Jane, the Fox & Me
Jane, the Fox & Me | Fanny Britt
Helene has been inexplicably ostracized by the girls who were once her friends. Her school life is full of whispers and lies "Helene weighs 216; she smells like BO." Her loving mother is too tired to be any help. Fortunately, Helene has one consolation, Charlotte Bronte s "Jane Eyre." Helene identifies strongly with Jane s tribulations, and when she is lost in the pages of this wonderful book, she is able to ignore her tormentors. But when Helene is humiliated on a class trip in front of her entire grade, she needs more than a fictional character to allow her to see herself as a person deserving of laughter and friendship. Leaving the outcasts tent one night, Helene encounters a fox, a beautiful creature with whom she shares a moment of connection. But when Suzanne Lipsky frightens the fox away, insisting that it must be rabid, Helene s despair becomes even more pronounced: now she believes that only a diseased and dangerous creature would ever voluntarily approach her. But then a new girl joins the outcasts circle, Geraldine, who does not even appear to notice that she is in danger of becoming an outcast herself. And before long Helene realizes that the less time she spends worrying about what the other girls say is wrong with her, the more able she is to believe that there is nothing wrong at all. This emotionally honest and visually stunning graphic novel reveals the casual brutality of which children are capable, but also assures readers that redemption can be found through connecting with another, whether the other is a friend, a fictional character or even, amazingly, a fox."

I really like this small book. The book was black and white most of the time but some places was color, I really liked that part. It would go colour mainly when the girl is happy. The girl gets bullied quite a bit at school by lots of different people. She helps get away of all that by reading which she loves. Overall this is a great book and i definitely recommended it.

This graphic novel entwines Jane Eyre‘s story with the story of Helene, who has experienced bullying in school. The illustrations convey deep emotion, with gray coloring and somber lines. Helene feels adrift, until a chance encounter with a red fox gives her a new perspective. This book offers solace and hope to readers and would serve as a good recommendation to any middle schooler suffering from bullying.

I am taking a course that focuses on service and resources for children in the library. I have to read a children‘s graphic novel and I found these two. I loved Coraline and I found this Jane Eyre rendition. Has anyone read either of these? Or do you know of anymore have any suggestions for children‘s graphic novels? #coraline #graphicnovel #mustread #bibliophile

TracyReadsBooks These are both great and very popular in our library. If you want/need more ideas, I would suggest the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi; Smile, Sisters, Drama, Guts by Raina Telgemeier; Awkward, Brave, Crush by Svetlana Chmakova; New Kid by Jerry Craft; El Deafo by Cece Bell; Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol; The Prince and the Dress Maker by Jen Wang. So many great options for young readers! 5y
xicanti I highly recommend the Nameless City series by Faith Erin Hicks. The Yotsuba books by Kiyohiko Azuma are also fantastic. 5y
Mirazzles @TracyReadsBooks thank you for all of the lovely suggestions! I will have to look into borrowing some of these! I have never read crush by Svetlana Chmakova but I believe she wrote the Dramacon series which I did read as a teenager and enjoyed! 5y

This picture book/graphic novel follows a young girl who is now an outcast and bullied. Her days at school are shown in grays. When she reads Jane Eyre, however, the illustrations are in full color. When her school goes on a trip to the country, color begins to peak in.

I love the use of color in this book and the beautiful illustrations 💕. Loved the message too. #scarathlon 1pt (read) #TeamStoker + (matte cover) #ScaryScavengerHunt

Ooof. This was a beautiful gut punch. I remember so clearly those middle school feelings of shame, isolation, inadequacy, and longing; I also turned to Jane Eyre for solace (and to hide). This lovely graphic novel has completely gorgeous illustrations and a painfully real protagonist looking for connection and affirmation. It also has a wonderfully sweet ending, I'm happy to report! #GraphicNovel #InTranslation

#Aprella Day 14: #ItsAShame that there is still so much bullying going on in schools, especially among tweeners. This is a powerful illustrated novel about a young girl grappling with body shaming, belonging, and figuring out who she is by escaping into Jane Eyre‘s world. I wanted to borrow this from the library but sadly it‘s been taken out - no longer available. There must have been a complaint about its “appropriateness.”

Mdargusch Sounds perfect for this prompt. Sorry you couldn‘t check it out. 🤔 7y
Reviewsbylola Gorgeously illustrated. It sounds great. 7y
Titania At my kids' middle school library, if a book disappears from the catalog, it probably went missing. I always like to think that some kid connected with the book so much that they snuck out with it. 7y

I loved this book so much. I was and still considered myself as different from most people. This often leads to feelings of loneliness that are hard to carry sometimes, but makes connections so much more meaningful. I often turned to books to feel less lonely and they inspired me to be true to myself. That is why I love Jane Eyre and why this book was so beautiful to me.

Texreader I think I must have this book. I was teased relentlessly my freshman year in high school until I found myself, fortunately by my sophomore year. Books were such a solace. I need my dear daughter (a freshman now) to read this although she seems to be doing far better than me at that age. Thanks so much for sharing. 7y

This was more painful to read than I had expected. Hélène's experience being bullied by former "friends" felt so real, so senselessly cruel, and her isolation complete. I remember those days. Reading Jane Eyre provides her comfort and hope, but also a heightened sense of what she supposedly lacks. And the fox, her mother... ? Reminds me of that Adrienne Rich quote: "Without tenderness, we are in hell." The tenderness in this book is powerful.

Kalalalatja It is such a great book! 7y

So beautiful! I love the story and the illustrations. Like Helene, (and many of you) I use books to filter out and to understand the world around me--to find myself. Also, Helene's brothers are drawn to look like ninjas. And her mother is a wonderful person. I cannot recommend this sweet, delightful book enough. Spoiler alert: if you haven't read Jane Eyre, she gives away the ending.

Jane, The Fox and Me is a graphic novel about a girl being bullied. She thinks she is fat (which she is not) and unlikeable (which she isn't either). To escape she read Jane Eyre. And there's a Fox too. What is not to love?

She is a great #childprotagonist and she drama with a lot of problems that I think a lot of girls/women can relate to.

The character overlays her favorite story Jane Eyre onto her life in a self-deprecating way, yet adding humor to deal with awkwardness and low self-image. Anyone who dealt with those topics when younger will see the beauty and find healing in this book. One of my favorites this year.
