⭐️⭐️
This was really intriguing. Having recently lived through my own Cat 5 Hurricane (Ian), I was really interested in this. The devastation in Nola, was on another level than what we experience in Fort Myers, but I can relate to the panic, PTSD, terror, etc. a very captivating story

The only Z book I've read. Thankfully, I enjoyed it and can recommend it 😍
Thank you for hosting this great game @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Last day! Thanks @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks , really enjoyed this month 🙂
A very nice non-fiction book based on the experiences of Abdulrahman Zeitoun during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The book starts very tranquil and even paints a beautiful otherworldly picture of flooded New Orleans. But the last three parts are very disturbing (the absence of civil and human rights during that time). I left me truly shocked, distressed and devastated.
This is what a teacher‘s copy looks like. 🙈
While reading I already use a lot of different coloured postits and annotations to mark the things I want to discuss with my students. We did change the reading of the 12th grades from Half Broke Horses to Zwitoun due to my recommendation. I liked the reviews and now I even more convinced.
The book is disturbing and really shows the dark side of the Katrina aftermath. It‘s painful to read and causes one to doubt our ability to deal with adversity as a nation. Just a warning: when you read the book, don‘t google to find out how Zeitoun is today. You‘ll be really disappointed.
This book broke my heart & enraged me. Zeitoun, a Syrian immigrant & business owner, stayed behind in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina after his wife & children evacuated. He cared for neighbors & pets from his canoe while government agencies let the city fail. He was wrongfully arrested & imprisoned and held without bail or the ability to contact his wife. My only complaint is a little repetition, but overall Eggers tells his story well!
Thank you @BarbaraBB for this lovely gift and card! I‘m so excited to read it, and it‘s a beautiful copy. You know how much I adore nonfiction! 💜😘

This book marked off several challenges for me. Zeitoun is a story of a man dealing with a tragic situation and trying to make the best of things. This book is full of hard to read true events that took place after Katrina that never should have occurred. It is also full of hope and community.
This was really good. There were a few parts – mostly Zietoun‘s background in Syria – that I kind of lost focus, but the rest of it was really good. I did see a sort-of “spoiler” when I was only part-way through that I wish I hadn‘t seen, though it wasn‘t specifically about the storyline.
Unfavorable revelations about the character of Mr. Zeitoun have surfaced since the publication of this book. Yet, this non-fiction account of Post Katrina NOLA is eye opening and devastating. Eggers wrote a compelling narrative as presented to him by the Zeitoun family. Perhaps Zeitoun's actions and motivations were white washed, but the horrendous conditions after the disaster are indisputable. #ReadWithMrBook #1WordTitle @MrBook
Pulled off a forgotten corner of my bookshelf, this will be my January choice for #ReadWithMrBook.
I was so excited to read this when I bought it...10 years ago. How does that happen? Why has it taken me so long to get around to it? #TBR #longlostbooks #itsabouttime #1WordTitle @MrBook
Hurricane Katrina was a huge cluster fuck. You think you know the extent of the shit our government tries to pull, and then you find out more and it fucks with a brain spoon feed that “we‘re the best” since birth. It‘s hard to square that away with “we our not our government” but we kinda are...
“This country country was not unique. This country was fallible.”
Something that I‘m unfortunately still struggling to come to grips with.
I absolutely loved this book. The true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun who stayed in his #NewOrleans home during and after Hurricane Katrina, helping neighbors until he was arrested without cause. Heartbreaking and important. #LetsTravelJuly

As expected, my reading has decreased significantly while I‘m excavating. Only 15 books this month—I suspect there will be even fewer next month. These were my three favorites, the tagged book beating out The Worst Hard Time by the slimmest of margins.
Remarkable & does not disappoint. The story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun & his family in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina, the storm itself & then its aftermath is inspiring, deeply human, frustrating, horrifying &, ultimately, infuriating. As you read this book it‘s almost impossible to believe such things could happen in the US & yet they did. This book puts a very human face on what happens when disaster strikes. A definite recommend.
Picked this one to read next because it‘s been hanging out in my TBR pile for a while. Of course the first blurb I see is by Timothy Egan, the author of The Worst Hard Time. The only other Eggers book I‘ve read is The Circle—I didn‘t love it but there were parts of it—and certainly the IDEA behind it—I enjoyed. I have higher hopes for this one.
I was too young during Katrina to know about what really went on but I remember it happening and everyone around me talking about it. This book was amazing to remind me of the tragedy and open my eyes now that I am old enough to really appreciate it. My love of Eggers just grows with every book of his I read
This is Chloe and she and I recommend Zeitoun. This is a page turner and I can‘t stop reading it. This is a good look at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and how it affected this family. Wow.
@Carleneishere Your #restingbookface pick arrived to me today. (Thank you @Julsmarshall ) No need to keep cover a secret anymore since it will have traveled full circle once I read it and send to you!
Heroic and heartbreaking true story of a family impacted by Katrina. Read while visiting New Orleans. #travelread

I was really into the book and had so much sympathy for the characters. Then I found out that Abdulrahman Zeitoun has since been arrested for trying to hire someone to murder his wife. So, that's kind of put a damper on my original opinion.
'It had been a dizzying series of events- arrested at gunpoint in a home he owned, brought to an impromptu military base built inside a bus station, accused of terrorism and locked in an outdoor cage.'
Zeitoun is a hero during Kathrina, but he ends up in inhuman circumstances based on prejudices. Such a good work of non-fiction by Dave Eggers.

I was a student in New Orleans when #hurricane Katrina hit and during the next 2 years there I witnessed some fascinating changes within the city. This book is a true story about a man who chose to stay in the city to ride out the storm and the unbelievable events that followed.

I WAS NOT READY FOR THIS BOOK 😭
I couldn't sit still whilst reading it. Heartbreaking isn't even the word. Traumatising. It just left me so angry and utterly broken. I can't believe this happened. Please read it.
Almost finished with my #LitsyReadingChallenge bingo card. This week I added the #written10yearsago square. Just two more to go!
"Think about it," Zeitoun laughed. "We're a Muslim couple running a painting company in Louisiana. Not such a good idea to turn away clients." Anyone who had a problem with rainbows, he said, would surely have trouble with Islam. So the rainbow remained.
This book is a must-read. Eggers has an amazing talent for portraying someone's else's story with empathy and insight. Zeitoun, a Syrian immigrant and small business owner, stays in New Orleans during and after Katrina when his family evacuated. Covers the devastation of Katrina, how easily the freedoms we believe are guaranteed can break down, and islamophobia. #nonfiction #litsatoz #letterE #readeverywhere #lrc4
Stuck in Pittsburgh due to delta cancelling thousands of flights. Trying to make the best of the rebooking line. #springbreak #delays
#firstlinecurrentread #aprilbookshowers "On moonless nights the men and boys of Jableh, a dusty fishing town on the coast of Syria, would gather their lanterns and set out in their quietest boats." Started this in the middle of the night last night - loved the opening line.
Zeitoun is a book about the New Orleans hurricane, Katrina. Based on true experiences, A. Zeitoun, was introduced through his native, Syria. I learned a great deal about Syria and the Muslim religion. As Katrina approached, it was heartbreaking to learn the limited availability of assistance to the region. The narrator, Firdous Bamji, expertly portrayed the emotional ups and downs of the Zeitoun family.
Wow. Fascinating story. So much hope and ugliness happening all at once. Loved it. @Carleneishere
Reading this beauty about a family during Katrina while a massive storm is raging outside my window in SoCal. Good fit.
Book haul from earlier today with @Kat_Reads thanks a million for the early birthday present. I really needed it, I was almost out of books to read 🤣🤣🤣
There are a couple in here that will help me on my #192019 Tropic of Cancer, Babbitt and Sons and Lovers to name a few.
#seasonsreadings2016 #titlesthatstartwithxyz I've yet to read my x & y selections...I'm saving them for my 2017 reading challenges but I did read Zeitoun & The Zookeepers Wife. If you need a "Z" title, I highly recommend Zeitoun?
Compiled a TBR pile to help pull myself out of this post-election funk. Books the focus on environmental, Christian, LGBT, immigrant, Muslim, feminist, and foreign policy issues. #imstillwithher #diversitymatters #overit
