⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m many years late, but finally read this, then immediately binged Serial. All the details, all the research. Y‘all, I still don‘t know.

What do you think??

TheBookHippie I don‘t KNOW!!!! 🤯 2y
SamAnne Don‘t know!!! 2y
Bookpearl I don‘t know!! I was on the fence and still think about this. 2y

Cortg His murder conviction was recently thrown own out by a judge and then the appeals court reinstated his conviction this year. So much back and forth with this case. 2y
britt_brooke @Cortg I saw that! It‘s so wild. I just don‘t know what to think. 2y
britt_brooke @TheBookHippie @SamAnne @Bookpearl I am so torn! We may never know. 2y
TheBookHippie @Cortg I saw that! I stillll have no clue. 2y
Tamra I recall after listening to the podcast I felt there was sufficient reasonable doubt. 2y
Hooked_on_books This book made clear to me that there was reasonable doubt. So I was glad to see him finally go free. I have no idea if he did it or not, but I lean toward no. 2y
britt_brooke @Tamra @Hooked_on_books Legally, that makes sense. I want to lean toward no as well, but idk. I don‘t think enough time was spent looking at the new boyfriend. (edited) 2y
Megabooks Definitely reasonable doubt imo after reading this and listening to Serial. I don‘t think he ever should‘ve been convicted. Have you ever fallen down the Michael Peterson rabbit hole? That‘s another one I‘m unsure about. 2y
britt_brooke @Megabooks No, I haven‘t, but maybe I should! 😂 2y
Megabooks Theres a 13-part doc on Netflix and an HBO series based on it. I was in Durham when it happened and knew a lot of the same people. I covered some of the pre-trial for Duke‘s student newspaper. (The actual trial was after I graduated.) and I covered his run for mayor before his wife‘s death. There‘s a lot of angles to it. A worthy rabbit hole. The doc is called the staircase because she was found dead at the bottom of one. 2y
Megabooks And so was another woman he was the last to see who looks eerily like his wife… 2y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Oh wow, must be so odd / interesting to have real time, local memories. 2y
Megabooks It is. Just so weird. But I still find my opinion about his guilt going back and forth. 2y
Bookpearl @britt_brooke Indeed! I so believe if he didn‘t kill her he knows who did. 2y
britt_brooke @Bookpearl I wonder if he knows, too! 2y
CallMeIshmael You just now binged serial??? I was hooked and waiting for episode drops back in the day. I believe he is truly innocent despite the Nesha call lol 2y
britt_brooke @CallMeIshmael Yes, lol! 😅 The crazy thing is that I managed to avoid hearing any details of this case over the last several years. I still don‘t know what to think. 2y

ANYONE ELSE SEE THIS?! 🎉🎉🎉 I cried watching the video his cousin took for her IG page of him getting out of the car at home! I wanted to run up and hug him so hard and never let go. I have no idea how she managed not to. I‘m guessing it only lasted as long as the video did. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 Another video showed him in the fridge at home, trying out leftovers. He deserves a LOT of good meals after 20+ years in prison food.

batsy I was just thinking about this earlier today. Came across this tweet https://twitter.com/Lisatweets444/status/1572050133549981696?t=3pCgIylnv5q52xO0R... 2y
GingerAntics @batsy awww, it won‘t let me finish reading it because I don‘t have a twitter account. 2y
TheBookHippie ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ 2y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie there was a huge group of people outside the courthouse when he left. One of his fellow inmates was also exonerated, and he took this video of everyone trying to get his attention and comments, but this guy who was also going through hell with him yells “Adnan I love you man!” and that‘s the one person in all the chaos he acknowledged. I‘m really hoping the last 20 years in prison hasn‘t broken either of them. 2y

This is an excellent, and disturbing, book. The extensive detailed investigation that Rabia Chaudry has conducted into the case is remarkable, all the more so given her personal involvement and what she had going on in her own life. The police investigation into Hae Min Lee's murder was at best incompetent, and there is much to suggest institutional racism and corruption. Adnan Syed - and Hae Min Lee's family - were badly let down by the state.

Cortg My sister was addicted to the serial podcast about this story when it came out. She was in Shanghai and wiukd have friends over to listen! It happened not too far from where I live now. I tried listening to this book on audio but I couldn‘t get into it. Maybe I should try reading a physical copy. Glad you enjoyed it. I hear the lack of evidence and investigation is really disturbing. Baltimore‘s a shit show but I keep rooting for its clean up. 3y
arlenefinnigan @Cortg it's always worth trying a different format. Miscarriages of justice happen everywhere but some of the elements of the police investigation seem to go way beyond simple incompetence, some of the details are sinister. 3y

I've followed Rabia Chaudry on twitter for a while now, so I was curious to read her book. It was very interesting and upsetting. I will continue to follow Adnan Syed's case. I'm also considering going back and listening to the Serial podcast.

Finished this one up at lunch. Finally! I normally dont do so good with books over 8+ but for thr most part this one kept my attention. I loved Serial when it covered this case so I def was interested in this book. It was very well done and I learned a ton of new info I didnt know before! Its just such a sad story.

riversong153 Interesting. I‘m not sure if i want to pick this up. I watched the podcast and the documentary. I don‘t think we‘ll ever have all the facts. It is indeed a sad story. 4y
Elizabeth2 Being from MD, very near Baltmore, I listened to the podcast with such great interest. It is a sad story every way you look at it. I‘m struck by the loyalty and conviction of the author, his friend, who is still fighting for him. I honestly didn‘t know what to believe when the podcast ended. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a good book to read in order to learn more about what happened during the trial of Adnan, the focus of the podcast Serial. But I did feel like the author was very biased so there were parts that I wasn‘t sure if I could believe because she knew Adnan and his family. This book also causes me a lot of anxiety and frustration because this is another example of the unjustness of the justice system

I 100% believe that Adnan was wrongfully convicted and I hope he gets his new trial soon. So many blunders and missed opportunities for him which most were no fault of his own. I've been following this case since the Serial podcast series.

EDIT: While I am still quite behind in my reading for first quarter of #booked2019 I also sometimes don‘t know what day, month, or year it is and now realize that I still have another month to finish the first quarter. 🤪

For anyone who‘s been following this case as closely as I have - new doc premiering on HBO!

WhatThePuck This story is crazy. I'm still on season 1 of Undisclosed, but I did finish Serial. I was recently watching a true crime documentary that was talking about cell towers and I rolled my eyes after the in-depth interview about cell towers not being a reliable source like GPS. 6y
FreeReadAndWrite @WhatThePuck oh man yeah I really recommend Undisclosed. Serial got a lot wrong that they correct. Also, they‘re just a bomb team of attorneys. They‘re the ones who found the evidence that actually got Adnan a new trial, & I think I‘ve only listened to one season where they didn‘t uncover new evidence for someone to use. Their listeners even got an execution stayed the day of. Changing peoples‘ lives for real. 6y
WhatThePuck @FreeReadAndWrite I'm trying. I used to have a lot of alone time at work. Now I share my office. Lol. Plus I'm behind on my audio books. Hopefully when it starts to warm up again I can get some more listening in. I'm pretty sure the last episode I listened to was the cell tower info. That the fax cover sheet even said the information was not to be used for location services. 6y

Very excited when I saw this in the conclusion, because I‘d been thinking about this all along. There is a small chance that Adnan did kill Hae, but evidence is starting to show that chance is smaller and smaller to the point of being so negligible as to be laughable. If this applies to any case it‘s Adnan‘s.

It‘s clear to me that the state of Maryland is in no way concerned if Adnan was falsely or even illegally convicted. They‘re not concerned if he‘s been falsely imprisoned for 20 years. They just want to keep his case in the win column. They‘ve lost too many wins lately as it is.

There is actually no proof the timesheet was NOT falsified and the restrictions within the system (that still existed when this book was written 15+ years later) meant that Don‘s timesheet was falsified BEFORE anyone but the killer knew Hae was dead and not just missing. Oh and it was falsified under a manager he was not allowed to work under, because she was his MOTHER.

The evidence that the car was found elsewhere, not by Jay, then moved to the location where Jay “found it”, where Adnan supposedly put it is very compelling...and also explains why his defence attorney was only given black and white photos of the crime scene and car.

The thing that stands out to me here is the fact implicit in the one word “child.” He was just a kid. He was barely an adult when he was convicted. There is nothing but flimsy circumstantial evidence to tie him to the murder at this point.

So this was Adnan‘s mentor and his alibi whiteness, unfortunately. The dude was trouble and really hurt Adnan. It didn‘t help that the police possibly (probably) let him off of the hook for a child molestation charge in exchange for laying low and not testifying at the trial.

As a side note, when this book was written, this guy was being investigated for sexually assaulting his dental patients.

In doing research online, I found photos of him that are more recent. He‘s definitely not the same baby faced kid in this photo. He‘s grown up A LOT since his trial.
I spent a lot of time since I finished this book writing a long, detailed review of this book. I still don‘t know if he did it or it, but I have my suspicions. I believe his friend Rabia did justice to his story, her journey to help him, and managed to tell his side of the story.

GingerAntics There is just no way to do this book (or my review) justice in the comments. It would just take way too many comments to get it all in. I really hate to do this, but it‘s best for everyone if I just supply a link to my GR review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2681010183 #rabiachaudry #adnansstory 6y

violabrain Did you listen to season one of the Undisclosed podcast? They go into the legal nitty-gritty of this case and after listening to it, there is no doubt my mind that Adnan is innocent. 6y
GingerAntics @violabrain I haven‘t listened to any podcasts. I generally suck at them. I‘ve looked into Serial and Undisclosed. I genuinely believe he is innocent now after the final chapters of the book, I just know there is still the DNA out there and without any definitive smoking gun either way, there is always the possibility. I‘m just open to the idea he maybe did it, but I don‘t think he did. 6y

From my notes on this book. #3 is the one that bothers me.

I have no idea if he did it or not. Two people, possibly three do. One is dead. The other is Adnan. The third, if Adnan didn‘t do it, is Hae‘s killer. I have my suspicions, I will admit to leaning a little more one direction than the other.

To everyone who claims “oh he did it, he did it” and “the ‘innocenters‘ are all nuts,” what would you do if the DNA proved him innocent? What if what was already tested wasn‘t Adnan‘s, and that‘s why they stopped the rest of the tests? If it comes back as his, I will admit that my suspicions were wrong and I was hoodwinked. Would any of these people do the same?
#RabiaChaudry #adnansstory #DNAdoesntlie

batsy Wow. I had no idea that they could do that (put a "hold" on testing). I was consumed by this case when I was listening to Serial and it also left me feeling strongly for Adnan's innocence; I need to read this soon. 6y
Crazeedi This book sounds fascinating 6y
GingerAntics @batsy neither did I, or more accurately, I didn‘t think anyone would want to. It lends credence to the idea that they made their decision before the even had a body. Like I said, he could have done it, but I‘m leading toward he probably didn‘t. I want the results of those DNA tests. It can take a decade or more to get that stuff done, though. 6y
See All 7 Comments
GingerAntics @Crazeedi it really is. It‘s a little depressing at times, but then Adnan himself comes in and his mindset about all of this is so positive. 6y
GingerAntics @batsy did you know that at one point, he‘d been such a model prisoner and the librarian trusted him, she had him take boxes to her car...alone. He was out in the parking lot, keys to a car in hand. He put the boxes in the car and walked right back into the prison. That‘s not the action of a guilty man to me. If he just wanted to get away with murder he would have gotten in the car and left. He didn‘t. 6y
batsy That's really something. Wasn't aware of that incident but on the podcast, during the host's phone conversations with him, it was really hard to imagine him doing what he was supposed to have done. I'd read about his good behaviour in prison. 6y
GingerAntics @batsy I read one review that claimed the cadence of is speech was proof he was lying. What? Some people are nuts. Parts of the book are actually written by him. One of the things he mentions is that after the trial people were saying he manipulated people and lied, and how that really effected him because he‘d never done either. So now he‘s just nice to people and he‘s always the same way no matter what, so no one can say he manipulated anyone. 6y

This is the face of a kid that got screwed by some incredibly questionable, and possibly illegal, detective work. 20% of the way through the book and there are already WAY too many holes and total BS things in the “case” against him. @Samplergal I completely agree with you and I haven‘t read it all yet. The reviewer who claimed this book is trying to point that finger at anyone to get him out of trouble is total BS.
#adnansstory #rabiachaudry

GingerAntics One guy makes a statement, claiming to be close friends with him and supposedly he told this kid he did it, his girl friend ends up making herself and her boyfriend accessories after the fact (nothing happens to them) but THEY DON‘T EVEN KNOW HIS NAME!!! They keep calling him Adnar. WTF?! 6y
Amiable This is why the Serial podcast is so good. If I remember correctly, Rabia is a friend of Adnan's, yes? I haven't read this book, but I imagine there's a bias because of her relationship with him. Serial is more balanced in its reporting. Listening to it is a wild trip --one episode you are convinced he is innocent, then in the next there's evidence mentioned that makes you wonder if he's really guilty. In the end I still couldn't decide! (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @Amiable you‘re not the first person to suggest the podcast, I just suck at podcasts. Great read for the true crime fan. I have no doubt this kid didn‘t do it. Knowing what I do about the area, his lawyer, who was a complete mess, the local politics, The Baltimore Police Department, I have no doubt that there was some hinky crap occurring. After 9/11, the area was not at all motivated to listen to a Muslim in an area surrounded by Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid headquarters, Fort Meade and NSA. #booked2019 #podcast

Samplergal The area after 9/11 was terribly racist toward that enclave of Muslims and local news revealed hate crimes to Muslim owned businesses and families at that point. Prior to 9/11, there were many people in the community who resented the highly educated community “taking jobs”. Obviously, I wasn‘t there, but I can see the Baltimore police making certain “they got their man”. Remember Freddie Grey. 6y
heikemarie I‘m less sure. It doesn‘t help me that I find Adnan extremely unlikeable when he speaks so it may be hindering my judgement 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Samplergal @heikemarie Why did you find him unlikable.? Curious as I found him pretty likeable. 6y
See All 14 Comments
heikemarie @Samplergal He seemed evasive and obnoxious when I listened to the podcast. It‘s been a few years so I wish I could be more specific but I definitely remember leaving the podcast feeling that way. 6y
Samplergal @heikemarie ah. I haven‘t listened to the podcast. Maybe I‘d change my thoughts. So many things to listen to now. I feel like I went down a rabbit hole now. 6y
gradcat I read this book, but I had to suspend some belief because Rabia wrote it, and she is far from impartial. I do, however, agree with you 100 percent about the atmosphere post-9/11. Did you see that ridiculous scene in the courtroom where the prosecutor tried to claim that “this is happening all the time with” Muslims/Pakistanis? So racist! 6y
heikemarie @Samplergal and I need to read the book and see if it sways me! There‘s always more to read and listen to 😬 6y
Samplergal @gradcat Yes! Knowing the area he lived in, I was supervisor of speech language pathologists at all the schools mentioned in the book. I know the neighborhood, and even pre 9/11 other community members were resentful of the Muslims, Sheikhs, and Hindu. And didn‘t know the differences. One of the elementary schools was 95% Asian, mostly Pakistani. They were mostly doctors, scientists, and researchers who were often discriminated against. Sad. 6y
emilyhaldi @heikemarie you should definitely read this book if you‘re interested in the case! You get a bit more insight from Adnan. He explains how scared he was to open up to Sarah Koenig during those interviews bc he didn‘t want to appear too friendly, as if he was trying to sway her, but he didn‘t want to come off rude either. He really struggled with how to present himself in the least harmful way to his case. It certainly made me feel for him 💔 6y
emilyhaldi And I agree with you @Samplergal I am convinced he‘s innocent!! I thought the info that Rabia & friends uncovered after the Serial podcast was particularly fascinating. 6y
heikemarie @emilyhaldi he actually addressed that in the podcast as well and I wasn‘t particularly impressed by the explanation. The way he responded when questions about details of the case not consistent with his version was what made him unlikeable. I personally think it‘s very easy to make yourself seem reasonable in text, and a lot harder to do when speaking, so who knows. I tend to sway toward believing he was innocent, as you all do. 6y
emilyhaldi @heikemarie you have a much better memory than me! I don‘t remember that part of the podcast but I also remember liking Adnan from the start for whatever reason! I almost want to listen to the podcast again after reading this book... ugh, I just wish we had more answers! 6y
Reviewsbylola I definitely think there‘s way too much reasonable doubt for him to have been convicted. 6y
Cinfhen Jumping in @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola @gradcat @heikemarie @Samplergal I think there is enough reasonable doubt to question Adnan‘s guilt and for the jury to reach their verdict so swiftly tells me 1. His lawyer was incompetent 2. There was tremendous amount of bias towards him/ his ethnicity 3. The judge did not instruct the jury properly because no way was there any proof or motive for premeditated murder!!! I think he should be released (edited) 6y

Rabia must have thought this book was #myshot at getting Adnan‘s full story out to the public (well, in addition to her blog, twitter feed, and podcast!). And she did a great job of communicating the many details of this case and the doubt that pervades Adnan‘a accusation. I found the post-serial information the most fascinating, as I have already listened to the podcast. And I gotta say, Rabia convinced me of Adnan‘s innocence!

emilyhaldi I just wish we had more answers 🙏🏻 and hope someday we will. But ultimately, there are too many things that don‘t add up here and too much reasonable doubt to convict Adnan. I hope his upcoming appeal trial gets to the bottom of some of the judicial injustice. #musicalnewyear 6y
Cinfhen I‘m not 100% convinced he׳s innocent but he definitely needs a new trial and I feel like all the time spent behind bars, 20 years should be considered time served (edited) 6y

Reviewsbylola As I said before, I didn‘t listen to Serial, but I am def convinced there is enough reasonable doubt. 6y
alisiakae I listened to Serial but haven‘t read this yet. I‘m in agreement with everyone else that he needs a new trial. 6y
L_auren Kind of think he‘s guilty and even so, he should NEVER have been convicted. We can‘t put people behind bars on so little 😭 6y

My latest audiobook. This occurred in my home area and remember this murder and trial. Having some connections via the schools I used to supervise, this really impacted the Muslim community in 1999. And then 9/11 happened... I am likely going to love this one. #booked2019 #relatedtoapodcast.

GingerAntics You‘re telling me someone murdered that sweet face? I can‘t even. What is with people. Clearly he was a huge threat with his dreams of his future and being alive. 🙄 6y
Cinfhen Just read this, I thought it was really good. I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts. 6y
Cinfhen @GingerAntics that sweet face is the accused murderer!!!! 6y

GingerAntics @Cinfhen WHAT?! That‘s even worse. What the hell?! What is with kids killing each other?! What happened? I may have to read this book now just to know. 6y
Cinfhen He was accused of killing his HS girlfriend ~ from most accounts Adnan was wrongfully convicted because of his ethnicity. @GingerAntics 6y
Cinfhen It‘s a really fascinating read @GingerAntics I don‘t want to say too much to sway @Samplergal or you!! Definitely read it or listen to the podcast that breaks down the whole case. 6y
GingerAntics @Cinfhen crap that‘s bad. It‘s downloading from the library right now. I‘ve got to read this. Poor kid. There is a podcast? I need to go find that, too. 6y
Cinfhen You can listen @GingerAntics Just Google Adnan‘s Story on Serial 6y
Kaye I‘m not 100 % sure he‘s innocent. If you only read the book you‘re getting a swayed opinion. I‘m not saying he‘s guilty either. And as far as ethnicity , his girlfriend was also of a different race so I don‘t think that was it. The part that puzzles me is the WHY. And there‘s someone involved who changes his story repeatedly. RED FLAG 🚩 I‘d still like to know the WHY then it‘d all fall into place. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @kaye the way is always my first question. Not knowing that is frustrating. I‘ll be interested to read this. 6y
Cubanmommy95 Oh I listened to he authors podcasts last year when I was listening to Serial. I'm going to have to check this book out. I am so so fascinated by this story 6y
Kaye It‘ll be interesting to hear your opinions. I do believe he deserves a new trial with a good experienced lawyer. I‘m not convinced at all that it was a racially biased result. His girlfriend was a different race , some of the best friends were of more races , so it seemed like many ethnicities were involved in the trial as witnesses , accused, etc. The book didn‘t convince me an innocent person is behind bars. It convinced me he needs a new trial 6y
Samplergal I‘m fascinated by this as well. I know the malls, the schools, the mosque. I remember one of my Pakistani translators talking to us about this family. I just stumbled on this from the podcast that was recommended to me because of being from Baltimore! 6y
Samplergal I‘m about 65% of the way through this book and knowing of many in the legal community that were involved, this kid needs a new trial immediately. Having not finished this book yet, I do know the locale from the Best Buy and the high school and there is NO WAY the timing of this crime could have occurred. It is so congested there and Social Security lets out about the same time. Traffic is a monster at that time. What a cluster this case is. 6y

I was really caught up not only in Adnan‘s Story but in Rabia Chaudry‘s story too. Because whether intentional or not, she has inserted herself deep into this tale of corrupt behavior. While I had a few moments of misgivings, Im 100% certain Adnan did not receive an adequate trial nor did the prosecution prove beyond reasonable doubt. I certainly do not buy premeditated murder. I think time served has been met. #Booked2019 #RelatedToPodcast

jpmcwisemorgan I listened to the podcast. I think his trial could have been handled better and that there were too many “well, what about...” types of things that the ball was dropped on. Based on what I heard in the podcast I don‘t know that if I were on the jury I could return a guilty verdict because I had doubts. That doesn‘t mean that he didn‘t do it, but I don‘t know that the case against him was strong enough. I‘m also not sure that he acted alone. 6y
Melissa_J Is it necessary to know the Serial background before reading this book? 6y
alisiakae I feel the same as @jpmcwisemorgan. I‘m curious if the book covers the same info as the podcast, or has more recent updates? 6y
See All 13 Comments
jpmcwisemorgan @Melissa_J @4thhouseontheleft I‘ve not read the book yet but I found the podcast to be really engaging. I‘d recommend listening to it because it was well done. I tried the second season, which is a different case, and it didn‘t draw me in as much as this one did. 6y
cathysaid I agree he did not receive an adequate trial nor did the prosecutors prove their case. As to his innocence...I just can‘t decide. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
alisiakae @jpmcwisemorgan I really enjoyed the podcast! But felt the same with the 2nd season, I never finished it. 6y
Karkar I read this book and have been meaning to go back and listen to the podcast. 6y
Cinfhen @jpmcwisemorgan @cathysaid @4thhouseontheleft @Melissa_J @Karkar This book is written from the PoV that Adnan was framed by the cops (because of his ethnicity) and it‘s supported pretty well by Chaudry. Serial presented all the facts & remained neutral, allowing for one to reach their own conclusion. The book doesn‘t really shed new light it‘s more of a repetitive pounding of Chaudry‘s belief. There are still some holes in his case 👇🏼 6y
Cinfhen But enough reasonable doubt to question his incarceration. If you haven‘t read or listened to the podcast, I suggest Serial ( it‘s more neutral) @Melissa_J (edited) 6y
Megabooks I‘ve done the podcast and book as well. For sure there was reasonable doubt. More so than the Peterson case!! 6y
emilyhaldi I agree with you, certainly enough reasonable doubt not to convict him. I find it shocking that the jury came back with their verdict after a few short hours, but I wonder how many of them were so worn out by Gutierrez at that point that they just wanted it over!!! Curious if you have a theory as to what actually happened with Hae??? 6y
Cinfhen I waiver between Dan or Adnan @emilyhaldi @Megabooks More towards Dan. I‘m still not sure how Jay plays into all of this. Im not sure I buy he was fed all the info. I think Hae knew her killer and it was totally accidental in a moment of rage/passion. Maybe even rough sex ?!? But either way, Adnan deserves a new trial. (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola I completely agree! 6y

More than just Adnan‘s story, this is also a fascinating look at Islam and the Muslim community. I‘m enjoying Rabia Chaudry‘s perspective and insight. I understand this book is written from the POV that Adnan is innocent but so far(only 25%in) there is no evidence that ties him to the crime.

Cinfhen Thought I‘d sweeten the post with a little peppermint bark @GatheringBooks ❣️😜 6y
melbeautyandbooks Love peppermint bark! 6y
violabrain If you listen to the Undisclosed podcast (season one) it is infuriatingly obvious that Adnan is innocent. His case was a gross miscarriage of justice. 6y
See All 13 Comments
Kaye Will be interested in your opinion when done. I agree, the podcast is great and will fill in a bit more info. The book is more detailed but it‘s swayed in one direction, of course. 6y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen oh em gee! my absolute fave!!! 6y
emilyhaldi I started reading the book yesterday then switched to audio so I could do some things around the house and am enjoying both. When I got to Adnan's letter to Rabia where he requests word search puzzles my heart just broke for him😭 if we assume for a minute that he is innocent, his tragic circumstances are too much to consider!! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m going to listen to the podcast after I finish the book @violabrain @kaye and I agree @emilyhaldi he‘s been incarcerated for half his life already😢 6y
Cinfhen @emilyhaldi I‘m really enjoying Rabia‘s personal story of her family‘s dedication and determination to prove Adnan‘s innocence. I‘m finding that aspect of the story much more compelling. 6y
Cinfhen I do have mixed feelings right now @emilyhaldi about his innocence but 💯his attorney effed up!!! 6y
emilyhaldi I‘m halfway through and so far I‘m pretty convinced of his innocence!!! Either way, no denying Gutierrez did a terrible job defending him. The moments when the judge had to cut her off for her rambling tirades made me cringe 😣 6y
emilyhaldi I just wrote a long comment and it got deleted 🤔 ugh, well mostly I still think Adnan is innocent.. the part that always bothered me in the podcast and now the book is that Jay was able to take the police to Hae‘s car!!! That has always made me think Jay must have been involved and confuses the whole case. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m nearly done @emilyhaldi and I agree, Jay is bad news! I wonder about the car too. I still think there was enough reasonable doubt NOT TO CONVICT and IF Adnan did strangle Hae it was NOT premeditated and I feel like he‘s served his time on manslaughter or some lesser charge. 6y
Megabooks Gutierrez did an awful job!! I read the book two years ago and listened to the podcast before that and I was shocked by her poor, scattered performance!! @emilyhaldi @Cinfhen 6y

Mdargusch How does it compare to serial? Does it seem repetitive? 6y
Cinfhen I‘m only about 15% in and this is obviously from the perspective that Adnan is innocent but it‘s super compelling and not all that repetitive. Although my memory is shoddy at best @Mdargusch I‘m enjoying the journalistic styling so far. 6y

So I never listened to Serial. I know, I know. I decided to give this one a shot anyway and I‘m glad I did. Rabia Chaudry is the sister of Adnan‘s best friend, and therefore has personal insight into the case and the Syed family. She lays out the case clearly (and there is a lot going on!!) and discusses how Serial came to be and what‘s happened with the case since then.

So now I need to know—do you think Adnan killed Hae Min Lee?!?

Amandajoy I don‘t know. I listened to Serial and there were a lot of holes. I think I‘d probably find him not guilty if I were on a jury. 6y
Victoriahoperose I think that he was involved possibly but I don‘t think he actually killed her. I just think it‘s weird that Jay knew the location. I feel like the story is flipped. Like maybe Jay killed her and Adnan helped him cover it up. The thing that gets me is the boyfriend at the time and all the discrepancies with him. What do you think?? 6y
Reviewsbylola I felt similarly at first but once the author delved more into Jay as a person and the reward money he received, I came to believe that he had nothing to do with the murder and only went along with where the police led him. Chaudry goes really far into police misconduct and it seems pretty apparent that they just wanted to pin the crime on Adnan. I think Don did it personally. @Victoriahoperose 6y
See All 16 Comments
Reviewsbylola I agree, I think that if you go solely on reasonable doubt, Adnan definitely should have never been convicted. As to whether or not he actually murdered Hae, I still feel pretty strongly that he didn‘t but I doubt we‘ll ever know for sure. @Amandajoy 6y
Mdargusch Wait, what?!?! You never listened to Serial? Crazy girl. 6y
Reviewsbylola I think I was the only one in the family. I remember you guys talking about it. So do you think Adnan did it? @Mdargusch 6y
Hooked_on_books I didn‘t listen to Serial either but did read this book. I don‘t think Adnan killed her. I don‘t really believe he was involved, either. Too many holes. He should never have been convicted. I think Don is the most likely culprit. 6y
batsy I always thought it was Don. The podcast was riveting, and I've been meaning to read this! 6y
Hazel0303 I‘m so glad you liked this! My heart breaks for All the families and for Adnan. I don‘t think he did it. I really don‘t. Beyond that feeling, I don‘t think the evidence points to him beyond a reasonable doubt so I would say not guilty if on a jury. I think Don was involved and Jay seems to know something about it. 6y
Hazel0303 I‘m also glad Adnan has a competent lawyer now and if memory serves the innocence project is involved, right? 6y
Reviewsbylola Yes, they are. Adnan currently has an appeal in with the Maryland Court of Special Appeals I think and is supposed to have a hearing in the next few months. So we‘ll see what happens! @Hazel0303 6y
swishandflick I thought all of that craziness about Don's mom being the one to secure his alibi, clocking himbin at a location where he didn't usually work and where she was the manager, was hella fishy. I personally don't think Adnan did it, though I can't say I feel certain. But I DEFINITELY don't think the state met it's burden of proof. 6y
Reviewsbylola I agree with everything you said! As the fact that the timecard had to have been falsified by the end of the same pay period is especially suspicious. @swishandflick 6y
Mdargusch I could never decide 6y
Hollie I don‘t think he did it, and I agree with @swishandflick that they didn‘t meet the burden of proof. 6y
Jess7 Omg! You must listen to Serial! I‘ve listened to Serial and Undisclosed the podcast Chaudry did with two others). I‘ve read the intercept article about Jay and I read this book. All that said, I think Adnan did it, but it‘s not clear to me that the jury should have convicted him based on the evidence submitted at trial. 6y
