Serena. Ron Rash
Serena. Ron Rash | Ron Rash
The year is 1929, & newlyweds George & Serena Pemberton arrive from Boston in the North Carolina mountains to create a timber empire. Serena is new to the mountains - but she soon shows herself the equal of any worker, overseeing crews, hunting rattlesnakes, even saving her husband's life in the wilderness.

#Movie2BookRecs #jenniferlawrence 9. Just don‘t bother with this movie…..

Klou Oh dear. What about the book? 3y
bio_chem06 @klou just couldn‘t do it. I thought it was so boring, just like the movie 3y

Had a lot of trouble with this filter for this picture. It was hard enough finding a filter that fits a book about a woman who plans to commit murder in North Carolina in the 1930s. It has text at the top so I couldn't reverse it so book title is reversed. The filter put a hat on the book cover. And Litsy images get severely cropped when loaded. Anyway, this is a book club book, sounds interesting, and I've enjoyed the first chapter.

I‘m not completely new but I haven‘t been extremely active and I thought this sounded fun! My answers:
1. Indiana, USA 2. Suspense - I like the ones that keep me guessing and surprise me at the end! 3. Serena by Ron Rash 4. Chocolate! 5. Two dachshunds 6. Suggestions for getting more involved with Litsy??? #litsywelcomewagon

JenlovesJT47 I would suggest following @LitsyHappenings to keep up with buddy reads, giveaways, etc. and @LitsySwaps if you are ever interested in joining a swap. Hope you are enjoying Litsy so far! 🤗💚 7y

Finished this last night! 4/5 even though it took me much longer to read than I expected. It was a slow burn book.

Moving on to SC for the #readingroadtrip

⭐⭐⭐⭐: slow burn of a deeply atmospheric book set in the timber business during the depression. Enter an evil female character with hints of MacBeth undertones and you've got this one pegged. #BooksToFilm #CharactersILoveToHate

My #julymostanticipated is going to be starting the Reader's Room #readingroadtrip! Today I'm starting Serena for my NC starting point to the road trip. Such a fun idea! #jubilantjuly

JenP Hope it's good! 7y
lynneamch Hope you're enjoying it. I thought it was engrossing and my book club had a good discussion about it. I didn't like the movie because they changed the ending. 7y
Kamisha @lynneamch Yeah, it's pretty good so far. It's interesting to me because the setting is where I grew up, so it's neat to know exactly which mountains and coves they're discussing. I've heard that about the movie, I think I'll probably avoid it! 7y

Powerful, ruthless, jealous Serena Pemberton leads her husbands logging company in the mountains of North Carolina in the 1930s. She won't let anything or anyone stand in the way of her ambition. An iconic villain in American Lit. #LitsyAtoZ

Ok, another Ron Rash novel, and it is not disappointing! I am not a good writer of reviews, but Ron Rash is just a great storyteller. Highly recommend this author. There is no connection between my big, sloppy pup and the story...just love posting him! #dogsoflitsy Also, love my new mini book light from #barringtonbooks !

Mackypup Glad the book jacket has a mylar cover. I don't think my library would appreciate the St. Bernard drool 😜 8y

Just discovered the @bookriot February challenge. Today's entry: favorite villain. Serena immediately came to mind. (And I still love this original cover.)

#riotgrams #appalachia #southernlit

mcctrish Ooh good one!!! 8y
SteveWJones @mcctrish It should've been a massive bestseller. I hate that the movie was such a disaster. I didn't even see it after I read how bad the reviews were. 8y
mcctrish I bought this book at a Smokey Mountains NP gift shop and LOVED it. Everybody I have pushed it on has felt the same way. I never saw the movie either. I had hoped the movie would get people reading it at least 8y

Day 4: Favorite Villain- Serena #riotgrams (The book is so much better than the movie)

Brenley This is the 3rd time I've heard about this book in 2 days- is this the re-telling of Macbeth? 8y
mcctrish @Brenley never heard the re-telling of Macbeth angle 🤔 but that makes sense. I bought the book at the Smokey Mountains NP gift shop ( had never heard of it) and LOVED it. Movie is time you can never get back 8y
SteveWJones Great minds think alike. ;-) (I posted her too and only now saw you had done so earlier.) 8y
Brenley @mcctrish I will remember that about the movie! 8y

I remember reading this a few years back and enjoying the story of a quirky woman who helps her husband run a ranch. I never saw the movie but Jennifer Lawrence was perfectly cast as Serena. On sale today for both Nook and Kindle, $1.99! #ebookdeal

Edit: my "Timehop" app today showed that 3 years ago today I reviewed this book! Freaky!!!!

So, here's the second stack of four on my nightstand. Lol, I have quite a bit to get to, but I'm not flummoxed about it. How does one eat an elephant? One bite at a time 😊. So, one page at a time it is for me 😎👌🏻. Anything stand out to you, my fellow bibliophile?

Gayan When in doubt always go for the King. 8y
KarouBlue @MrBook The Man In The High Castle was good ... But the show is amazing! 8y
ElizaTodd @MrBook I wanna read The Man in High Castle sooo bad! I'm waiting to read it first before I even approach the show. 8y

LeahBergen I have Serena on my shelf. 8y
Sweettartlaura The Man in the High Castle! Post-haste 😉 Promise you won't regret it 😊 8y
SharonGoforth Loved Serena!! 8y
Jessicav Another vote for The Man in the High Castle. It's great. 8y
ApoptyGina69 The Daemon Knows sounds interesting to me. I liked The Man in the High Castle. Finders Keepers is the second of three, so read Mr. Mercedes first. Have fun! 8y
itsbrb I made the mistake of watching the show first of Man in the High Castle. I loved it, but can't wait to read it. 8y
BookNotes You can't go wrong with Ron Rash. 8y
Dogearedcopy I think this is the first stack that you've posted where I haven't read at least one or two titles from! That said, I'm very much interested in 'Serena' (by Ron Rash) because it deals with an area and culture I'm very familiar with; and I've heard great things about the book here on @litsy! 8y
Magslhalliday Another Man in the High Castle vote here. Probably PKD's most structurally thoughtful books. 8y
Lizpixie Wow. You must have a huge nightstand!😍 I try to keep my books contained to my library mostly, though two or three have escaped to my bedroom.📚 8y
Sraexx I thought I was the only person in the world to read Rise of the Creative Class, a pretty interesting read but a little outdated now with the whole new internet world. 8y
Sarahr875 @Mamashep agreed. The ending was especially a sore spot for me. I loved the end of the book! 8y
Sarahr875 Have you read Finders Keepers yet? I read Mr Mercedes and surprisingly I did not love it. It is my least favorite of his, and that makes me sad because I usually love them. 8y
StellaDz Serena is also on my TBR shelf! 8y
wrenaymuhree Serena was just meh for me. I had a reeeeally hard time staying interested. That being said, the novel was definitely superior to the movie, which sucked. (Articulate, I know. 😜) 8y

MrBook @Gayan @ApoptyGina69 @Sarahr875 @Scurvygirl I've read Mr. Mercedes and loved it. Hopefully I remember the characters from it when reading FK, but, for once, this isn't a King book with a hundred characters to keep straight, lol. 8y
MrBook @ApoptyGina69 @fern Love love love Bloom 😁! @CherylRussell So I've heard 😊👍🏻! @Dogearedcopy Yay, new books for you 😎👍🏻👌🏻, which is tough for a hardcore reader such as yourself 😊🙌🏻. @Lizpixie 😆😁👏🏻 Yeah, it helps not having anything else on my nightstand. Wish my library was done 😕. @Sraexx #YouAreNotAlone 😎👌🏻🙌🏻!!! Yeah, this edition takes the Internet into account, I think 😊👍🏻. @Gleefulreader She's very popular 😊👍🏻👏🏻. 8y
Lizpixie @MrBook I for one cannot wait to see yours and @BookBabe library when it's finished! I wish I lived closer to you all instead of 10,000 miles away☹️ 8y
Sraexx @MrBook nice, I'll have to keep an eye out for it! 8y

MrBook @Lizpixie Aww, ditto that wonderful sentiment 😕! @Sraexx 😊👍🏻! 8y
8little_paws The rise and fall of American growth looks very interesting. I hadn't heard of it till now! 8y
MrBook @8little_paws 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! You rock! It's thick with very thin pages, lots of graphs and charts, and a bibliography/notes section/index over a hundred pages long: my kind of read 😎😉👌🏻. 8y

Just started "Serena" last night for my book club! My dog Tartt (after author Donna Tartt) has been using it as a headrest. Has anyone else read this?!

Well-ReadNeck Yes!!! My favorite Ron Rash, but I love his writing in general. My understanding is that he was a poet before he was a novelist. His writing is so lyrical. Hoping to see him Labor Day weekend at the Decatur Book Festival !!! #dbf2016 8y
