Endurance
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage | Alfred Lansing
The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip. To write their authoritative story, Lansing consulted with ten of the surviving members and gained access to diaries and personal accounts by eight others. The resulting book has all the immediacy of a first-hand account, expanded with maps and illustrations especially for this edition.

My heart belongs to the Franklin expedition, but I‘m trying to branch out! Endurance doesn‘t disappoint (truly HOW did they survive that) but I do have an unpopular opinion™️. I am not sold on Shackleton‘s leadership skills! Lansing glosses over mistakes and tends to give Shackleton full credit for feats that were group efforts (or even just Frank Worsley efforts, justice for Frank.) It felt biased and made me wonder about other sides to the story

Tara (Also fyi for fellow animal lovers, there‘s a cat and several dogs that do not make it out of this expedition and it is not easy to read about. Also lots of hunting of penguins and seals.) 3mo

1. Stranger in the Mirror
It‘s been hard coming to grips with how much I‘ve changed since getting pregnant and having The Wyrmling. Not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well. Although it‘s still a surprise when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My mental image of myself hasn‘t updated to the new outer look…

2. Tagged. Excellent book about an adventure I could never hope to survive, but loved reading about.

LiteraryinPA I totally relate to that feeling. Not due to pregnancy, just aging/body changes. It‘s jarring sometimes, isn‘t it? Sending hugs! 8mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @LiteraryinLawrence Thank you, sending hugs back! 🥰 It really is. I know I have extra pounds hanging around but I‘m not really aware of it until I walk past the bathroom mirror to take a shower. It honestly doesn‘t really get me down unless I‘m having a bad day already. I knew I wasn‘t going to have the same body after carrying and squeezing out a whole child. 😅 I‘m just surprised my brain hasn‘t caught up with it. 8mo

An absolutely amazing story of survival. What these men went through is unimaginable and they faced it all head on. Shackleton was a rare kind of leader that got his men through the most unforgiving place on Earth. Nothing could stop them and the way they kept their humanity through it all is inspiring. Lansing brought all their accounts together in one compelling book, giving the reader a first hand look at what humans are capable of.

Intense and chilling, this true story reads like a tall tale. Real-world heroism, a brotherhood of camaraderie and optimism, and survival skills all play a role in this adventure. Lansing‘s words are so descriptive, I found myself layering my clothes to warm myself while reading about the Antarctic expedition gone wrong.

I can't even begin to review this book. This one has left me in awe of Shackleton and his men. The grit and determination they had to survive and get back home approaches superhuman. No, it goes beyond superhuman. This is a book for the ages. Excellently written using historical documents, crew diaries, and interviews. Stop what you are reading and read this.

An amazing story, and hard to believe they survived for so long stranded in the antarctic. The descriptions say the men were constantly wet from snow, ice and rain. I feel they all should have frozen solid! The book ends with them all being rescued. I was hoping for a little more about their lives after rescue, but still a great book.

A little dry and not for the faint of heart, this is a detailed account of Shackleton‘s expedition to Antarctica and the struggle for survival after the Endurance became trapped in ice and sank. If you are squeamish about animal death, skip this. Parts of this were so hard to listen to and the depictions of amputations made me gag (literally), but the story itself is an incredible one of perseverance against nearly impossible odds.

Suet624 i first read this years and years ago. My brother gave every member of my family a copy of the book for Christmas. For good reason. I read it again several years ago. This is a stunning journey. The ending in particular stays with me. aRowing across the ocean to get help. Hiking the mountains. In what kind of clothing??? Would we be able to do anything of the sort now? 3y
peaKnit I‘m a little anxious about the animal death part, I may have to go for it. It seems like a really interesting read. 3y
DGRachel @peaknit I‘ll put some notes under a spoiler comment and you can choose whether or not you want the additional info. ☺️ 3y
DGRachel All of the sled dog teams end of being killed at various points because there‘s not enough food to share. Most of the descriptions are matter of fact “Shackleton ordered it. So and so took them over a hill and shot them”, but there are a couple where the handler was really attacking to a dog that are gut-wrenching. I did almost bail on the book. You‘ve also got animals killed for food, but those are matter of fact, too, so easier to read. 3y

80% through the book and Lansing writes, “On April 27th, three days out from Elephant Island, their luck turned bad.”

Have you not been paying attention to the other 286 pages you‘ve already written?? Because d*mn. This is not where things start going wrong. We left bad luck behind 200 pages ago. We have reached catastrophic levels of “bad luck”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

What a coincidence! I just finished reading Endurance a few weeks ago, and now we get the news that his ship was found, over 100 years after it was lost.

Shackleton might be the modern-day Odysseus, enduring the trials set by an angry sea god. Yet, this is thoroughly-researched and documented history, taken from the party's log books and journals and from eye-witness accounts. Full review: https://lamp.works/bwl?s=B00IC8VF10

A rather incredible story. Shackleton must have been an inspiring man to have brought all of his men to safety. It was not until the credits that I realised the book was first published in 1959. Which made sense - I think the wholesale slaughter of animals may have been framed a little differently today. They did what they had to to survive but so many little penguins! Not to mention the dogs.

Definitely a fascinating story, but probably a bit skewed in Shackleton's favor. Another read to sort of even the viewpoints may be Shackleton's Captain (a story about Frank Worsley who was rather under-sung in my opinion in Endurance). Also a bit odd to me that Shackleton was more written about as a hero of this adventure across the Antarctic rather than a careless (having forgone many reputable warnings) thrill-seeker.

I've been meaning to read this book ever since Scott Kelly mentioned it as his inspiration to name his own memoir "Endurance". I'm alternating between this and homework today.

I'm going to need lots of coffee to get through everything that needs to be done. ? On a scale of 1-10 (10 being black coffee, 1 being basically creamer), how do you like your coffee? I used to be a solid 1, but now I'm more of a 7. ☕?

Suet624 This has to be my favorite book of all time. It‘s just amazing. 5y
Cinfhen I picked up a copy of this book at a past library sale. I think I‘m going to use it for #LiveAndLearn #Booked2020 5y
Buechersuechtling In terms of ☕️: I practice intermittent fasting (when I work, not when I‘m on vacation), so before I have completed my daily 16 foodless hours I‘ll have my coffee at 0; after, I stick with you at a solid 7. Which is funny because black coffee being too hot to drink immediately was the only reason that made me put milk in it: for temperature regulation. If the blend isn‘t too bitter I like black coffee pretty much. 5y

Ugh, you guys I'm usually a huge advocate for Thrift Books, but their quality has gone downhill. All of these were supposed to be "like new". Outliers is marked up and full of stickers, Slaughterhouse Five is annotated with the most asinine notes, the cover of Sleeping Giants is about to fall off & was supposed to be hardback, and I ordered a hardback of Endurance. I wouldn't have paid over $20 for these had I known what they'd be like. ??‍♀️

DaveGreen7777 Awww, that stinks! Sorry the books weren‘t as advertised! ☹️ 5y

Rachel.Rencher @Crazeedi I'm debating if I should or not. I kinda feel like this is a first world problems type of thing, but for real Outliers and Slaughterhouse Five will be hard to read because of how much writing is in them, so I probably should. 😅 5y

WOW! I started this audiobook basically because the cover looked interesting and it was available for immediate download from my library. Simon Prebble does an excellent job narrating (he is one of my dog Sawyer‘s favorite readers- long story)The book itself is amazing. The journey these men took was harrowing! What struck me the most was the men and their outlook in such monstrous circumstances. I found this very unexpectedly be quite uplifting.

Second book completed for #StaycationReadathon.

Although the Endurance expedition of 1914 was an astonishing feat of survival, the telling of it is quite repetitious. This is no fault of the author- by the men's own admissions in journal excerpts boredom was often as great a threat to survival as anything else. It's unquestionably heroic, but just not that interesting to read about.

HardcoverHearts This book has stayed with me since I originally read it in like 1997. No matter how horrible my day or week has been, I always default to - “Could be worse. I could have been on the Endurance.” 😂 7y
