Shine Shine Shine | Lydia Netzer
A literary debut about a very modern American family. Intelligent, funny and wildly inventive,Shine, Shine, Shineis a captivating love story.Sunny Mann has done everything in her power to create a run-of the-mill life for herself in a quiet Virginian suburb. Her house is elegant, her friends are beautiful, and under her quiet supervision, no one ever goes without a casserole when a loved one is ill. But a minor fender bender between minivans sends her perfect blonde wig sailing out the window, exposing her true identity and threatening to crack her white picket fence existence wide open. Now, a meteor is coming, the local weatherman has gone mad, a murderous past has returned to life, her mathematical genius of a husband is helping his robots to stage an uprising on the moon, and it's up to Sunny to keep it all together. This gloriously inventive, funny novel is at once an intimate portrait of a very modern American family and a timeless love story. It's about the choices that make us human, the line between life and death, and is a captivating exploration of marriage, motherhood and self. * 'A funny, compelling love story from the freshest voice I've heard in years' Sara Gruen, bestselling author of Water for Elephants'Packed with original ideas and compelling characters funny, lyrical and fascinating 'Independent on Sunday'You're pulled into the drama just through the incredible natural beauty of her writing deftly and wittily done'New York Times

Finally reading some of my books that I‘ve collected for free over the years but never read because I always found something more exciting at the library. This book was just ok for me, the storyline was different so that made it a bit better but it was a little too slow for me at the start and never really picked up. Not sure why it was reviewed so highly....

I originally read this because the author is a friend of a friend. And I loved it. I went on to read her next two books. Wish she‘d come out with another one! #Tuneintonovember #shine

Cinfhen That‘s such a neat way to discover a new author 😊 7y

I was good with this quirky story up until three last few pages. Maybe it was how the author alluded to future. I got a little confused on if it was really going to happen or if it was just a hallucination. A more clearly defined ending would have made this a pick for me. #meh #2017christyread #bookclub

Found this beauty at the dollar store and man was it lovely! The story of a relationship between two flawed people against the background of one of them going to the moon. Considering I had a dream the other night that I was going to the moon, I decided this was a timely pick 🤓

Netzer beautifully explores the struggle between acceptance and individuality. The struggle is not only to be accepted by society, but also the battle to accept yourself as a flawed human being. This book reminded me of a saying from St. Francis De Sales - "Be who you are, and be that well."

I won this in a giveaway from the lovely podcast Adventures with Words ages ago. I don't know why I have taken so long to read it. So far, So good.

This one is going to be kind of a reach for today's prompt. I'm going with this book because diamonds shine. 💎 💎 💎

Still need to read this one... I feel like I'm saying that constantly. 😂

Cinfhen I think is a brilliant choice 💎💎💎 8y

I've been really getting into the bookish podcasts the last couple of days, All the Books, what should I read next, Get booked and Reading Envy to name a few. The only issue is my rapidly growing TBR list, of which Shine, Shine, Shine (from Get Booked) is just one!! I've also been getting stuck into the garden while listening and thought I'd share my magnificent new rhubarb plant. Let's hope he survives!

Dragon I love rhubarb! Hope you have a great harvest 😀 8y
Libby1 I just learned from the last book I read that rhubarb leaves are good for getting out blood stains. Who knew? 😬 8y
Joanne1 @Dragon I'm hoping for a great harvest too. I have lots of cooking planned. @Libby1 who knew indeed, though perhaps I'll tuck that bit of info away. It might come in handy one day. 8y
CrowCAH Thanks for sharing a couple of the book podcasts you listen to. I've been trying to find some good ones. 8y

I haven't been doing the photo challenge this month, but I had to jump in today after seeing everyone's blue books. Blue is my favorite color, and the main color in our living room (decided upon after I found this amazing mirror). Yay blue! 💙

It was really well written, an interesting story, just hard to follow as an audiobook for me, which made it a challenge to come back to.
Worth the time, but I think that's important to say.

House sitting for the weekend, and it's a million degrees outside. Internet is down so instead of Netflix and knitting, it is snuggling a slightly annoyed kitty and starting this book. Good thing print books are still a thing because my phone is about to die!

I liked this book but I got very lost at the end, which left me wanting more. Father and son on the autism spectrum are fascinating characters. The wife/mother's main quirk is that she has no hair, on her head or her body. Their lives are fascinating. I only wish the ending had been better.

RachaelTelford I had a hard time with the ending too 8y
