Kelly Sue Deconnick uses an intersectional feminist perspective and sci-fi prison setting to satirize patriarchy in our contemporary moment. Combining elements of sports drama and prison drama, Bitch Planet depicts a multiracial team of female inmates, who are the ultimate "non-compliants." Valentine de Landro's art conveys the punk vibes.

Would you like to be enraged, inspired and emotionally exhausted? Have I got the feminist sci-fi graphic novel for you! This is extremely well done, but it definitely hits hard. Will need a break between reading each in the series.

Seemed like a good time to read these, given current events. I needed short reads for #SRP weekly goals, and suddenly all three volumes were available on my library's Libby account, where they previously weren't. Anyway, I gave 3.5 ⭐s to Volume 1, 4 ⭐s to Volume 2, and 4 ⭐s to Triple Feature. Really hope more will be published, given that Issue 10 really leaves you hanging.

As the start of a graphic novel series, this comic is a great insight into dystopian concepts towards gender. A good read

I like the idea of Bitch Planet. A prison planet full of women who get the chance to make a competitive sport team for a deadly game. I just wish the execution is better. The story is all over the place and the pages are full of gratuitous nudity that I just don‘t need or want. I also wish the story flowed better as there are 4 or five storylines going on of affairs, the prison, someone who is tasked to build a new stadium, etc

It was ok, just not my cup of tea. Interesting premise though. I definitely would have ended up on that planet. I wish there was a rating between pick and so-so.

Hour 6 challenge: excuse myself I just woke up. But here is my first and, so far, only tattoo from the incomparable Bitch Planet. I got it done 2 years ago, after I turned 30. I wanted it for at least 5 years before I committed to getting it permanently put on my body. I have no regrets because I will always be noncompliant.

This internet recommendation was on the nose for me. A Handmaid‘s Tale by a more aggressive name will smell as sweet, and the same dystopian gender fuckery drives the comic, in a satire that‘s so real.

The snarky fake ads in this book alone are worth the read. Book is about a future in which non-compliment women are shipped off to a prison planet. The dialogue is brilliant, but the story can be a bit hard to follow. I‘m going to give this another read in a few months.

Thoughtfully crafted and illustrated feminist dystopian "Orange is the New Black." The art and ideas satire the camp of 70s grindhouse and blaxplotation flicks, but never to the detriment of the strong underlying messages. The end began to lose me a bit when the murder sport storyline began, and not enough weight was given to character deaths for me to care much about them. It looks as though the series has since been abandoned, which is a shame.

“They also believed their gods lived on a mountain and that trouble was caused by little men with horse dicks and pan flutes. Don‘t make it clever just ‘cause it‘s old.”

Intersectional feminism. Non compliance. Science fiction. I'm on again off again with comics. But this, I just really appreciate the subtleties, little breadcrumbs.

And here we are, a nod to the handmaids.

1. Tough one...right now I‘d have to say it‘s a Wonder Woman/Black Panther tie.

2. ?

3. I didn‘t read a lot of comics before Litsy, but even then it was Image, and as Litsy has widened my must reads....it‘s still a lot of Image. Walking Dead, Bitch Planet, PaperGirls, Saga! Second place probably would go to Marvel just because I‘m really enjoying the Ms Marvel series at the moment.

Gezemice I am the same, started reading comics mostly because of Litsy (and Goodreads), and the ones you mentioned! 7y

So many Littens who read graphic novels liked this so I decided to check it out. Its world, where women are sent to jail for such crimes as disrespect of male authorities and being old or fat, is anger-inducing, but the story is powerful and I‘m rooting for the inmates of Bitch Planet. I can‘t go on to vol 2 just yet, though; I need something lighter.

The #bandwagon quiz-o-the-week is pretty spot on except it says that I'm not likely to get emotional, or recognize and deal with emotion in others. But this graphic novel gave me plenty of rage, of the kind lately reserved for reading the news, or the bi-monthly watching of Handmaids Tale (any more is too intense for me). Penny was an obv fav, but I didn't realize I'd invested in the other chars-Until the last frame. Satire so sharp it cuts, here.

I am really trying to broaden my horizons with graphic novels and some manga reads. I typically done read anyone these. However lately I have read the March series by John Lewis and Locke and Key by Joe Hill and loved both. So I wanna hear, what graphic novels do you love and recommend I try?

TsundokuAleax I love Monstress and Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur. I have also enjoyed Wayward and Skull Kickers (especially if you are into RPG or tabletop gaming). Ms. Marvel is also fun and timely. I am sure I will think of others. If you have a good comic shop nearby, they can help. 7y
LiteraryinPA Depending on if you like things for younger audiences, I recommend Roller Girl and the Phoebe and her Unicorn series. 7y
Karkar I like Giant Days, Saga, Chew, I Hate Fairyland, Gwenpoole 7y

The spice shaker of comic books selected this for me to read. I'm pretty excited. I've been looking forward to giving this series a try.

I'm trying to keep up with my reading this month, but I'm afraid I won't read anywhere near where I planned. Life keeps trying to knock me down. First all the crap with my ex, then my job situation, now more ex-fiancee crap.

I'm hoping I can push through as I'm really excited about my planned reading.

“Seduction and disappointment.”
It gives me the worst sort of chills to read this “criminal act” and think, I could absolutely see that in our future right now. When men popularize bullshit like “friendzone,” and don‘t understand that “I don‘t want to” doesn‘t mean “aggressively try again in five minutes,” this is what we‘re headed for.
