Fable: A Novel | Adrienne Young
42 posts | 43 read | 43 to read
Filled with all of the action, emotion, and lyrical writing that brought readers to Sky in the Deep, New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns with Fable, the first book in this new captivating duology. Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men. As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. Its been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father. But her fathers rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn't who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they're going to stay alive.

A bit wordy & slow - but a pleasant read. Romance was fairly tame, which I appreciate.

The story starts with an abandoned girl who dives for gems & food to survive on an island of thieves. She has to get off the island to find the father who abandoned her so he can give her what he owes her. Along the way, she searches for love & a place to call home. If you are looking for a book that has strong pirate vibes & a little romance, this is it!

This month‘s book club pick! I was wanting to read a YA novel, so this came at the perfect time. It would probably be categorized as fantasy, but really it‘s a pirate genre. 🏴‍☠️ For real! So if you like YA, pirate stories, and strong female leads, then this will be up your alley.

This was a great pirate story. Fable is left on the island Jevel by her father and has to fight and trade her way back to him in order to prove herself. She makes a deal with ship captain West but they encounter dangerous obstacles and enemies on their journey through the Narrows.
I liked the characters in West's crew. They all have a strong bond and are distrustful of Fable when all she wants is to belong.

A rich story that danced across the pages, Fable has an old world vibe with a folk tale feel. It's an adventure about an abandoned girl who has lived life on the sea. Her search for her estranged father leads her to a new family and inheritance. A book of made up places, gems, pirates and yes, love. YA

What can I say about Fable besides that it‘s a very fitting book for me! YA fantasy with a bit of adventure, a bit of romance, and a lot of pirate action. The found family aspect in this book is something I really loved as well!

This was a good book. I really enjoyed it. I loved Fable. The author did a great job of making her a well rounded character. She fit the story well and I liked following along with her.

The ship setting was awesome. It wasn‘t a pirate ship which was a fun twist. And it felt quite accurate and believable.

I liked all the characters, I liked the ships, I liked the setting. I liked this book. And I‘m looking forward to the second one.

Young has created a new world that you crash into with every wave from the storms. The characters are slowly unfurled with promise of much more to come. Fable is a heroine you urge on, committed to know what will come next for her. This is a great YA novel & the next instalment 'Namesake' has much promise

I really enjoyed this series, and devoured it in about 3 days. I did prefer the first book, since it focused more on Fable‘s journey and her integration into the Marigold‘s crew. The second book gets a bit ambitious with its bigger, political plot line and many added characters, and lost me a little bit when the focus shifts away from the high seas adventures and core characters. The central romance was a bit rushed, but still worked for me.

Foxnorth sounds cool. 4y
swynn Just finished the first, looking forward to the second. Glad to hear it holds up. 4y
Kimberlone @swynn I do think the first is better, but the sequel definitely still stands up! 4y

I‘m giving this a Pick rating because I love this cover and the read was enjoyable, I‘m just not sure that there was anything really stellar about it. It did end on a cliffhanger and I kind of want to know how this ends.

Life interrupted progress on the #20in4 readathon, but I did finish this YA fantasy about a sea merchant's daughter who was abandoned to fend for herself after her mother died. A couple of events didn't make sense to me, and the romance felt forced, but It's fun enough that I'll seek out the sequel.

And I'm calling this my time for the readathon. Thanks for organizing, @Andrew65 !

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve been a fan of Adrienne Young since her “Sky in the Deep”, and I found that this was a good, quick read. I enjoyed the plot and the characters, however I felt that Fable‘s relationship with West was a bit rushed at the end and a bit abrupt. The book ends in a cliffhanger, and I‘ll definitely have to read the sequel!

This was... SO EFFING GOOD. A world without any magic (hallelujah) but with great world-building, a romance that wasn‘t the center of the plot, interesting side characters and a heroine you can love easily.

I‘m downloading the sequel immediately.

Liatrek Just finished both books back to back and absolutely loved it! 4y
thewallflower0707 @Liatrek I did too! I thought, after years of reading almost exclusively YA and then finally starting to branch out in 2020, I knew all the YA tropes. However, this short series convinced me that there are still some gems out there! 4y

This book was really good, I liked the plot and the overall pirate vibe to this book. The diving and world building was amazing, I could picture all of the reefs and storms so clearly, the author really did a great job with descriptions. I loved all our characters, especially the MC Fable, she is such a big hearted character in a tough world. I loved the slow burn romance too. I loved the cliffhanger at the end, I've already pre-ordered book 2⚓

How much do you love this cover? And the book itself is also great. I couldn't put this down. And I meant to. I was just going to read about half and then wait for the #BookSpin numbers.

Fable is left on an island by her father. And he basically tells her that if she can survive he'll give her something. Great YA fantasy. Pirates.
