A Blink of the Screen
A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction | Terry Pratchett
25 posts | 14 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
A collection of short fiction from Terry Pratchett, spanning the whole of his writing career from schooldays to Discworld and the present day. In the four decades since his first book appeared in print, Terry Pratchett has become one of the world's best-selling and best-loved authors. Here for the first time are his short stories and other short-form fiction collected into one volume. A Blink of the Screen charts the course of Pratchett's long writing career: from his schooldays through to his first writing job on the Bucks Free Press, and the origins of his debut novel, The Carpet People; and on again to the dizzy mastery of the phenomenally successful Discworld series. Here are characters both familiar and yet to be discovered; abandoned worlds and others still expanding; adventure, chickens, death, disco and, actually, some quite disturbing ideas about Christmas, all of it shot through with Terry's inimitable brand of humour. With an introduction by Booker Prize-winning author A.S. Byatt, illustrations by the late Josh Kirby and drawings by the author himself, this is a book to treasure.

A few of the Discworld short stories I had read before elsewhere, but the Granny one was still my favorite….the other ones were a bit hit and miss for me personally.

An interesting read because Sir Terry certainly reused ideas - a lot of the non Discworld stuff eventually found its way there. Still, enjoyable! Fav non Discworld story is the Christmas horror one.

Gotta say, the note in front of Theater of Cruelty is right: it IS a lot easier to understand I you know about Punch and Judy (knowledge I lacked when I first read this as a child).

Also, very funny that it took books and books for Vimes to see Death (and then he doubts the reality of the moment), but Carrot is out here interviewing him ASAP.

Taking small breaks in my spooky season reading to try and catch up with the #OokBOokClub and the thing that caught me this morning: he made up an episode of Star Trek???

BookmarkTavern I loved so many of these! The Sea and The Little Fishes was probably my favorite! Although Once and Future is a close second. That one did make me wonder if more of it was on the hard drive they ran over with the steamroller. And the peek into what The Long Earth could have been just made me feel melancholy. 2y
khooliha @ozma.of.oz I'm still working on this one (and skipping around, since I've read bits for Pratchat) but The Sea and The Little Fishes is a real standout. Last time I read it my review was basically that for Granny Weatherwax and flex and a tragedy can be the same thing. 2y

Over 40 years of writing, & this collection gathers together pieces from all across Sir Terry Pratchett‘s writing career.

It‘s amazing being able to watch his skill change over time. The intros he wrote for each were a fascinating glimpse into his thoughts. And I loved, LOVED all the Discworld stories especially “The Sea”. But I felt disappointed too. We see a bit of what The Long Earth would have been with just him. I want THAT book. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Jari-chan If The Long Earth would've been written only by Pratchett it would've been such a great series 🙈 2y

Terry Pratchett's shorter fiction, including juvenilia from college magazines and also some Discworld stories.

Did a quick read of Troll Bridge today because I have fallen desperately in love with the podcast Pratchat and I don't want to wait around too long to listen to the eps. Verdict: surprisingly sad!

Guess how this equation turns out: Me + Free Time + Gift Card + Nearby Bookstore = ? I had an hour to kill before picking up hubby from work & the $50 #Indigo gift card I won last Nov. just begging to be used... I got 2 books (both #tbr), a mug that fits me to a “tea” & a zip up journal sleeve with removable notebook. There's room to squeeze them onto my shelves but 😱 Why is not buying books so damn HARD?! #NoWillpower #BanShman 🤷‍♀️#WorthIt

JSW THAT MUG IS EVERYTHING 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 6y

Fun. Short stories. Just the right amount of entertainment for a lunch hour or bus ride to work.

[S]cience fiction fans might break out in pointy ears from time to time, but they bought books by the shovelful and read them round the clock.

Have I mentioned how much I like our library?

BookishMarginalia That's cool! 8y
LibrarianToujours I so want to do this at my library, especially because I recently found an 18,000 piece puzzle. But we don't have any space. 8y
Lacythebookworm We have puzzles in our library over the summer for patrons. (And during student breaks for staff!) 🙌😊 8y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ok. Im coming clean. Im your cupid and am STRESSING that your envelope hasnt arrived. I mailed it Jan 20th. It made it to California and is "en route." I think usps means they got it to the California shore, placed it in the ocean, and gave it a gentle push. ? 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I actually mailed it Jan 14th. Asked the lady at the post office if it would make it to you by Valentine's Day. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and said she didnt know. 🙄 8y
meltedsquirrel @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled haha it's okay if it's late. Usually it will say California until it arrives at the post office here in base. I never expect mail to be on time here. I just remember to be thankful that I don't have to pay international shipping for things from the states. 8y

not the complete list of reads for December, but a little stack of the ones I have on hand. I love the freedom to read while traveling with my Nook, but it's exciting to be able to read some physical books again :)

(and thanks for the majority of these @courtneybee !)
