Hansel and Gretel
Hansel and Gretel | Neil Gaiman
40 posts | 52 read | 69 to read
The enduring story of the children, the breadcrumb trail and the gingerbread house is brought to life by master storyteller, Neil Gaiman. Who better to retell the Brothers Grimm's greatest, and perhaps darkest, fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel? Coupled with breathtakingly haunting illustrations from Lorenzo Mattotti, you will be enticed into the world and into the woods . . . so beware.

I read this as a companion to the original. Must say I liked Gaiman‘s version better, more atmospheric and descriptive writing. Illustrations were fine.

TheBookHippie I enjoyed this one quite a bit!!! 13mo

The art in this is creepy and could be different for what children are use to.

This work of Traditional Literature is a classic. There are plenty of remakes and alterations of this book but I have always had an edition of the original that I love.

While I enjoyed Gaiman‘s retelling of this fairy tale, the real star is Mattotti‘s beautiful, creepy artwork. Very atmospheric.

This is another one of my favorite folk tales that is often told or read to most children. There has been lots of remakes of the original, but I think the original has a sort of mystery and spookiness that every child takes with them when they read it.

I enjoyed this retelling of fairy tales and especially liked the dramatic black and white illustrations which added to the ‘darkness‘ of the story. Though the retelling seems simple, Gaiman is able to inject minor changes that reflect reality of life like a truly loving and caring father who made a bad decision by succumbing to the wife‘s call to abandon the children..and that‘s a natural mother, not a step mother.

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve been curious about the tagged book. Graphic novel? 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @erzascarletbookgasm It is a collection of black and white paintings with text. It‘s a pretty basic retelling of the story with a little atmospheric Gaiman flair. 6y

#Booked2019 winter Roundup. Didn't make it to prompt 3, struggled to find something related to hiking that I was interested in and hadn't already read. I'll come back to it for the sake of finishing the whole challenge. 😊

I am a huge fan of Gaiman, and this little story is no exception. Stays true to the spirit of the fairy tale it is retelling. Mattotti's artwork is haunting and beautiful.

TrishB I read this one too 👍🏻 6y
Cinfhen I was gonna say another Litten used the same book for the prompt and liked it too!! I‘m a bit tempted to try even though I don‘t really like Gaiman or fairytale retellings 😂😂😂 6y
Canndor @Cinfhen I think I had added it to my TBR from @TrishB 's review. It is very short so even if you don't end up liking it, not much time will be wasted. :) 6y

A very dark retelling of the classic tale. I actually liked the darkness - I hate that that aspect of fairy tales is always being stripped away - I just wished there was more depth. I was missing something besides dark and spooky.

Well, my first Neil Gaiman read was a short one but a good one. Of course, I've always been vaguely familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel, but I don't know if I've ever sat down and actually read the story. It is quite disturbing for a children's fairytale, but I really enjoyed this retelling by Gaiman and the artwork included. Thank you @ReadingRover !🤗Now, I can't wait to read something meatier from Gaiman. Yay! 4.5⭐️#neilgaiman 🤓

PirateJenny All fairy tales are disturbing if you read them in even their close to original versions. That's what makes them great! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @PirateJenny so true! Gaiman actually talks about this at the end of the book. Hard to believe they were considered suitable for children. But definitely very creepy and worth reading! This was short but I was enthralled. 7y
ReadingRover I read this one before I sent it to you. It was pretty good. I‘m all about the dark fairytales. The darker the better. When I saw it on you‘re tbr I had to send it. You definitely have to read more Gaiman!!! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @ReadingRover yes! I have three audiobooks and two kindle books, plus one or two regular books that I've acquired of his over the last month or so. Definitely need to get on the ball and read more of his stuff! Thanks again! 🤗 7y

Prompted by @Tiffy_Reads with a favourite #fairytaleretelling prompt I picked this back up again off the shelf for a re-read. The simple retelling by Gaiman of this story, coupled with the masterful illustrations of Mattotti makes for a quick yet dark read.

My boss made a mistake and put me in the fairy tale section today 😏 I recommend reading the original - there is nothing special about this and Gaiman doesn't really change anything. The pictures are pretty ugly as well.

I can tell that Neil Gaiman has strived for every perfect word on these pages. Love the postscript which explained that the narrative was inspired by the art, which itself was inspired by an opera by Englebert Humperdinck (no, not THAT Englebert Humperdinck, it transpires that there's two of them - who knew?!). Just exquisite.

Would have been much easier for these kids to figure out what's what if they saw their scenes through the art of Lorenzo Mattotti in this edition of their story. His lovely, overwhelmingly dark art makes this edition a keeper.

Pulled this off my Gaiman shelf for a quick reread since the art is pleasantly dark for the lead-up to Halloween, and, well, don't we all just need to dip into fairy tales periodically? Neil's retelling doesn't change much, this edition for me us all about the art.
Excellent short explanation at the end about H&G's origins with Grimm and possibly earlier.
Tempting gingerbread houses and evil witches are perfect this time of year🎃🕸

#hour8 @DeweysReadathon #readathon. I read Sleeper and the Spindle last Readathon and loved the twist to the classic sleeping beauty story and was sort of expecting that with this one....but nope. So I was a little disappointed. But that art was so dark and creepy... it gave the book some ambience, which is the reason for the third star. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
