An interesting text that deals little with the actual picture itself and more on the psychology of the human lust for pleasure without conscious.

I can‘t wait to discuss the book at club next week.

Just finished listening to the tagged book. Very interesting read. They mentioned in the story about a book poisoning someone. So I thought, could this happen? I decided to come on here and ask all of u lovely littens. What do you think?

BookLove4Ever When I read that book I thought he was such a little punk. 😂 Books can put me in a good mood or bad mood depending on the book. Otherwise people see what they want to see. 🤷‍♀️ 10mo
shortsarahrose I haven‘t read Dorian Grey, so I can‘t speak to how they mean poison, but in the 19th century, some book bindings actually contained arsenic! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison_Book_Project#:~:text=P.... 10mo

4.3⭐️ I was introduced to Serial Reader @Roary47 which is what I‘m using to complete my classic countdown for the year. I really like how it breaks down the classic by issues that you read once a day. I have always wanted to read this book in super excited that I finished my last issue tonight. Looking forward to my next classic February.

My all time favourite book, I‘m obsessed with the language and beauty of the writing. I even have an Oscar Wilde tattoo!

Runner up is The Power by Naomi Alderman. Both ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ in my book.

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #alphabetgame #letterP

truthinfiction I left both of these after beginning. Although, I intend to pick back up Dorian Gray sometime soon. 2y
Kitta @truthinfiction everyone is different, there‘s some books people love that I can‘t stand 🤷🏻‍♀️. Although I hope you enjoy Dorian Gray if you pick it up again! 2y
truthinfiction @Kitta Thanks, I think I will. I did enjoy the book but I wasn't able to follow the philosophical discussions between Dorian and the other pretty boy. So, I left it off to come back to it when I would be better able to comprehend. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I got an assist on my August #LMPBC book when I found a great audio version for free on Audible! I connected more with the first half where there was more of a story and a plot. The second half was more meditative and seemed to hint at rather than describe a lot of the behavior, and I felt less connected to or invested in the characters at that point. Worth a read if you‘re interested in classics.

Twainy Oh no. I have this clothbound classic. 2y
fredthemoose @Twainy It‘s worth a read (or just keeping around for display purposes!)—I just wasn‘t that invested in most of the characters by the end and didn‘t care one way or another what happened. 2y
Twainy I‘m a character reader … I enjoyed the Big Finish radio plays … I bet it ends up a display piece. 2y
Kitta @Twainy this is one of my favourites! Everyone is different though so I‘d say give it a chance. 2y

Read this classic for #LMPBC and it was a really interesting one. A lot to ponder here on what "sin" really is and how self-absorption can change us. I felt like Wilde asked a lot more questions than he answered, but he would probably tell you that his job is to ask questions, not answer them lol
@fredthemoose this one is heading your way today!!

TheAromaofBooks @KristiAhlers - I really had no idea what to expect. My version had what I felt like were a reasonable amount of notes as well, which was helpful - the editor mostly was pointing out differences between the original publication in serial form and what Wilde changed a year later when he published the book as a whole, which turned out to be quite interesting. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - I was so excited to find this edition at the library discard sale earlier this year!! Can't beat a lovely hardcover for a quarter!! 2y

Basic story apart, it's the epigrams we all remember, nearly all courtesy of arch-cynic Lord Henry Wotton, but even leaving those aside (and the best of them manage to be simultaneously hilarious and thought-provoking), the precision of Wilde's descriptions are a joy. Camp as a weekend in Norfolk, of course, but strangely moving.

Undoubtedly, one of my favourite books by my beloved Oscar Wilde. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is a remarkable literary portrait of human vanity in the context of Victorian England. Only Oscar Wilde could depict evil as something beautiful, charming and yet despicable. The film released in 1945 is also highly recommended.
(Image from History Extra)

Celticat I just reread this last month, I love Wilde! I have also been a longtime fan of the movie. 3y
Reyzl @Celticat it‘s nice to find people with the same love for Wilde! His books are unique and can be reread again and again and the movie captures much of the spirit of the book. On another note: Years ago, when I was in Paris, I visited his tomb. I left a white rose, and I kissed the sphinx as the tradition goes. An unforgettable experience. I recommend visiting Dublin too, if you haven‘t done it yet, as well as Oxford. His aura remains there. 3y

I really enjoyed this one, more than I expected!

It was full of wonderful prose, thoughtful exposition, interesting (and at times, annoying) characters, philosophical themes, and was a bit of a horror story as well—at least to me.

Recommend!

SPOILERS FOR DISCUSSION! Just finished Picture of Dorian Grey for the first time and I‘m intrigued by the ending. Generally online I found the idea that when Dorian Grey stabs the portrait he absorbs all the fates of the image including the knife to the heart leaving the picture in tact.

I‘m wondering how many of you have other interpretations or thoughts?

My thoughts in comments. #booktalk

Also counting this for #teamslaughter @Clwojick

ConfessionofaBookaholic Personally I‘m wondering about the idea that they switched places and Dorian Grey is left trapped inside the painting… (edited) 3y

Finally finished Dorian Gray which means it‘s time to go to the bookstore for more books! 🥰

Book was great, again like I said in a previous post I was inspired to read this after watching all of Penny Dreadful. Dorian in the book was more child- like in comparison to the show. Great ending and all around great read. I feel like I get bonus points for reading this during Pride month! 😂

An absolute pick, I couldn't recommend this enough.
Oscar Wilde's writing is simply poetic.
The characters (Lord Henry especially) are fascinating.
The story also pulls you in, even if you already know what is going to happen.

Lets talk about the character Lord Henry: sometimes spitting straight facts (he gets the best lines in the book) and sometimes a no-good boring snooze-fest (no one wants to read through his gossip). Anyways stan Basil Hallward.

The picture of Dorian gray suffers many of the same issues as most the literature of that century. It focuses heavily on waxing philosophies of different characters, such as the quite frankly insufferable Lord Harry, but dances around big events and the meat of the action. There were some sections I liked, but I found myself skimming large chunks of dialogue that just never seemed to progress anything.

This entire book is sturctured to handle a person's fear of getting older. The whole story is about staying young and the characters are anoyingly immature and at the same time they are wishing to stay that way as long as possible. This really wasn't the right book for me. I think with a bit better characters the story would have worked much better.

I learned a few things while listening to this book:

1. Dorian Gray is a spoiled little bitch

3. Simon Callow is the most fantastically dramatic narrator ever!
4. Seriously, Dorian Gray is such a whiny bitch!
