This is one of the many books on my tbr…

“On the eve of eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall's presentation to the queen, one of her family's housemaids disappears—and Helen is drawn into the shadows of Regency London. There, she meets Lord Carlston, one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of demons infiltrating every level of society. Dare she ask for his help, when his reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes?”

This book is sat on my possibly infinite ebook tbr 🫣
Sounds like a regency paranormal romance, and it may get bumped further up the list… or not haha

Started fine, but then ugh. The MC was unbelievable (a “smart” girl who ❤️ to read & learn except about her new powers? She accepts the rules some guy her dead mother says not to trust told her?). I wanted to give up when it was revealed that demons can get power by masturbating. 1 star only for great narration & well formed sentences. Helen gains super powers to fight demons & must decide to join the Dark Days club or try to live a normal life.
This was so slow going, but immersive. I loved eveery moment of Lady Helen's world and can't wait for the sequels!
My covers in this series do not match, which is somewhat of a pet peeve of mine. I‘m not fond of the newer trend of publishers changing cover designs mid-series in hopes of selling more copies. Personally, I like the design on Dark Day Club best. I don‘t really picture Lady Helen like the model on books 2 and 3. AND... if we‘re going to get people on the cover, why not Lord Carlston?
My view as I continue through this book. Like many others I‘ve seen, I‘m having trouble focusing (and sleeping) with all that‘s going on. I might try unplugging completely from screens & internet tomorrow.
Trying out a new series today. Mixed reviews from what I‘ve seen, but it looks like the second one gets better. We‘ll see what happens 😬
This has been my kindle “laying in bed with a child waiting for them to fall asleep” book for the past month. It was engaging enough to keep me interested while I was reading, but was easy to put down. I don‘t know if I‘ll read the sequels or not...
I hate this cover btw
The twins keep trying to pull all my books off my shelves🤦♀️. The Dark Days Club is apparently a favorite because they try every.single.time. to pull it off. Sorry guys, you're not quite old enough for that one yet.
My reading companion this morning is looking wistfully out the window at the rain that is keeping him from adventures. Otis is my brother's dog and is staying with me while his people are on vacation. He's a sweetie even if he is high maintenance. 😁
I thought I would love this book, but I was so disappointed 😕 Aristocrats hunting demons in Regency London sounded exactly like my thing, but it was soooooo slooooooow and it was really dragging by the end. Also, I wanted Lady Helen to kick some arse, but all she did was moon around and go to parties. Sigh. Not for me.

Hmmm. I don't think I'm that interested in the sequel to this. It was predictable, and I didn't admire Helen's choices. Nor does the end feel like she has really made a choice; only necessity has forced her to take this way.

This book is between a Pick and a So-So. I plan to continue reading this series which is why it is a Pick!
I felt like this book dragged a bit. It was almost 500 pages! And I know it‘s YA, but I hate when the women are so innocent that they blush at “scandalous” words.
Towards the end the book picked up and got really intense. And I didn‘t want to put it down! I of course love the “bad guy” Lord Carlston.
I put this down for a while because it kind of bogged down for me, but I've started up again now. Not quite sure what I think; somewhat depends how things come together in the last 30%.
This one had a slow start for me, but by the halfway point, I was in to it. While predictable and inducing plenty of eye rolls, the book was enjoyable. This is a book I would probably have never read if not for #lmpbc. I give it a pick, because I can see where it would be loved by the target audience, and the writing is pretty good. @DarcysMom @irre @LazyDays
I expect to get it mailed out on Monday!
Quick update to my #lmpbc group for Round 4. I am still reading the last book. I hope to send it back home within the next week. @DarcysMom @lazydays @irre
#BookMail from my fave #LitsyPenPal! At the end of a stressful week of work, on another night of wintry weather, this New Year package just turned my day around! Thank you, Mikala. 🤗 (And the extra goodies are just the self care I need to partake in this weekend!) ♥️

A bit slow to get into, but a definitely intriguing premise - fighting a supernatural big bad while maneuvering around the restrictions of Regency England! I'd give it a 3.5-4 - definitely enjoyed it enough to take out the next in the series!
3 stars. Not the kind of book I usually read but I‘m glad @DarcysMom pushed me out of my comfort zone with this pick. I‘m traveling during the holiday break so I had to hurry up and finish it so I can get it to @LazyDays on time. Listened to part of it on audio to maximize my reading time. I‘ll be mailing it out tomorrow. #LMPBC #round4 #groupd
It arrived. Thank you @DarcysMom

Recently was lucky enough to listen to Alison Goodman talk about her Lady Helen series, and with the impending release of the third and final book, I have dragged out my ARC (from 2016) to finally read. #eyeroll here she is, surrounded by newly repotted baby cacti 🌵 prickly as the demons she confronts. #currentlyreading #historicalya #butwithdemons #regencyera #excusemytoes
I heard this likened to Buffy meets Jane Austen and luckily that was pretty accurate. It took time (maybe 120 pages) to really get into the action, but once you get there the creatures and secret world that Goodman created are great. I really enjoyed reading this. My only complaint is the DRASTIC cover art change from book one to book two. Why do that?! Looks like I‘m ebooking the next two in the series.🙄 #LitsyAtoZ #MountTBR #Lennox #catsoflitsy
So definitely better than the string of so-so books I've reviewed lately but not quite a pick. I didn't feel compelled to go out and borrow book 2 even though there wasn't really a wrapped up arc (I like series with individual plots in each book within a larger framed arc) and the occult trappings were kind of heavy handed.
Started this one too for my sff by women end of winter marathon
I didn't know I wanted a book that was like Buffy in Regency England but glad I found it! I have no idea how Lady Helen is going to be able to fight the Deceivers and still remain a proper lady though. Little bit over half way through and I'm enjoying this.
I liked this! Not my favourite historical fiction of the week but still! It was a pretty slow start and I didn't really end up loving any of the characters the way I hoped but the pace got better and the magic inner battling & mystery/betrayal was interesting. I hope Helen learns to be stronger and stand on her own legs in the sequel and I got the impression that was going to happen. I also enjoyed the role and the way the romance was written.
I'm really hoping I don't like this book cause the series did a horrific cover downgrade on book two
Another cover change that didn't hit my radar until later. Personally I like the international edition better. #coverlove #changesedition
My very first review for the Skiffy and Fanty Show went up yesterday. I'm taking a look at THE DARK DAYS CLUB by Alison Goodman. It's a Regency fantasy that is firmly grounded in its setting and is a sheer delight to read.

I was so excited to come across this book in the book hut at the zoo today and only 50p 😊
Some of my favorite fonts from books I have read. #forfontssake #anditsaugust
Enjoyed this a lot. Will be picking up the second one asap
Wrote a bit on my blog for the first time in a while! I was inspired by the #goodbookbadcover hashtag for #aprilbookshowers and my recent reading of this book (and my decision whether to buy the next one or read from the library) to think about how much covers make a difference to me in book buying now versus how they used to.
A fun, engaging Regency tale with a twist. Goodman mixes the sly social commentary, witty characters, and period details of Austen into something new. There's mystery, action, banter, emotion, and oh yeah, demon exorcisms (well, sort of). The premise is fairly simple--Regency era meets supernatural secret society, Pride & Prejudice meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer--but it's executed in a way that feels exciting, fresh, and just oh-so-fun.
Reading outside! It may not be green or look particularly springlike outside but the sky is blue, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and I'm content ☀️
(Really liking this book so far too! Fun mix of the Regency era + the supernatural)
Regency tale of demons and love. Totally not what I was expecting but it was fun, engaging, full of wit, danger, and intrigue. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next instalment.
There are a few places where the extensive research that's been done on Regency England is more evident than the plot. However, this is forgivable compared to the pleasure of the book overall (it's just so fun!): our protagonist Lady Helen, discovers that she has a talent for tackling supernatural threats. Think Buffy with a ballgown and reticule, and London is Sunnydale. 🙌🏼
