American Agent: A Maisie Dobbs Novel
American Agent: A Maisie Dobbs Novel | Jacqueline Winspear
31 posts | 28 read | 23 to read
Beloved heroine Maisie Dobbs, "one of the great fictional heroines" (Parade), investigates the mysterious murder of an American war correspondent in London during the Blitz in a page-turning tale of love and war, terror and survival. When Catherine Saxon, an American correspondent reporting on the war in Europe, is found murdered in her London digs, news of her death is concealed by British authorities. Serving as a linchpin between Scotland Yard and the Secret Service, Robert MacFarlane pays a visit to Maisie Dobbs, seeking her help. He is accompanied by an agent from the US Department of Justice--Mark Scott, the American who helped Maisie escape Hitler's Munich in 1938. MacFarlane asks Maisie to work with Scott to uncover the truth about Saxon's death. As the Germans unleash the full terror of their blitzkrieg upon the British Isles, raining death and destruction from the skies, Maisie must balance the demands of solving this dangerous case with her need to protect Anna, the young evacuee she has grown to love and wants to adopt. Entangled in an investigation linked to the power of wartime propaganda and American political intrigue being played out in Britain, Maisie will face losing her dearest friend--and the possibility that she might be falling in love again.

#BookReport I am really enjoying hanging out with Maisie Dobbs. And enjoyed Under Lock for #LMPBC. Almost done with the Hendrix which has been fun with all the 80‘s references and not too gross so far. I‘m way behind on FTMT but hope to catch up this week and The Magician wasn‘t holding my interest.

Weekly Forecast 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maisie Dobbs investigates again - this time searching for the murderer of a young female journalist. I feel like this was the most emotional I've ever seen the character, and found myself both smiling and in tears at multiple points. I loved it!

This is book 15 in the series and Maisie Dobbs is asked to discover why am American war correspondant was murdered in London. It has been a while since I read a book in this series. I do like them a lot. I haven't read the earlier ones though so maybe one day! #bookcovers

A young US American is murdered within hours after Maisie spent time with her. Interesting twists. As Maisie untangles this mystery, she continues to pursue her adoption of Annie. Oh, and is that a new love interest on the horizon? All this is during the London Blitz.

Another solid read in the Maisie Dobbs series. There is a great deal of sadness in these books, given the setting in London during wartime; but in this book, the author finally brings some happiness into Maisie‘s life again. I look forward to the next installment. #audiobook

KathyWheeler Oh good! I stopped reading for awhile because Maisie‘s life was just so sad! Now that I know things will look up for her again, I can go back to them. (edited) 5y
Louise @KathyWheeler No kidding! I started to think the author must have an extremely melancholic personality! 😩 Thankfully, there is light at the end of the tunnel in this book! 🌞 5y
KathyWheeler @Louise It was becoming too much for me. As much as I loved these books, I just couldn‘t take the sadness anymore. I‘m glad I can resume reading them. 5y

I haven‘t loved every Maisie Dobbs book I‘ve read in the last few years and considered giving up the series, but this was good. I love the character development in this series. I think it‘s unusual to find that in a long-running series.

Also, I ruined this library book on accident when a water bottle I thought was completely empty got left open in my bag 😞.

mcipher Oh I hate that! I usually ruin mine with coffee. 🙄 6y

I can‘t believe I‘ve been reading about Maisie Dobbs for 15 books now! Wow! That right there tells you what a wonderful series it is! The American Agent was no exception! I love diving back into London with these characters I‘ve grown to love and feel like I‘m right there experiencing every thing with them. I loved the ending which honestly has me itching for more! One of the best WWI/WWII historical fiction series!

SassyBookworm @Talewaggingreads this was our first visit! We are at the Seaside and racquet club. It was one of the only places I could find that had separate bed for my girls. Being 15 & 6 I didn‘t think making them sleep together would be smart. Luckily this has them in the same room but with a twin bed each. I‘d love some suggestions on must do things and restaurants! We visited the Gulf Coast Zoo today, fabulous for 7 acres! 6y
Talewaggingreads @SassyBookworm yes! Love that little zoo! They will be moving shortly to a larger space. Next time, do rent bikes and tour Gulf State Park. Fabulous biking trails, Nature Center, and a wide diversity of ecosystems. Just beautiful! Also the Naval Air Station just west of Pcola. Catch the Blue Angels' practice and tour the museum.💕 6y

Maisie Dobbs has long been a favorite of mine. Now 15 books later, after all that she's already been through in her life, we catch up with Maisie during the London Blitz in WWII, where she's solving the murder of a young female journalist and just maybe re-opening her heart. If you've never picked these up I'd highly recommend doing so. Maisie is the epitome of what can happen when a good writer does well with character development.

I‘m in the minority of this review....this is my first of the series, but I needed more. It felt formulaic and like an adult version of Encyclopedia Brown. Maybe if I had read all the other books, I‘d feel differently, but there‘s such great literature out there that is on my list that I‘m not going to invest the time in this series.

A book lovers quandary...
After @Andrew65 introduced me to this series I totally binged it and couldn't get enough. Then I had to wait and wait and wait. I missed these characters so much. Well the next book is here. Do I dive right in or wait and savor?? Who am I kidding?!?!? Welcome back Maisie!

Seriously, how does this author do it? Every. Single. Book. Is better than the previous one. Love Maisie Dobbs and so grateful to make this journey with her. In this one, she investigates the murder of an American reporter, while the Blitz is in full force and her personal life is in limbo. 💜💜💜 I highly recommend this series!!!!

rretzler I absolutely loved this book and love series too. I will admit that the first few were a little uneven - when Maisie was semi-psychic, but once that faded away, they have been fantastic ever since! Have you tried Susan Elia MacNeal‘s Maggie Hope series? It reminds me a little of this one. 6y
Booknerd2 @rretzler I have not but I definitely will now. Thanks for the recommendation. 6y
rretzler It‘s not quite a powerful as the Maisie Dobbs series, but Maggie Hope is a strong, intelligent female character during WWII solving mysteries with friend and family complications. 6y

Eggs I‘m intrigued by Maisie Dobbs and love the cover art but haven‘t read one yet 6y
rretzler @Eggs It is a very good series and I recommend that you start with the first in the series if you ever do read them as there is a lot of background and character building in each of the books. However, the first two or three books can be a little strange in that it is mentioned that Maisie has a bit of psychic ability. This can be off-putting to some readers, although it is not a big part of the stories. Fortunately, it is not continued for long. 6y

Another great entry in the Maisie Dobbs series. This one starts at the beginning of the London Blitz when a young female reporter who rides along with Maisie and Priscilla on their ambulance runs is found murdered. For many reasons, after this book, Maisie‘s life will never be the same. If you‘ve never read this series, Winspear is amazing and takes the time to be historically accurate. 4.5/5.0⭐️ #2019 Thanks Edelweiss and Harper for the ARC

Winspear's Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite fictional characters and I recommend them in my libraries and on my blog. The American Agent signals the true beginning of a new chapter in Maisie's life, and is every bit as good as previous entries in the series. The mystery here is secondary to the bigger story of Maisie moving on with her life, although it is handled with the same cleverness and wit we have come to expect from Winspear.

MallenNC I've read some of these but out of order. I liked what I've read so I want to start over and read in the right order. 6y
daena I‘ve been interested in reading these Maisie Dobbs for a while now. Could you recommend which book I should begin with? (edited) 6y
PatriciaU @daena definitely begin with Maisie Dobbs, the first in the series, and read in order. There are events that build up and occur throughout the series and if you read out of order, you‘ll miss a lot of context. 6y
