Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy
Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy | Heather Ann Thompson
The first definitive account of the infamous 1971 Attica prison uprising, the state's violent response, and the victims' decades-long quest for justice including information never released to the public published to coincide with the forty-fifth anniversary of this historic event. On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, during the four long days and nights that followed, the inmates negotiated with state officials for improved living conditions. On September 13, the state abruptly ended talks and sent hundreds of heavily armed state troopers and corrections officers to retake the prison by force. In the ensuing gunfire, thirty-nine men were killed hostages as well as prisoners and close to one hundred were severely injured. After the prison was secured, troopers and officers brutally retaliated against the prisoners during the weeks that followed. For decades afterward, instead of charging any state employee who had committed murder or carried out egregious human rights abuses, New York officials prosecuted only the prisoners and failed to provide necessary support to the hostage survivors or the families of any of the men who'd been killed. Heather Ann Thompson sheds new light on one of the most important civil rights stories of the last century, exploring every aspect of the uprising and its legacy from the perspectives of all of those involved in this forty-five-year fight for justice: the prisoners, the state officials, the lawyers on both sides, the state troopers and corrections officers, and the families of the slain men. I listened to this as an audiobook and it was a pretty heavy topic for that format. It‘s also very long, because it covers a lot! I didn‘t know anything about this uprising before reading. Thompson covers what led to the uprising, the violent retaking of the prison, the legal cases that followed, and the coverup of what really happened. I read this because it was on The Stacks podcast and it was my #doublespin for November #BookspinBingo

JamieArc I‘ve had this on my TBR for a while and I‘ve heard good things about it, but have been hesitant to start it because it‘s a chunkster. 3y

This is a comprehensive account of the uprising at Attica in 1971. It‘s an important read as it reveals the truth of what really happened and exposes the brutal treatment the inmates experienced; physically and emotionally. The nonexistent training for officers, horrible plan for the retaking, and complete lack of regard for the hostages. So heartbreaking to read about the inhumane treatment of the inmates. 💔 #MountTBR

JamieArc This has been on my stack for a while but the size is intimidating! Is it engaging? 4y
NatalieR @JamieArc It‘s 578 pages, so not as long as it looks. It‘s super engaging. There was a section after the retaking that was a bit boring as it focused on politics and legal stuff; just super detailed. 4y

Oh boy, this was another tough one for #Nonfiction2020 - “something about criminal justice/ incarceration”. The inmates suffered horrible abuses at the hands of the state before, during, and after the uprising. And then there was the coverup.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa There will be a lot of tough ones, but remember you don‘t need to read them all in one month! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great job though...sorry, I should have said that first. 5y
Jadams89 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂 I know - I just keep coming upon books on my TBR and then realizing they work for this. I‘m going to find a nice cozy book for my next read. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Jadams1776 Well yay for it helping you clear out some of your TBR pile, but YES give yourself a break and a comfy read. 5y

For 5 days in September 1971 prisoners took control of a prison near buffalo New York. Prisoners complained they were treated inhumanly. 39 people died and 108 people were shot. This encounter was considered the bloodiest encounter between Americans. #ucflae3414f19

ChrisC This is a nonfiction book based on real events. This book was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. This book could be used in the high school classroom for independent reading and to help students build stamina. The UDL strategy to focus on this book would be to provide option for self regulation (9.1). This would optimize motivation. A good ELL strategy would be to offer students a variety of reference materials at there level for independent use. (edited) 5y
DrSpalding Same comments as previous posts. You are quite thoughtful in regards to universal design and English learner strategies however without identifying a resource I am not sure that they work together. 5y

This incredibly researched deep dive into the Attica Uprising in 1971 blew my mind. A great read, but one that took me a while to get through. So much info and so very hard to read, but a very necessary and enlightening book. All the stars! 💫⭐️🌟✨

JamieArc This is on my list to read this year. Just hesitant because I know it‘s going to be quite the undertaking. 6y

Flat out one of the best books on history I've ever read, an absolute must read. Be prepared for a whole lot of trauma.... this is by no means an easy read. But the insight into prison conditions, police brutality and ultimately masculinity is unparalleled here.

Page 11 and I am already disgusted by the racism that feeds the prison industrial complex.

Hooked_on_books If you haven‘t already read it, Michelle Alexander‘s The New Jim Crow is another great example of systemic racism in the justice system. It‘s so well written. 6y
MsLeah8417 @Hooked_on_books Yes, I have Michelle Alexander‘s book as well. I also read Bryan Stevenson‘s Just Mercy earlier this summer. 6y

Woah. There‘s not enough space for all my thoughts. I‘ll leave it at- if you want to have any understanding of civil rights/social justice, you MUST understand the prison industrial complex and the “tough on crime” propaganda. I was hoping to assign this for my 10th grader next year, but there is too much description of torture. 4⭐️

This made both my head and heart hurt. It‘s a relentlessly depressing saga of justice delayed and denied. If you want to know the legacy of slavery and the long reach of racism and white supremacy into the post-Civil Rights era, you have to reckon with mass incarceration. Scary and sad how culture paints brown and black men as violent threats, which then justifies our treating them as sub-Human. Only bright spot is when survivors found solidarity.

About 1/4 of the way through and really enjoying it. Not that it‘s a light read, but the author‘s writing style is very engaging and easy to follow. I love it when I don‘t have to struggle to understand a complex story.

This was a tough book emotionally for me to read. I know many people who work for the Department of Corrections, and I once had a tour of Attica. Learning the minute details behind what happened, what the State actually allows to be let out, was hard to read. But read it must be, especially for anyone interested in law enforcement. A well done read that kept me hooked.
