictable from the beginning. That ending was so abrupt. I‘m telling you can know who was the responsible from the beginning of the story🙄2⭐️Not much success in my reading this month😬

This book kept me on my toes the entire time. The author never lets you settle on a suspect. The second you think you figured it out, she rips the away suspicion and and singles out another character. This was an amazing book, I can‘t wait to read more of her works!

Mira‘s plane to Pittsburgh is cancelled due to a blizzard, so she is traveling in a vehicle with four strangers. One of them is making sure they don‘t make it to their destination.

I was not a fan of this book. I didn‘t like the characters. I knew who was sabotaging the trip way before they were revealed; it was no surprise.

4✨This was really well thought out. It went back and forth for all the characters being the creepy crazy one. I had a feeling I knew, but still was struggling with being sure. When you just want to get home to your family for Christmas and all planes are grounded. Five strangers rent a car to get themselves home, but not everyone is who they appear. #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleigher @StayCurious

I didn't love this book, which is probably partly because I don't love thrillers. I listened to this because it was a Hoopla Bonus Borrow. It follows 5 strangers who think it's a good idea to brave a bad blizzard to drive home in a rental car so they can make it home by christmas. Some recations and assumptions felt weird, especially for strangers, and the characters felt kind of cookie cutter to me. Content warnings for stalking and drug use.

Kimberlone I thought it was pretty meh? 3y

Book 137

I read Five Total Strangers because it was the Big Library Read. Five strangers that meet at the airport, rent a car to get home for Christmas. The road conditions are terrible and things start disappearing. The characters aren't compelling. The story could have been more suspenseful; I almost DNF. The bad guy was a surprise but the book isn't recommendable. 2.5 stars

I read this book as part of the “Big Library Read”. I found it entertaining. The group was in a situation that I hope to never find myself in. I can‘t say that I agreed with all of the decisions that the protagonist made. The end was a bit predictable. I‘m not sure why the library chose this book for their campaign, however ; I‘m glad that I read it.

High school senior Mira is trying to get home for Christmas, but a blizzard closes down the airport. Her seat mate on her prior flight and a group of friends are renting a car, so Mira decides to go with them. Only, turns out they don‘t know each other at all. Then things get scary. There‘s some great tension building here, and well-written vehicular scares, but it hinges on a premise I didn‘t buy and the red herrings are poorly done.

I didn't mind this book at the beginning, I was enjoying it. But it wasn't really thrilling at all. And the ending was so anticlimactic, and it just ends. No explanation of why anything happened or what happened to the others. Nothing. Just done. And for all that build up for that ending? Soooo disappointed. 1.5/5 stars.

Received this package from Lauren Metz today. @Jadams1776 sent Sweet Heart to Lauren a month ago and I mailed her the other 3 books a month ago. I sent a note with Home Before Dark as I was giving her that book. It doesn‘t look like she read any of these books. There was no markings or messages in the package from her. Has she quit Litsy for some reason? Does anyone know?

suvata This is very strange. Maybe you should try to reach out to her through email. 4y

Mira realizes as she gets in the car that fellow travelers are all total strangers. And every one of them is hiding something. Roads go from slippery to terrifying. People's belongings are mysteriously disappearing.

EadieB Someone in the car is clearly lying, and may even be sabotaging the trip―but why? And can Mira make it home alive, or will this nightmare drive turn fatal? I enjoyed this book and had to quickly read to the end to find out what was going on. The ending was not a total surprise but there were moments of suspense that unnerved me. I would definitely read another book by Richards and I would recommend this book to those who love YA mystery books. 4y
