Closed Casket: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery
Closed Casket: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery | Agatha Christie, Sophie Hannah
The world's most famous detective returns in this ingenious, stylish, and altogether delicious mystery from the author of the instant bestseller The Monogram Murders ("I was thrilled" -- Gillian Flynn)."What I intend to say to you will come as a shock..."With these words, Lady Athelinda Playford -- one of the world's most beloved children's authors -- springs a surprise on the lawyer entrusted with her will. As guests arrive for a party at her Irish mansion, Lady Playford has decided to cut off her two children without a penny . . . and leave her vast fortune to someone else: an invalid who has only weeks to live.Among Lady Playford's visitorsare two strangers: the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and Inspector Edward Catchpool of Scotland Yard. Neither knows why he has been invited -- until Poirot begins to wonder if Lady Playford expects a murder. But why does she seem so determined to provoke a killer? And why -- when the crime is committed despite Poirot's best efforts to stop it -- does the identity of the victim make no sense at all?Addictive, ferociously clever, and packed with clues, wit, and murder, Closed Casket is a triumph from the author whose work is "as tricky as anything written by Agatha Christie" (Alexander McCall Smith, The New York Times Book Review)."

She certainly has Poirot voice to a tee but the plot again was a bit unnecessarily convoluted although less so than book 1. I‘m not feeling her Catchpool character at all. Too much of the book is given over to him and he doesn‘t seem to like Hercule v much. Set in West Cork in 1929 when Ireland was “The free state” and not the Republic didn‘t make a jot of a difference to the story which to me was a lost opportunity.

Read this because the author based one of the characters on AJ Finn (author of Woman in the Window). Plot is bonkers but knowing that real-world inspiration made it fun.

A toss up between a pick and a so-so for me but ultimately I did get surprised by the murderer so it gets a pick. A bit slow to start and so many characters were introduced immediately that I was writing them down to keep track. I found I wasn‘t paying attention in parts and had to reread over some pages which meant that it didn‘t grab me as an AG book usually does but it was skillfully written and the AH-HA moment got me in the end.

I really like these “new Poirot” books. The Hastings stand-in is Catchpole, and he‘s significantly less stupid in this second book. (It always made me crazy how clueless Hastings always was.) Classic family melodrama with a good helping of secrets and lies.

The whole article is a wild ride about Dan Mallory aka AJ Finn, author of the enormously successful Woman in the Window. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-dece...

A much better book than the previous one, it has a much tighter plot and character improvements. Catchpool is nowhere near as dimwitted (that role reserved for a local policeman this time), and the Playfords are an entertainingly ghastly lot.

Finished this on my #audiowalk and I really enjoyed it! Seems people are upset it's not "Christie" but I don't think it should be. I think the characters were enjoyable, the plot fun and twisty as per genre standards, and I liked the more modern sententiments the characters had.

I liked this one, but didn‘t love it. I‘d give it three and a half stars. The plot was convoluted enough to be worthy of Agatha Christie, and it kept me interested. I felt like I wanted more Hercule Poirot in it, as he is one of my favorite literary characters. Overall I enjoyed it enough to check out others in this series.

My last book in the 2017 and the first one in 2018.
In spite of some things that I didn‘t like, especially how the narrator is introduced in the beginning of the story, it is a nice cozy mystery book, with enough interesting characters, which are of course all potential killers, and sufficiently intriguing plot that I read it in two seatings .⭐️⭐⭐ from me, but it is still🤘 if you want some easy, uncomplicated story. #booked2018 #cozymystery

A little upside downside here... Hannah has done quite well to mimic Christie's Poirot character. The dialogue and actions from Poirot are familiar, even evolved perhaps. But, the plot was not the perfect combination of comfortable suspense and surprise that I turn to Christie for. One of the characters here even defends her own slightly clumsy mystery stories. So, I'm happy there are more Poirot novels, but there's a small crack in the universe.

Sometimes it‘s better to let sleeping dogs lie, or dead writers stay dead. Closed Casket by Sophie Hannah, writing as Agatha Christie, is a good example of the latter. When I found myself unable to get through more than one chapter at time before starting to yawn, I should have realized it wasn‘t me. The more I read, the less I liked this story. See http://itsallaboutthebook.org for a full review.

DGRachel My mom, a huge Christie fan, actually got angry when she saw this book at B&N and very emphatically said Ms. Christie killed Poirot off specifically to avoid this kind of thing. I think it's sad when an author's wishes aren't honored. 8y
minkyb I appreciated reading this review. 8y
hlgreenfield I must say I dislike this book even though I never read it - it just makes me so angry that it was written! I love Poirot - one of my favourite characters and the books that got me into crime fiction and usually I am not opposed to new writers coming along and writing an old character, however Agatha Christie specifically killed him off so that this wouldn't happen. It just seems disrespectful of her wishes! Thanks for the nice review 😃 8y

Tried several times to get into this but just couldn't. Once upon a time I would have read to the end. Not anymore. Too many other books waiting to be read! I could hear Poirot speaking in my head--- the TV version and that got a bit annoying. I much prefer reading the real Agatha Christie.
