Story of Ferdinand (Turtleback School & Library)
Story of Ferdinand (Turtleback School & Library) | Munro Leaf
A true classic, this tale of a sweet, gentle bull named Ferdinand has enchanted readers, young and old alike, since it was first published by Viking Press in 1936. All the other bulls would run and jump and butt their heads together. But Ferdinand would rather sit and smell the flowers than fight. And his pacifist tendencies remain intact even when he is picked for the bullfights in Madrid. With the original black-and-white drawings enhanced by subtle watercolor washes in full-color, plus the complete original text, this 8 x 8 edition will introduce lovable Ferdinand to a whole new audience.

Probably not meant to be suspenseful, but though I've heard of it, I never knew the ending. I was worried there for a moment! Again, great art, sprinkling of satire, beautiful message.

#MarchMagic Day 23: This is my #FavoriteClassic children‘s book. While the other bulls are scrambling all over each other to be picked for the bull fights in Madrid, Ferdinand couldn‘t really care less. He would amble steadily and slowly, absorbed in his own imaginings. My review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-5oD

Not really. My immigrant mom preferred to tell me oral stories instead of reading. I really enjoyed her version of fairy tale stories.

My earliest memory of reading a book with someone will be at school during small group for EL students. The tagged book was one my favorites.

I used to always get this one and Lambert the Sheepish Lion mixed up when I was a kid. Ferdinand is the sweetest, but I love that he is also hard core when it comes to doing what he wants. So much tougher than going along with the crowd. You sniff your flowers, Ferdinand. Get on with your badass self.

Re-read this classic on my drive back home from LA. This beautiful story with a timeless message never gets old. I never read this as a child (my mom read me mostly korean folktales), but happy I read it when I got older. I‘ll keep coming back to it again and again.

This book is fiction. I would do a choral reading for this book. This story is about a bull that is kind and would rather smell flowers than participate in a bullfight. Everyone sees him as different and not normal. This book is perfect to show students that not everyone is the same and it is okay to be different.

DoonTheGoon @IamIamIam The copy I enjoyed belonged to my father when he was a child. It was printed on this paper that was almost like canvas, and was so tattered and torn and loved!!! Farm life is great - but don't get me started about chores!!! 😂 6y

I took my munchkin and his friend to see Ferdinand. She fell asleep 🤦🏼‍♀️ but he and I both cried (its fine). I thought of how much I loved this book as a kid, and I think the movie captured that same spirit. Plus, as my son said as we were leaving the theater, it had an important message that all of us could learn from.

Modern Fantasy
#UCFWalterslit
Ferdinand the bull is like none other in the pasture. At the very moment the men came to the pasture to find the fiercest bull they happen to see Ferdinand as he was being stung by a bee. What a great story to tell children you don‘t have to be like everybody else to be happy it‘s OK to be different than what people think you are.

The Story of Ferdinand is a F RA picture book written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson. This is a book about a bull named Ferdinand, who would rather sit and smell the flowers than fight like everyone else. I would use UDL principle 9.3 to develop self-assessment and reflection. I would also use ESOL strategy 2 to promote cooperation. I would discuss with the students if you would be like Ferdinand or the other bulls. #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak https://tc2.ca/pdf/TheStoryofFerdinand.pdf this resource gives a lesson plan that focuses on background knowledge, jumping to conclusions, and synthesizing ideas. It gives students a chance to explain how a bull “should” be and how Ferdinand is. It also has the students gives advice for the 5 men who took Ferdinand to fight. 7y

The Story of Ferdinand is a F book about a bull named Ferdinand, who would rather sit and smell flowers than fight, and would be perfect for a RA. Ferdinand's story can help teach students to be true to themselves, and that it's okay to be different. The book also uses some Spanish words which can be a great learning opportunity for all students to broaden their vocabulary. https://www.teachervision.com/story-ferdinand-activities

EricaG The website has flash cards to help students learn the Spanish words from the story. It also had an activity called Ferdinand's Happiness Pasture where students can draw pictures of what makes them happy on a paper flower and then glue in on a "pasture" to hang up. 7y
EricaG The flash cards can be used to meet UDL 2.4- promote understanding across languages and 3.1- supply background knowledge. And EL 20- list the most important words you plan to use and possibly EL 24- incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in the curriculum. #UCFLAE3414F17 7y
ashley.v I love this book. I like how it teaches kids to be true themselves and to appreciate the little things. 7y

MorganH This book is so cute and its coming out in theaters soon! The flash cards idea is so cool! 7y
CaseyL I love the connection that this book has to EL 20 and how the website you linked supports the words that are used in the book. This has always been one of my favorite books and I'm so excited for the movie! The way that it encourages children to be themselves is amazing. 7y
DrSpalding I saw the poster at the movie theater! This book makes me think of the movie The Blind Side… Anyone else? Vocabulary is so important. Nice resource to assist students in understanding both English and Spanish words. 7y

Aaaand just for the hell of it, here is my daughter after the x-ray the GI sent her for. I handed her her T-Rex to distract her while the tech made sure she didn't need to take a 2nd x-ray. She did really well and the GI was nice and respectful of us. He said Parker looked healthy and didn't seem concerned with anything. Eased my anxiety a lot. #babiesoflitsy #litsykids #girlslikedinosaurstoo

BookDragonNotWorm I still love dinosaurs! Hope she feels better soon. 8y
Vexingcircumstance @BookDragonNotWorm she's fine. She has a neurological condition and food allergies and just has to go to a lot of specialists but she's actually doing really well and the GI said she looked healthy and we were doing well working around her issues and helping her adapt. :) (edited) 8y
BookDragonNotWorm That's great! Glad to hear she's well :) 8y

Vexingcircumstance I get super anxious taking to her doctors because of some bad experiences in the past with a few of them. I was scared of the GI trying to push us to let them do a feeding tube (a previous neurologist was pushy about it because she's still drinking from a bottle and won't eat anything solid...even though she drinks her prescribed formula fine and 'it's the same thing she would get in a feeding tube) but he wasn't like that at all. Which was a huge 8y
Vexingcircumstance Relief for us. 8y
Cinfhen She's adorable, glad to hear all is well 💕💕 8y
Jinjer Awww if she's getting all the nutrition she needs let the poor child have her bottle! Some doctors...🙄 8y
Vexingcircumstance @Jinjer that's our point exactly. She has food anxiety due to allergies and some sensory issues with textures in her mouth. So anything not in her bottle gags her but she drinks the bottle fine. And is in OT and speech working on the food texture issues and we have been working on easing her anxiety. It just will take time. 8y
Vexingcircumstance But one doctor still thought it made more sense to put her through surgery and infection risk for a feeding tube. Honestly it would probably be easier on us in some ways if she did have one but definitely not best for her. 8y
Jinjer I've worked with enough doctors to know they get paid for doing all these extra, unnecessary procedures. Got away with doing one on my poor 89-yo mother. Your sweet baby will give up the bottle when she's ready!!!! 😡 8y
