Fiery Cross (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Fiery Cross (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Diana Gabaldon
Crossing the boundaries of genre with its unrivalled storytelling, Diana Gabaldon's new novel is a gift both to her millions of loyal fans and to the lucky readers who have yet to discover her. In the ten years since her extraordinary debut novel, Outlander, was published, beloved author Diana Gabaldon has entertained scores of readers with her heart-stirring stories and remarkable characters. The four volumes of her bestselling saga, featuring eighteenth-century Scotsman James Fraser and his twentieth-century, time-travelling wife, Claire Randall, boasts nearly 5 million copies in the U.S. The story of Outlander begins just after the Second World War, when a British field nurse named Claire Randall walks through a cleft stone in the Scottish highlands and is transported back some two hundred years to 1743. Here, now, is The Fiery Cross, the eagerly awaited fifth volume in this remarkable, award-winning series of historical novels. The year is 1771, and war is approaching. Jamie Fraser's wife has told him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy--a time-traveller's certain knowledge. To break his oath to the Crown will brand him a traitor; to keep it is certain doom. Jamie Fraser stands in the shadow of the fiery cross--a standard that leads nowhere but to the bloody brink of war.

Chapter a day re-read is well into the second half of the series. I keep hoping there will be an announcement of the next book that coincides with me finishing, but I know that's not realistic. #30-2024

I absolutely, positively canNOT believe I almost forgot to post that I finally finished this long winded tale. Thank goodness I snagged a last pic as a final goodbye before I brought it back to the library. So far, this one has been the hardest in the series for me. The mundane, every day life descriptions were too much and far away from the normal historical and even romantic sides it usually has. A brutal one for me but I DID IT! 🤣👏🏼

July was a HUGE success. 9 books read; 7 of which got cleaned off my bookshelf 👏🏼 and 2 were 300 page sections of The Fiery Cross. One section left and that tome of a book is DONE. Both my #bookspin and #doublespin books were included! Woohoo!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Fabulous read!!! 2y

Whilst The Fiery Cross is still my demise and I only completed one section of it, June was extremely successful! End of school chaos didn‘t keep me from getting 2, #bookspinbingos and reading 7 books, including my #doublespin book Reminders of Him. I‘ll take it as a big win and can‘t wait to crush July! 🤓📚

Disappointed in my May progress. Where did May even go? 🤷🏻‍♀️ not sure it‘ll happen with the chaos of school ending BUT hoping for a better month in June. Here is my #bookspin #doublespin in no particular order, yet. The tagged book his literally been the longest revolving book for me..EVER. Hoping to make more of a dent this month and clear some of my bookshelf. Happy almost June!

Outlander book #5. I‘m not even sure how to describe this. So much happens. It‘s a continuation of Claire & Jamie‘s life together. Homesteading, with tenants, in the back country of North Carolina in the 1770‘s. It‘s fascinating.

Where did February go?! And March?! 🙃🙃🥲 Anywho, I finally conquered this book. I am so glad that I did. Because unexpected things happened that I dared not hope for, and shocking things happened that left me in all the feels. Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger, little Jemmy, Ian, and the rest of Fraser‘s Ridge are ❤️❤️🥹😛🥲🥹 in the best of way. #outlander #timetravel #chunker #bigbook #done 🎉

My first finished fiction book of 2022! In between quilting projects & reading non-fiction, this chunkster took a while! Not my favorite in the series but I‘m still continuing! Have the next one by my elbow but will wait to start it. Wanted to point out a historical discrepancy here. In colonial America, people didn‘t piece together quilts using cut-up fabrics. Fabrics were too precious, so quilts were whole-cloth using one piece for the top! 👇

ValerieAndBooks Cont‘ it‘s possible scraps were sewn together using pieces of leftover whole cloth fabric but this story indicates it was pre-planned — and if it was in blues and creams, then the blue fabrics would have been dyed with indigo. Not an easy undertaking. 3y

What is it about leftover Chinese food that always perks me up? 🥲🥰 My husband spoiled me over the weekend. We got to go to a park, Chinese food, and a bookstore (#bookhaul post coming)!! This is my currently read, and the final book I finished the first time around. The rest will be new territory. #currentlyreading #outlander #timetravel

I‘ve been an Outlander fan through books 1-4, but I‘m about ready to give up on this book for at least the third time and for good! It‘s just a series of meandering vignettes. I‘ve tried it in print and audiobook. This time I made it through 34 1/2 of the 55 1/2 hours and it‘s been tedious and torturous. Anyone have any reason for me to continue? And BTW, I‘m not a fan of the TV series.

TheSpineView This is the same point I stopped in the series. I just couldn't make myself go any further. 3y

I am debating moving my 'read' date to December 31st. I feel like I'm cheating by finishing it today and adding it to my 2022 challenge. I've been working on it for 22 days and this snow really made the last several chapters possible. 🙃 I have not left my house in 8 days. 8 being an estimate. I don't really remember. The rain is finally washing it all away. Either way is done. Do I really want to read the next book? 🤔

Suet624 I couldn‘t get past the first one. 3y

BooksNBowls I am STRUGGLING with this one. It‘s taking me forever. I‘ve been working on this one for months and I‘m barely half way through. 3y
mandarchy @BooksNBowls I get frustrated by how she splits ideas or conversations with long explanations or descriptions. Or she names so many people, you don't know if she's introducing a new character or just naming someone insignificant. In actually reading it for the 2nd time and it is making more sense. 3y
mandarchy I just realized that the image is not the tagged book. December was a blur. I'm hesitating to jump into the next book. I need a break. But I can't stop wondering what Jamie and Claire are doing right now... 3y
BooksNBowls @mandarchy im taking a break right now I‘m about 40% done but I‘ll probably pick it back up in a couple weeks 3y

Just reached Christmas day on the Ridge. I think this is my least favorite book in the series, but the episode at the Beardsley is so creepy it makes up for it.

I have FINALLY finished this after a year and a month of reading on and off!! My least favorite so far in the series, but that‘s not to say I still didn‘t love it! Pretty slow and confusing with so many names at the beginning 200+ pages, and a bit boring throughout.

Book 5 in the Outlander series felt like an 18th century soap. I still enjoyed the familiarity of the characters, but the story feels far removed from where it started - a woman thrown back into time, Highlands, war with (let's be honest) the ultimate romatic hero. But characters are acclimatized to their living conditions, all getting on a bit and - I dunno, it just lacked a bit of fire in its belly! Second half much better than the first half.

Bailedbailed

I‘ve been terrible at reading this year. I love the show but had to keep renewing this book as I‘ve had to do a lot this year. I never used to bail on books. I blame the pandemic or maybe the fact that I‘ve survived one as to why I allow myself to bail more 😂🤷‍♀️ Maybe I will finish this one day. It was just much slower than the others I‘ve read for some reason.

New week, new book - don't disturb me, I'll resurface whem I'm done. Series is quite heavily criticised but it's pure unadulterated fantasy - not advised for those seeking authenticity - time travel, the Loch Ness Monster, continuity errors - that's not what it's about at all!
Outlander binge book 5 begins...... ☕🍰👌😁📖

RavenclawOwlCat Can you explain what you mean by the errors? 4y
danni0075 Dates not quite correct, bit of poetic licence used when depicting historical characters, fictional settings BUT not the reason I read these. I read them because I love the concept, the characterisation and am enthralled by the adventures. If I wanted historical fact I'd go for Simon Schama - A History of Britain 4y
