I'm at the part where Laila marries Rasheed. I knew something wasn't right when Rasheed was being nice. I knew he hadn't changed, but it still shocked me when Mariam confronted him. I hate him. Both him and Jalil.
What happened to Babi and Tariq is really sad. I had to stop reading.

This one wrecked me 💔😓
A deeply moving story of endurance. I couldn‘t put it down. An uncomfortable and heart-breaking read that is a reminder of how strong love can be.
I read this as a love story. A love between separated childhood sweethearts; a love between two unlikely friends; and the love of a homeland. A Thousand Splendid Suns is powerful prose.
What a grest book! It was heartbreaking and made me so so thankful for being able to grow up and live in a safe country with basic human (female) rights 🙏🏼 the story follows two woman through their hardships, forced marriages, brutality, loss of rights and wars. 5/5⭐️

Another month where I didn‘t read much. The tagged was my favorite one.
I also enjoyed Clothes-Pegs and Foul Lady Fortune

She remembered Nana saying once that each snowflake was a sigh heaved by an aggrieved woman somewhere in the world. That all the sighs drifted up the sky, gathered into clouds, then broke into tiny pieces that fell silently on the people below. As a reminder of how people like us suffer, she'd said. How quietly we endure all that falls upon us.

Though there had been moments of beauty in it, Mariam knew that life for the most part had been unkind to her.

Starting my November #doublespin a wee bit late.
This is also from my #unreadbookshelf list and one of my #23in23 picks.
Very complete look into a very different world. So very interesting and moving
Unpopular opinion, but I didn't care for this book. Maybe because I listened to it, it lost something 🤷
All I know is it didn't keep my interest. But, I did stick with it, bc everyone else raved about it.

Second book for #JoysofJune Readathon @Andrew65
Read in May- another oldie in my tbr. I loved this book. I know it has been criticized about the polarized characters development, others say they are not realistic but still. The story is about all these wars and political conflicts in Afghanistan. The author will explain some history events, specifically the role of women, through the eyes of Mariam and Laila😢It is a heartbreaking story. I loved it and I‘m glad I read it. ❤️ ⬇️
It was a really good book! I strongly recommend reading it. It‘s a little boring at the beginning but the end was sooooo good.
This has been on my shelf for a thousand years and I'm happy to have finally gotten to it. Beautifully written story of hardship, abuse and heartbreak. I'm not sure why it took me so long

A powerful message given what is once again happening in Afghanistan whilst the world just stands by and watches. 😢 Education for all girls and women should be a fundamental right across every country in the world.

Worth all the hype
Truly opened my eyes to the past and present of Afganistan
I wish everybody to be safe and healthy

I loved this book so much that I hated putting it down to cook dinner. The writing is magnificent and the characters are loveable (mostly)!
Although not as good as The Kite Runner, it's still a great read

Hosseini rises to the daunting challenge of following The Kite Runner with a grim but ultimately hopeful story of two women's lives in a patriarchal society.
“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”

Covering a tumultuous time in Afghanistan, the lives of two women become intertwined in Kabul.
It was a tough read, especially with everything happening with women‘s rights around the world as well as in Afghanistan currently.
I feel like ultimately the story ended on a hopeful note though.

I liked it... was not as spectacular as I anticipated. I think I liked The Kite Runner better. For me...⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Kiss Aziza for me," she said. "Tell her she is the noor of my eyes and the sultan of my heart. Will you do that for me?”
I met my #MarvellousMay goals by finishing Beyond the Tower, and starting the tagged book
I have just reached part 3 so I am nearly halfway through.
It‘s a tough read and I have a feeling it‘s going to get worse, but at the same time I am enjoying the story ☺️

Grabbed this photo at #bookclub today. 🤩 Want to make lovely new friends as an adult? Start a book club! A friend and I started this group only knowing a couple of members, but we posted in local fb groups, and ladies showed up to the first meeting not knowing anyone. That takes courage! We‘ve now had 3 meetings, and I‘m digging our core group of 10-12. Bookish people are the BEST. 💚
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I never picked this up during its first few years of incredible success, then the window of my caring shut tight. Now, here we are many years later, and it‘s my new IRL book club‘s selection. I acquiesced. Hosseini focuses on the lives of Mariam and Laila, two women, two generations, ravaged by unrest and oppression in their native Afghanistan. It‘s a beautifully written, brutal story. I‘m happy to have finally read it. #bookclub
An interesting - and somewhat difficult - read in 2021 with all that's happening again in Afghanistan. There was such depth and richness in this with a beautiful story of two women who come together in an unexpected way.
Oh, this book! Beautifully done and so heartbreaking. 💔

A difficult choice for February, but chose this one as story stayed in my head most. Also notable mentions for Three Marys by Glenn Cooper, Deadly Cry by Angela Marsons and The Night Hawks by Ellie Griffiths. A good reading month.
It‘s a heartbreaking story of friendship, war and life in Afghanistan. Mariam and Laila are brought together by circumstances and soon become very close. Taliban has taken over Kabul and they need to survive its regime.
It‘s a really captivating story seeing Afghanistan through Mariam‘s & Laila‘s eyes.
Such similar covers and coincidence of having two picks for upcoming bookclub selections! I have just finished the ‘The Space Between Us‘ and looking forward to reading ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns‘.
I am constantly astounded by this book every time I get a chance to listen to it. We were on the topic of horror tonight in my book club and I was brought back to this book constantly within our discussion. This novel is not by any means the definition of a horror story. But I feel that sense of shock and unbelief as Mariam‘s story goes on. It‘s truly heart wrenching and raw. Glad to be reading it even if it‘s difficult.

This book… 😭😭
Picked out my next read 😐
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Now, I've had this in my pile for a few years. However, I absolutely *hated* The Kite Runner [what?! Shocking, I know.] So I've been putting this off due to my abhorrence of TKR.
Sooooo here's hoping this one isn't as bad lol
I've heard good things, but... everyone generally raves about TKR, too ... and since I'm the minority who hated it, I'm not sure about this one.
