The Persian Pickle Club | Sandra Dallas
20 posts | 30 read | 42 to read
It is the 1930s, and hard times have hit Harveyville, Kansas, where the crops are burning up, and there's not a job to be found. For Queenie Bean, a young farm wife, a highlight of each week is the gathering of the Persian Pickle Club, a group of local ladies dedicated to improving their minds, exchanging gossip, and putting their quilting skills to good use. When a new member of the club stirs up a dark secret, the women must band together to support and protect one another. In her magical, memorable novel, Sandra Dallas explores the ties that unite women through good times and bad.

Continuing to unearth the bottom of my tbr pile, I”m currently reading this one about a quilting circle in depression era Kansas. Fun fact, persian pickle is a quilting term for the paisley pattern.

This was my first book by this author but it won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this story of friendship, loyalty, & hard times. It's Kansas in the 1930s & small town/farm life life is harder than ever. It hasn't rained in years, it seems, & (most) everyone pulls together to get by. The story focuses on a group of farm wives, the Persian Pickles, who meet weekly to quilt. Over one late summer we get to know these remarkable women & learn ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ about the lengths they'll go to for each other. 3y
robinb Sounds like a good one! I love discovering new authors. 😊 3y

I‘m like 99% sure I‘ve read this before. I realized it not too far in, so the end was not a surprise. Still a cute book, still a fun twist, but I‘m not sure I‘ll read it a third time. Unless I forget again...

The book was pretty slow, but did pick up about half-way through when the body was found, and as a few other more exciting/interesting things happened. Overall, it‘s all about the women‘s friendships. The first half, I was about to rate it 3 stars (ok), but upped it just a bit once it got more interesting in the second half.

What a cute and touching story! I expected it to be a crime novel (which of course it is), but found it to be more a book about friendship. Touching, without being cheesy ❤ 📕

⭐⭐⭐⭐ A sweet little story about a circle of women who are bound by loyalty, friendship and quilting. This takes place during the great depression in a small Kansas town. Entertaining and enjoyable so much that I had to go out and find another Sandra Dallas book to start tonight. 💖💜💙💚

2. Fantasy and sci fi. I read them when they are highly recommended by someone who knows I don‘t usually like them.

3. A cat. Tink. She‘s calico. A lot of Litten know her. ❤️

Slow, immersive historical fiction about female friendship. I loved the sense of place (the dust rose off the pages) and time the novel was infused with but would have preferred more character development and interactions vs a murder/investigation plot line. Ultimately felt a bit ‘cozy‘ when it could have been more. (Passion fruit chocolate also v good!)

DivaDiane Hi there! I hope you are feeling better these days? Did you try the Slum Gullion? 😊 6y
Itchyfeetreader @DivaDiane hi felling much better over the last day or so thanks - I am nearly finished and only just figuring out how I feel each cycle! Yes we had slum gullion last week - perfect comfort food and v easy to cook! I‘ll remember to snap a photo next time! 6y

@Jabberwocky reminded me about this book when I recently read another by the same author. I think this could be in the “Cozy” category. The 1930‘s Depression and Kansas dust bowl years were certainly sugar coated. That time period in history as well as quilting are of interest to me, but I just wasn‘t feeling it. 2/5⭐️

My background for the pic is a quilt that I hand pieced and hand quilted a few years ago using 1930‘s reproduction fabrics.

WorldsOkayestStepMom Your quilt is beautiful! You've got some amazing quilting skills! 7y
Jabberwocky Oh darn I had such high hopes! Great quilt though! 7y

@Suzze posted about this book a couple months ago and I saw that Scribd had the audiobook so I decided to give it a try. I have a hard time focusing on audio books sometimes but this was perfect. The story was light but interesting. The ladies of this Kansas quilting bee were great characters. I cannot even sew on a button but I would not mind spending time with the Pickles.

Suzze Glad you liked it! Nice it had an ending that left questions, it made for a great book group discussion. Probably our best ever. 8y
Jas16 @suzze Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It was the perfect book to listen to during a stressful week. I can see how it would inspire some fun conversations. I miss my book group. 8y
