On the Clock
On the Clock: What Low-Wage Work Did to Me and How It Drives America Insane | Emily Guendelsberger
35 posts | 17 read | 70 to read
In the tradition of Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickle and Dimed, journalist Emily Guendelsberger describes her own experience working in the automated and time-starved world of hourly labor, showing what life is like for millions of other Americans today On the Clock is a bitingly funny firsthand account of what happens when a college educated young woman finds herself back at the bottom of the wage-earning ladder in a job which, like 40% of the jobs in America today, pays less than $15.50 an hour. After losing her job as a reporter, Emily Guendelsberger took a job in a call center. Living out of her car, she hoped to be able to get her financial footing before heading back into the reporting world. What she discovered in that first low-wage job, and at two others like it, is a world unto itself where hourly wage work is undergoing a critical transition that we haven't fully grappled with. Advances in monitoring and scheduling technology have sped up the pace of work for millions of workers, fundamentally altering their lives. Exposing the large scale stress of trying to meet robotic work standards, On the Clock shows how the way millions of Americans work today tells us something fundamental but little-understood about our country. To understand this world, Guendelsberger walks 15 miles a day in a vast Amazon warehouse with several conveniently located pain-medicine vending machines, is closely timed at each call center bathroom break, and gets pelted with mustard by a revenge-seeking customer at McDonald's. From her own often comic perspective Emily analyzes the physical and mental effects of chronic stress - from heart disease, obesity, and drug abuse to depression, belief in conspiracies, seeing immigrants as outsiders, and a preference for a strongman leader. On the Clock offers a better understanding of not just low-wage work and how we got to this moment in American history, but the surprising ways that things could get better.

If you liked Nickeled and Dimed, you‘ll love this modern take on how folks live paycheck to paycheck. The author is a journalist and spends time working at Amazon warehouse, McDonalds and an outsourced call center—she ties in the stress related to these types of jobs.

A reporter by trade, the author took on a series of low-wage service jobs: an Amazon warehouse, an AT&T call center and McDonald‘s. Her account of her experience is interspersed with commentary on the sociological, physical and emotional implications of such jobs. Throughout, the author kept herself going by reminding herself that “I can leave.” So many of those who work in these jobs can‘t. Excellent read.

After discussing Nomadland with some friends, I left their house with this book. That's the best kind of friends 😃 It seems to be a really good accompaniment to read alongside Nomadland, the author works in an Amazon warehouse, McDonald's, and a call center. Just started, but finding it take eye opening already.

Oryx @4thhouseontheleft I can imagine it would be hellish. My worst job was working in a factory production line, but it seems like it was so easy compared to some of these jobs. At least we were treated like humans, not machines. I imagine you got so much abuse working in call centers. 3y
alisiakae @Oryx factory work is tough! The peo to call center work is there is no physical labor involved. But the number of times I was propositioned over the phone was disgusting. 3y
Oryx @squirrelbrain hi Helen - I can't remember if you are booked for Gladstone's or not? Hoping yes! 😃 Anyway, my friend said to give this book away - they don't want it back. Shall I bring to Gladstone's for you? Or I'll post it at some point instead if you aren't going. 3y

Wow 😳
Recommended reading for everyone who has never struggled, and validation for those who have!
Have you ever caught yourself thinking 💭 “McDonald‘s employees can never get my order right and they want to make more than minimum wage!?” Start here, for a lesson in empathy ⬆️
The author takes on 3 entry level positions within large corporations and reports on the physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting work experienced.

This is my favorite nonfiction book from 2019, and I was happy to read it again.

Emily took jobs at three major employers: Amazon, McDonald‘s, and Convergys (call center) to show how algorithms have made unskilled jobs even more stressful - from understaffing at McD to the bleakness of an Amazon warehouse to “screamers” on the phone. Every second of these workers days is monitored & scheduled in a way Orwell could only dream of. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ this is one that I feel everyone should read, especially if you haven‘t had a job like this recently or ever. A great choice for #hiddengem #booked2021 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft the #audiobook is great too! (edited) 4y

Reviewsbylola Such a good book! 4y
bridge12 @vivastory I was thinking the same thing! 4y
Megabooks @vivastory I have it on my kindle and tried to read it after this one. I found the author of N&D attitude so much more negative than Emily‘s, it was hard to read back-to-back. Plus, OTC is much more updated to the changes technology has brought to low-wage work. But OTC definitely stands on the work started in N&D. @bridge12 (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Excellent review!! I stacked it on your FIRST RECOMMENDATION but wasn‘t able to borrow it back then ( I‘ll need to check again) or maybe I‘ll use #BoTM credit 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I hope you‘re able to find it at some point because I think you‘d find it really interesting. My library has the audiobook so perhaps somewhere you have picked it up since then?? 4y
Cinfhen I have Audible credits and #BOTM credits so I‘ll probably go that route... my library system is a little disappointing but I‘m not complaining 😉 4y
bridge12 @Megabooks interesting! By all means N&D I read in 2005 as a school wide read my freshman year in college. Not surprising it‘s a bit dated without the technology. I‘m excited to read this knowing it‘s less negative 4y

#nonfiction2020 #economics The author took on entry jobs at Amazon, Convergys, and McDonalds, and wrote about her experiences. It was shocking to learn how much 'micro-managing' down to every second of the workers day, and how dehumanizing the practices are. Felt relevant to read right now, as it's been so difficult for low-wage workers during covid, with companies not protecting their workers well enough!

Megabooks Agree!! Such a timely read during COVID! The techno-Taylorism, as she calls it, is the biggest difference between 80s-90s jobs and now and I think that really makes an understanding gap in even well meaning politicians. 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Megabooks yes for sure! The technology is used in a way that tips the scale of power way too far towards the employer. I really hope that the current crisis will somehow lead to meaningful change for entry-level work and earning a reasonable living wage! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa This is the second great review I‘ve seen for this one, I really need to read it... it sounds so informative. 5y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yes! You really get the inside scoop, it‘s anecdotal vs. scientific... the author used to work for the Onion, so she‘s opinionated and humorous too. So it‘s engaging and illuminating without being preachy or dry. 5y
Cinfhen I really need to read this book/ thanks for the reminder and excellent review 😊 5y

Laid off from her newspaper job, Emily Guendelsberger joined the workforce and applied to several minimum wage jobs to understand the atmosphere of employees working paycheck to paycheck. From the sweatshop conditions of Amazon to the soul sucking hell that is a call center to the wastelands of McDonald's, Guendelberger exposes the harsh realities of trying to earn a livable wage while big corporations reap the benefits through exploitation.

An updated Nickel and Dimed. Author works at an Amazon warehouse, a call center and a McDonalds to explore and write about the ways that low wage work is destroying the physical and mental health of much of our labor force. Thought provoking and ultimately an effective call to action.

The idea that fast food workers aren't real.
Yes we are real! We have feelings and deserved to be treated with respect and kindness. You have no idea why a person is working where they are. I guarantee the jerks wouldn't tolerate being demeaned, get stuff thrown at them, be yelled at, or get spit on at their job.

ravenlee I wish that there were mandatory conscription - like some countries have mandatory military service? - but everyone was required to work for at least one full year in food service or retail. It might make people a little more understanding. 5y

This!!! You can't be a caring person in fast food. What made me a good manager in that I cared for my employees, ate me up on the inside. I couldn't sleep thinking about what was going wrong at the store at that moment. I would get sick in the morning thinking about how short staffed I was for that day and how this would affect everyone. I couldn't read anything right before I quit because my brain wouldn't stop thinking about work.

Emily just had food thrown at her. Reading this section on McDonald's has my heart pounding remembering the last 6 months at Wendy's. I was cussed at daily, had food thrown at me, and was spit at. God. I am so glad I walked away. That job was slowly turning me into an angry unrecognizable person.

I always try to go above and beyond to be the most polite customer that I can be. I empathize with those working these stressful service jobs after my own experiences in food service for almost a decade. On The Clock turned into a more substantive look at the history and future of exploitive labor practices than I expected. The author embeds herself in 3 notoriously unforgiving work environments and shares her experiences. More than that, she castigates the systems that rewards profit before people. For a book on labor and capitalism, it‘s a fun read. If you think automation isn‘t coming for your job, think again. #botm
