Changing my Doctor Who book from #adaptedforsmallscreen to #hopepunknovel as I was struggling with the prompt and Doctor Who is listed as an example of the genre. Sanditon is replacing it for #adaptedforsmallscreen.

While this wasn‘t completed by Jane Austen, the author who did made a fantastic effort to provide this with Austenesque ending. Bravo “Another Lady”! This also helped close out another #Pantone2022 color prompt. #SnowWhite.

The last book Austen started and never got to finish.

It begins with the Parkers having an accident and being in recovery at the Heywoods. To pay thanks to the help they receive, the Parkets bring the oldest of the Heywood‘s daughter, Charlotte, with them to Sanditon.

Sanditon is a new recreational city that Mr Parker is having build.

So far it‘s about health and sickness, and hypochondriacs. About class and fortunes.

AnneCecilie I‘m sorry we never would get to know where Austen would have taken the story. #DoubleSpin March @TheAromaofBooks #PemberLittens @sprainedbrain 3y
Brooke_H Huge departure from the unfinished novel, but…I highly recommend the TV series also! 3y

Sorry, but this one isn't my cup of tea! 😂

Something has usually happened by now in Jane's novels, this one takes forever to introduce the love plot!

2 3/4 stars, as it's getting slightly interesting when it cuts off!

What an auspicious beginning! It's a shame Jane Austen was unable to finish her tale of Charlotte Heywood and the community of Sanditon 😔 It has all the perfect ingredients and even in the short 12 chapters that exist, she already established her wit and insight into the silliness of human beings. I don't know if I want to read any of the various completed versions or not 🤔. I'll have to give that more thought. #pemberlittens @sprainedbrain

In Ch. 1 of Sanditon, we meet Mr. and Mrs. Parker who are in a minor carriage accident and also who are in the wrong “Willingden”. Mr. Heywood offers to help since Mr. Parker has an ankle injury, and we learn the Parkers are from Sanditon, a resort town not too far from London, which is much better than Brinshore! I felt a bit bad for Mrs. Parker who really couldn‘t get a word in edgewise lol. #Pemberlittens

Ruthiella I still need to get my copy of this! 🤪 3y
mollyrotondo 😂 Mrs Parker just seemed confused and dismayed 😂 I thought it was interesting that we didn‘t meet the heroine in chapter 1. Just the two fathers of the heroine and who I think will be the love interest of Catherine. 3y

I saw Sanditon (the unfinished version) by Jane Austen in the #hoopla bonus borrows for May so I thought I might as well read it. Too bad that Austen died before finishing it! Some of the characters are very strong as drawn, and I'm not sure it was obviously heading where others have taken it (but I have enjoyed at least one of those versions.) I love the upper class and all their ailments....

Ultimately, Sanditon reads like what it is: a first draft of an incomplete novel. There‘s enough of Austen‘s natural talent there to make it worth reading, but also enough to bum you out – it is terribly, terribly sad that this work will forever remain unfinished. Still, I appreciated this little window into Austen‘s mind and the opportunity to wonder what could've been. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/sanditon-jane-austen/

Ever since I saw the series earlier this year, I wanted to know how much was based on Sanditon and how much was the producers imagination. Austen managed to write 60p and in one way I‘m surprised by how much of the characters Austen manage to establish in those pages. There isn‘t much of a plot and our heroine Charlotte just makes it to Sanditon and is introduced to its people. One can only imagine what direction Austen would have taken the story.

AnneCecilie This edition consists of Lady Susan, The Watsons and Sanditon. I‘ve already read Lady Susan and my main interest was Sanditon. I‘ll leave The Watsons for an other time. I found the introduction to Sanditon interesting. 3rd book finished for #24B4Monday @SumisBooks @Andrew65 @jb72 5y

AnneCecilie @Catherine_Willoughby It‘s not a complete story, it‘s just the beginning. This is one of Austen‘s unfinished novels. 5y
Catherine_Willoughby @AnneCecilie cool. Must get my hands on it as have the other finished novels - know them but only ever read Emma (in school) 5y
Kalalalatja Pretty edition! 5y
Palimpsest I love the clothbound penguin edition, but I hated how Andrew Davies chose to write the ending of Austen‘s book in the Masterpiece series. In her book, the heroine would have gotten the man. It‘s formulaic Austen and he ruined it. I read Sanditon before I started the series and felt an inkling to me when Charlotte saw his portrait that they‘d end up together. At least, if I were adapting Austen that‘s how I would have ended it. 5y
AnneCecilie That‘s why I wanted to read Sanditon to know how true the producers were to Austen. For me the ending in the series wasn‘t in Austen‘s spirit. Her heroines always get their hero‘s, even if they get their heart broken on the way. I too, reacted to that ending, and the beach scene where Charlotte come upon Sidney bathing, but that could have been a modernization like in P&P @Palimpsest 5y
rubyslippersreads After watching the shoe, I agree. A very non-Austen ending. But then maybe they‘re leaving it open for Season 2??? 4y

I‘ve just finished watching the TV series of Sanditon. Now, I‘m curious to find out how much of this was in her unfinished material and how much was the writers/ producers imagination.

I bought the Penguin Clothbound Classic after I saw a Litten post the cover, and I loved it. So now I hope to get to the book soon(ish).

Scochrane26 From what I‘ve heard, she mainly just introduced the characters. So, the first ep is Austen, the rest is writers. (edited) 5y

I've watched the first few episodes of the new adaptation on PBS, so I took time today to read the source material. I wanted to know just how much there was for the show to be based on. It's really only the introduction of the characters, but it does make me curious to see where Austen herself would have taken the story. Now I can watch the show knowing that other than the basic set up, it is a new story.

Scochrane26 I forgot to watch it the other night, but I think my sister dvr‘ed it. 5y
ladym30 It is so good!❤️ 5y
robinb Do you feel that the adaptation seems Austen-authentic? I'm a bit on the fence about it but can't say much as I haven't read this. 5y

inthegreensandblues I am loving the series! 5y
Daisey @robinb These chapters by Austen are only the very beginning of a story. They go no further than setting the scene and introducing a group of characters. Compared to the show, it‘s not even halfway through the first episode so I‘m pretty much viewing it as its own story. My opinion is that I don‘t doubt Austen was aware of and possibly commenting on similar social aspects, but this is definitely a modern portrayal that is not as subtle. 5y
robinb @Daisey thanks! that‘s sort of what I was thinking as I was watching. I do want to read what there is of her story though. 5y
AvidReader25 I‘m excited to watch the show! 5y
Daisey @robinb I meant to read it before watching, but time got away from me and I spent the first episodes wondering the same. It is only about 70 pages, so it didn‘t take long once I found a copy on #Hoopla. 5y
robinb @Daisey To me it‘s always especially sad when an author passes while writing a book...always left wondering. The ultimate cliffhanger really. 5y

I‘m sure I‘ve read the novel fragment (though I don‘t remember much) but I loathe the show. As background, I loved Cranford, P&P, Forsyte Saga, Poldark, Bleak House, and North and South. I feel manipulated and the whole thing just seems silly and tawdry. Theo James appeared naked in front of the heroine (in lieu of chemistry) and I was like, oh puh-leeez. Austen meets PG Game of Thrones. Someone must have agreed, because they tanked it.

ScientistSam PG Game of Thrones was what I thought too! 5y

Finished the 11 and a half chapters of Jane Austen‘s unfinished novel; watching the mini-series right now!

Daisey I watched the first episode tonight and I‘m going to need to track down a copy to read. 5y
CrowCAH @Daisey really only the first 15/20 minutes are the real content Jane wrote, otherwise it‘s Davies fan fiction of what might have been a possible conclusion for the story. 5y
Daisey Good to know. I hope to read it before finishing the series. My main question was really how short the incomplete work is in comparison to the story the show develops. I wouldn‘t have guessed it was quite that short. 5y

Sanditon | Jane Austen

I always feel so sad reading Jane Austen's last work. But her sharpness of wit survived to the end, because even as her health was failing she still had the humour to poke fun at the hypochondriacs who found their way to English bathing resorts, and whom she must have encountered in number during her time living in Bath and visiting Lyme Regis. A bold sense of the ridiculous was a part of Jane Austen's genius and, it seems, it never left her.

Scochrane26 I‘ve never read this one. 5y

Oxford University Press was kind enough to send me their new edition for review, and it casts new light on Sanditon and Austen's body of work leading up to her final, unfinished manuscript. It has a well-researched author bio, a note on the text, full chronology, and generous explanatory notes. A wonderful, fresh take on Austen's most experimental and poignant work! A full review was sent to subscribers at http://www.keepingupwiththepenguins.com
