Rapunzel's Revenge | Shannon Hale, Dean Hale

Mehso-so

I was not completely sold on this one. The twist from the Rapunzel story is nice - Rapunzel finding ways to combat Gothel, but the whole American West vibe, with outlaws and bandits and the cliched western frontier talk, made me want to roll my eyes. The illustrations are engaging. #FictionGraphicNovel #MiddleGrade #BBRC

LibrarianRyan As one book I agree. But as a series which it is it‘s not bad. 4y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Interesting...I had not realized it was a series. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle I believe there are 2 more. They can be read as standalone s but the characters are the same. 4y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Good to know...thanks! 4y
Sace The cover is cute though! 4y

I really liked this #middlegrade #fictiongraphicnovel that deals with friendship, art as an emotional outlet, and how important it is to deal with your emotions and not deny or bury them. First in a series. #bbrc #bookspinbingo #freespace

My only gripe with this is the cover, which doesn‘t fit the tone of the book - it‘s much heavier.

1976. Sunny is sent to stay with her grandfather, in his Florida retirement village, for the summer holidays. We see her bored, settling in, making a friend, and discovering comic books. We also slowly learn of the trouble at home that‘s led to her being sent out of harm‘s way for the summer.

rockpools A sweet read, that looks at the impact of substance abuse on a family. Sometimes ‘seeing nothing‘ isn‘t the best plan.

LiteraryinPA Wow, you would never guess from the cover that that is the theme. 4y
rockpools @LiteraryinLititz Ikr? I mean, it‘s very sensitively done, and the family situation is mostly lurking in the background. But it really isn‘t a fun-in-the-sun beach read! 4y

This graphic novel entwines Jane Eyre‘s story with the story of Helene, who has experienced bullying in school. The illustrations convey deep emotion, with gray coloring and somber lines. Helene feels adrift, until a chance encounter with a red fox gives her a new perspective. This book offers solace and hope to readers and would serve as a good recommendation to any middle schooler suffering from bullying.

“We walk...”

The story of a young boy, Ebo, attempting to reach his sister & a better life in Europe. We‘re aware of the dangers to migrants attempting to cross the Med; Ebo‘s story shows how much has already been endured to reach that point.

Told for #MiddleGrade #FictionGraphicNovel readers, it‘s clear, simple & effective with detailed pictures & a hopeful conclusion. #BBRC
The afterword is a true story of one woman‘s own journey, in GN form.

BookwormAHN Sounds like a powerful story. 5y

A girl power graphic novel, in which the heroine, Goldie, deals with typical teen life while being a quick-witted detective. This 16 year old is smart, confident, and a force to be reckoned with! With the help of her friends, she finds out the truth behind Mr. Ludwig.

Vibes of Scooby Doo, Nancy Drew, and Speedracer - and maybe a little Archie, too.

LibrarianRyan This has been on my TBR for a while. I guess it's time to move it u 5y
mabell @LibrarianRyan I have very little experience in the genre (I really don‘t even know the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book), but I enjoyed it. I‘m going to pick up Volume 2! 5y
LibrarianRyan @mabell the basic difference if length. Graphic novels usually collect all a comic series into book form. Or are a longer form for stories that will not fit in a standard length comic book. Usually, say like I hate Fairyland, each chapter is 1 comic book, three chapters make a graphic novel, and in the case of this title 10 make a “book“. It's really all the same. It's a story told in graphic context. 5y
mabell @LibrarianRyan Ah gotcha! 5y
